@door34 the ancient macedonian language was in the now extinct paleo-balkans family and was related to ancient greek. when macedonia was hellenized that language went extinct. the modern macedonian language is slavic and completely unrelated to the ancient one. before yugoslavia came into existence the slavic dialects spoken in macedonia were considered to be dialects of bulgarian, but after WW2 the government codified it. but macedonian is still mutually intelligible with bulgarian.

i was talking to someone (of macedonian descent) and told her macedonian is a slavic language and she refused to believe me. it's annoying when i know i'm right and somebody else insists i'm wrong. her argument was I'M MACEDONIAN I KNOW BETTER THAN YOU. but actually i know linguistics and know how to classify languages. macedonian is in the slavic family whether she likes it or not. she even admitted many words sound similar to russian but still wouldn't accept the language is slavic.

If you Compare the North-Greek Dialect with your "Macedonian" you will understand: Your Language is NOT Greek.
The language you speak has nothing in common with greek, it isn NOT a dialect, it is a Slavic Derivative.
So: Ethnic Roots can only be defined within a common territory INCLUDING a common language.
Otherwise one could say easily that the INDIANS are also Macedonians, just because once they belong to the Empire of Alexander the Great.

@door34 It's a common mistake, but I have to correct you. Alexander never conquered India. His men went into India, but refused to march any further. They grow tired of fighting at that point. But your point is absolutely correct. You can say the Egyptian are also Macedonian, just because once they belong to the empire of Alexander the Great. Even his capital (and pride & joy) was in Egypt, called "Alexandria" :)

@door34 the ancient macedonian language was in the now extinct paleo-balkans family and was related to ancient greek. when macedonia was hellenized that language went extinct. the modern macedonian language is slavic and completely unrelated to the ancient one. before yugoslavia came into existence the slavic dialects spoken in macedonia were considered to be dialects of bulgarian, but after WW2 the government codified it. but macedonian is still mutually intelligible with bulgarian.

@MrHooligan7 macedonia is part of a dialect continuum of southern slavic. it could also be argued that the entire south slavic family is one language with different dialects in each country based on the amount of mutual intelligibility. the eastern part of this dialect continuum contains bulgarian and macedonian (variants of the same language), and the western part contains croatian and serbian (also variants of the same language) as well as slovenian.

The Macedonians worshiped the 12 Olympian gods as the rest of the Greeks. The name Macednos is homeric word and means tall. All the kings of Macedonia had Greek names. Alexander's name is Greek. The word "Alexandros" is produced from the prefix alex(=protector) and the word andros(=man) meaning "he who protects from men". The prefix "alex" can be found in many Greek words today (alexiptoto=parachute, alexisfairo=bulletproof - all these words have the meaning of protection).

All the inscriptions on monuments,coins and other artifacts in Macedonia and also in Pakistan,India and Iran have the Greek language on them.There are no ancient monuments with a different language.An example is the inscribed base of a statue of Thessaloniki,of the 2nd c. B.C.Thessaloniki was Alexander's sister and the second in power city of Byzantium.The funny thing is that Slavs from Scopje call our city with the barbaric name Solun...
