another tip to get your splits is always keeping your leg muscles warm. the colder they get, the tighter they will be. never attempt splits right away, its not good for you and wont help, always stretch first. hope it helps :)
Hi, how do you manage to get the back leg straight? I thought I had a breakthrough with my front leg getting a lot lower, but the back leg is still bent...my back thigh is almost perpendicular to the calve and floor. I just can't get it to straighten, the knee seems locked in place. Is this a natural part of the process that you went through, and I just have to keep trying and it'll straighten itself? Or is there something wrong with the technique I'm using to try to get into the postion?
@parnz2 i did competitive artistic gymnastics for about 5 years and i never came down :( you can't fight against your genes...i had this sad realization already when i was a young child.
so when i was sad that i don't can do the split i said to myself : you cant't do the split, but you have above-average pretty hair ;)
another thing to do that helps, is that when you are done with a strech( a toe touch or etc.) if you wiggle or shake you leg a little it will help loosen it up more
I think that helps so much. I have been stretching before I saw this, but these stretches are more affective. Thank you. I am so close with the right splits, and not that far from the left and middle splits. Not too sure about the over-splits, but I thought you were amazing. Congrats.

for the 4:25 part your supposed to put your back leg straight back and keep the bent one bent how she has it but just the back one back! STAIGHT! thats how our dance teacher taught us! youll feel it!

I used to have my side splits, but I've never been able to get my middle split closer to the ground than three inches. I'm trying to get back all the flexibility I had when I was in gymnastics years ago.
Laura, i did these last year and i got my splits within 3 weeks. :D. I took a ltitle skating break and lost my splits but ive started up stretching again and i got them back! :D
its the not quanity of the stretch, its the quality (well part is quanity :P) but hold the stretch for atleast a minute. no less then 30 seconds or it will not do anything. warm up for atleast 5 minutes before hand - the stretches will feel better and be more effective. stretch every day for half an hour and you will have it in a couple of months ;)
I held my stretches for 15 seconds each, never warmed up and got my splits in about 5 weeks :) and this is coming from the girl who couldn't touch her toes before.
Well there's the muscle's potential, the muscle (or tendon, or ligament)'s base flexibility and the muscle's growth speed. So she probably had the potential and the growth speed.

just wondering how long does it usually take to get a split for someones who's barely beggining? and do you have to stretch everyday to gain that flexibility?
Depending on how often you stretch, at least 3-5 times a week, the improvements you see in your flexibility will vary. But you should be stretching before and after every workout, to prevent injury. While you do not need to necessarily stretch everyday, flexibility is like muscle tone, if you don't use it regularly, in this case stretching, you'll lose it.
If you're very busy with sports and such, I would suggest starting a simple stretching program like this one and do it everyday before you go to bed or when you wake up, but make sure to warm up your muscles first by doing jumping jacks or something to get the blood flowing. Also, stretching is a very important part in injury prevention so you could and should stretch before and after practices and games.
i had the same prob drink some orange jucie it helps and if it starts to crap up again rub it where it hurts and DRINK A LOT OF ORANGE JUCIE till the prob it doesent hurt that bad anymore and after u do that it will not be so much turst me good luck
Drink water and eat bananas! I kept on getting foot cramps, and yes, my thighs too, but bananas give u protein. and apparently, its the type of protein that helps u.. not cramp! :)
I finally got my right side split down, thanks very much as these videos definitely helped! For my left side I am still about 2 inches from the ground but it seems to get easier..so i should have it by fall. I'm still not close to the center splits though...but getting the right split is definitely encouraging and shows it CAN happen. :D I'm a skater too, I am in FS 3 and will be testing adult pre-bronze moves and freestyle this fall.
How long did it take you to get your splits using your exercises? How flexible were you before hand? Great stretches! I'm going to try the one I haven't been doing and see if that helps any!
another way is to elevate your front leg while you stretch them but i would] be careful not to overdo this stretch but it will help and you should do do this AFTER all of your other streches =]
I noticed you were doing basic butterflies, but you are flexible enough that you should be doing advanced. (instead of putting your heals together, just put the balls of your feet together and push your heals apart.)
i think she did it like that cos its for people who arnt flexible and thank you sooooo much ive been doing basic butterfly n couldnt feel a thing even when i had my feet as close as possible with my knees on the ground and my little sister sitting on my back finally i can feel it

im in drill team we had to strech every day and stuff it took about 2 months for every one to be able to do the splits at first it hurts but you'll get use to it

Hi. I'm also really tall also and if you just stretch A LOT you'll get it.
In my opinion I think it's harder for tall people to do splits unless you're born flexible but you can do it! :D

its the not quanity of the stretch, its the quality (well part is quanity :P) but hold the stretch for atleast a minute. no less then 30 seconds or it will not do anything. warm up for atleast 5 minutes before hand - the stretches will feel better and be more effective. stretch every day for half an hour and you will have it in a couple of months ;)

I held my stretches for 15 seconds each, never warmed up and got my splits in about 5 weeks :) and this is coming from the girl who couldn't touch her toes before.

Well there's the muscle's potential, the muscle (or tendon, or ligament)'s base flexibility and the muscle's growth speed. So she probably had the potential and the growth speed.

Depending on how often you stretch, at least 3-5 times a week, the improvements you see in your flexibility will vary. But you should be stretching before and after every workout, to prevent injury. While you do not need to necessarily stretch everyday, flexibility is like muscle tone, if you don't use it regularly, in this case stretching, you'll lose it.

If you're very busy with sports and such, I would suggest starting a simple stretching program like this one and do it everyday before you go to bed or when you wake up, but make sure to warm up your muscles first by doing jumping jacks or something to get the blood flowing. Also, stretching is a very important part in injury prevention so you could and should stretch before and after practices and games.

bananas contain potassium, which helps stop cramping. I eat one banana before i do a big strech workout, and it helps soo much.

i had the same prob drink some orange jucie it helps and if it starts to crap up again rub it where it hurts and DRINK A LOT OF ORANGE JUCIE till the prob it doesent hurt that bad anymore and after u do that it will not be so much turst me good luck

Drink water and eat bananas! I kept on getting foot cramps, and yes, my thighs too, but bananas give u protein. and apparently, its the type of protein that helps u.. not cramp! :)

I finally got my right side split down, thanks very much as these videos definitely helped! For my left side I am still about 2 inches from the ground but it seems to get easier..so i should have it by fall. I'm still not close to the center splits though...but getting the right split is definitely encouraging and shows it CAN happen. :D I'm a skater too, I am in FS 3 and will be testing adult pre-bronze moves and freestyle this fall.

at the beginning, you have bent knees, is this what its supposed to be like?
because i have been cheering for about 4-5years and i was told straight knees are deffo best when just stretching overall..
so if ur doing them JUST for splits is it best to bend? x

It depends on what you're trying to stretch but if you're trying to stretch your splits... Bent knees will stretch your legs less.

How long did it take you to get your splits using your exercises? How flexible were you before hand? Great stretches! I'm going to try the one I haven't been doing and see if that helps any!

another way is to elevate your front leg while you stretch them but i would] be careful not to overdo this stretch but it will help and you should do do this AFTER all of your other streches =]

I noticed you were doing basic butterflies, but you are flexible enough that you should be doing advanced. (instead of putting your heals together, just put the balls of your feet together and push your heals apart.)

i think she did it like that cos its for people who arnt flexible and thank you sooooo much ive been doing basic butterfly n couldnt feel a thing even when i had my feet as close as possible with my knees on the ground and my little sister sitting on my back finally i can feel it

ouch that seems like a painful process.... what if i'm sore the next day will that injure my muscles? should i skip a day and then do it the next day..like do it one day..then not the next..then do it again..then not the next..?

im in drill team we had to strech every day and stuff it took about 2 months for every one to be able to do the splits at first it hurts but you'll get use to it
