the batteries are far better then you think, even the cheaper lithiums will last 10 years and still have roughly 80% of their capacity. I'm looking into building my own electric car my battery will cost $10,000, and get me 100km.

it sounds like a lot but that's only $20 a week for 10 years and the battery has paid for it's self. i pay roughly $40 a week in petrol.

The Govrement are alawys banging on about car imissions, climate change, the Ozone, how we must adapt to change the enviroment for the better while inner cities are being charged for congestion and fuel prices are at an all time high. What little fuel there is we have to rape other lands for thier fuel. The rape to the Goverment is called war. So to have something of this nature to come along at the right time should be a prayer from above. Shame these cars wont make it out off the drawing table

It all seems brilliant until you think about the chargingof the batteries is a real D...R...A...G..Wires trailing outside, long leads, trip hazzards, worrying if battery will last for the journey home.

Barttery technology has come a long way with the new Lithium Polymer but they do not last forever and I for one do not want to be buying replacements at £5,000 a pop. Even if it is every few years. Smart diesels are the way to go ! high mpg no worries with batteries. Or fuel cells ? Much smarter

Actually they probably would. The reason electric cars have a reputation for performing poorly in cold weather is that up until about five years ago, they all used lead acid batteries, which pretty much die in the cold. You know that, the battery your car uses for ignition is lead acid.

However these new cars use lithium ion, lithium iron phosphate, and lithium manganese batteries. All lithium derivatives perform far better in the cold than lead acid, especially lithium polymer.

the problem is there isn't enough lithium in world for every one in the western world to own an electric car, secondly electric cars are not ZERO emmission, they are powered form the main which are poowered by coal gas oil, or nuclear

Not all EV batteries must be lithium ion (there are other, better battery technologies on the way like nickel sodium and zinc air) and 100% of the charge points provided by Better Place (google them) will be supplied by solar and wind.

You have a failure in logic. The car is not creating any emissions so it IS zero emissions. The source of the energy may cause emission, but it is entirely possible to charge them from a zero emission source.

In addition Nuclear power plants do not cause emissions. They have a highly controllable waste product, but are otherwise emissionless.

Running an electric car from a nuclear power plan will result in zero greenhouse gasses.
