Um, actually people ARE denied treatment at the E.R. depending on their already existing level of medical debt, and the severity of the health condition affecting them.

For example, if you have a broken leg that isn't life threatening, and you've already incurred say, $80k in health care debt from Parkinsons treatment or something, it is very likely an American hospital will refuse you care.

In a nutshell the federal patient-dumping law entitles you to three things: screening, emergency care and appropriate transfers. A hospital must provide "stabilizing care" for a patient w/a emergency medical condition. The hospital must screen for the emergency and provide the care without inquiring about your ability to pay

III. A FEDERAL LAW PASSED IN 1986 . . .

Of course, having cut-and-pasted that quote, you have no idea what the law actually is. But then again, the idea that you would actually think for yourself is, Im sure, inconceivable if not outright impossible for you.

The law youre probably referring to is 42 U.S.C. s. 1395, et seq., the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA). Here are the facts:
