It was a sin to see the way SEPTA painted the trolleys back then. They looked like clowns. Anyhow, the problem with the 23 trolley is morons parking on the tracks and blocking the trolley. In 1985, I was repairing a payphone on Germantown ave when the trolleys began backing up and ringing their bells. About 10 minutes later, a supervisor showed up in a blg ol Chevy Blazer with a push bumper. He pushed the offending car into the curb so hard, it blew the car's right front tire. It was beautiful!
SEPTA has never, and will never, give into the demands of neither the public nor honest lawmakers. You will never see the 23 nor 56 as trolley lines again, nor will you see the 29 and 79 as trackless trolley lines again.

The only reason why they brought the 15 trolley line back was because of Federal funding.

I was still living in Philly at that time, and riding the 23 regularly. I'd forgotten that at least one car was repainted for the Bicentennial. Thanks for posting this.
@gusneaker Septa disbanded the majority of the surface trolley lines in the the late 1990s...the 15 is the last surviving surface only service. However there are still 5 subway surface routes running in west philly and southwest philly
@krizvasa The tram network only consists of the five subway-surface routes 10,11,13,34,36 and the all surface route 15 which was reactivated with rebuilt PCC's a few years ago.
The first clips must have been old. I remember buses that were red and green in the '50's and early '60's, before SEPTA was formed. Thank goodness there are still at least two trolley lines in the City of Philadelphia.
It's neat to see one of those ex-KC cars in the bicentennial paint. we had 15 of them sitting up the street from my house at the MMID in Union Bridge, until they finally had therm hauled off on flatbeds.
Yes it is. Right now the Rt.23 bus is on detour because they are putting back the trolley tracks in Chestnut Hill. Maybe the trolleys might come back?
Good ol red white and blue!!! Its great how people shot this footage and how we are looking at it many years later enjoying it!

How did SEPTA manage to keep it's trolley system when other cities scrapped theirs?
adelgado75 8 months ago
I believe PCC cars still run in the city but not on this route, which is now a bus route (see comments below).

Thanks for the info! Do all (or any) of these lines still use PCCs?

It looks like this is in South Philly around 10th and Bigler. I saw the stadium in the background at one point. Nice video.

I remember riding those ex-Kansas City cars as a teenager. Rode an air car on the 23 and a KC car on the 50.
