cod is quake arena on steroids, battlefield has been developing features and a path of their own, many copied by most. (from reviving, knifing in first person, classes, class customization, online stats, ranks, unlocks, ingame voip, vehicles mixed with infantry, urban and wide maps (more 2142, not so much in bf2), unlocks, warning teammates of enemie position, uav`s, player controled artillery, an ingame player hierarchy with mutiny vote, etc...

bad company maybe slower, I don`t know. but previous battlefield titles are among the most intensive games. squad vs squad! when you know that if you don`t stop them they are going to take your flag, revives and kills everywhere, total chaos, trying to force the other team back. driving a car while chased by guided missiles from a stubborn chopper. you and 3 guys looking at 4 enemies... and a tank, arriving to take your flag. all unscripted, unpredictable, there was no game like battlefield.
