@napischu When making carrier landings, pilots go to full throttle at touchdown in case they miss the catch wires. This way they'll have enough speed to take off again instead of going in the drink.
@1LibMrDucks Neither. That's the Lockheed S-3 Viking. They've been retired from carrier duty but still fly land-based in Hawaii. The airframe hours of most planes reached their 'sundown', but further Lockheed tests extended airframe life by 11,000 hours.
At least he has a nice big arrow pointing to the ship.
"full thrust or reverse?"
They always use full thrust don't they? Since he's pretty much at the end of the runway when the wire stops him, so he's going to need instant thrust to get back up if it's missed.
@bed792 controlledburst is right this is a S-3 Viking a EA-6 would have a noticeable refueling probe visible as its mounted on the nose of the plane and sticks straight up :)
@orika001 Aircraft carries typically move when they have planes landing. The carrier turns into the wind so that the pilots can have even more headwind they can create lift for the plane and allow for an easier approach and a smoother landing. Same with every approach for a passenger jet..the tower picks the runway that goes into the wind for those planes as well. If they do not have a runway that is going directly into the wind, that is when the crosswind approach comes into play.
The fact that it moves is what makes it even more credible to land safely. The carrier moves into the wind (headwind) so the rear runway is used for the plane to aproach in headwind + the carriers speed (knots) surplus the headwind. It can drop 30-50knots airspeed for the jets aproach speed.
@Photobyke i think thats actually the airplane engines, im not 100% sure..either that or its a leaf blower. Il get back to you when my navy cousin analysis the vid for me when his back home.
@MrOzwinner The airccraft is the S-3 Viking. It's nickname is "hoover", in reference to the sound its engines makes, which sound like a vacuum cleaner!
@jonny96 Pretty calm sea, no turbulence to speak of, stabilized approach. I'd guess not that hard in those conditions but change one of them ...............
Too bad there isn't a full motion carrier sim somewhere civvie pilots could have a go in. I'd buy an hour or two!
@schlusselmensch Too right, i'd join you on the SIM. conditions don't get much better than that. Still though, landing on some thats moving and as long as a football field is bit harder than an ILS into heathrow
why the hell did i listen to my mother... typical christian obeying & honoring parents... i could have been doing that for a living! where am i at now? an un-employed JANITOR
@FutureMarine246 I've never served and I knew what it was. That has to be one of the toughest jobs on Planet Earth, especially at night with the deck pitching and rolling.
@336kgf yea i cant wait to join the marine corps to fly, another thing that tipped me off is that if im correct the viking is the only carrier borne aircraft that has jet engines and a side by side cockpit
@FutureMarine246 I think you are correct on that one, unless they still use the Prowler. No idea if they retired them all or not. I give you thumbs up because I never served.
@FutureMarine246 A friend of mine from high school went to college right after hs graduation in 1987 and I think he was in the ROTC. He's now a USMC Lt. Col who has a pretty intense job in D.C. Been to Iraq and all of that other fun stuff. Gave a speech at our Memorial Day festivities. Made me damn proud to have known him and graduated with him. I wouldn't be surprised if he had a star on his shoulder someday. He is that lucky and that smart.
@FutureMarine246 Just out of curiousity, what college will you be attending? I think it would be a great idea if you were Marine Reserves while you went to school.
@336kgf University of Lousiana at Lafayette, Mechanical Engineering. I was gonna do the NROTC thing but i decided to go to college on my own accord so im free to do what i want before i join
@FutureMarine246 Engineering is a good degree to have, especially when you are going through the calculations in flight school. Good choice. Best of luck.
@Oneslowstang Are you a dumbass you have to catch a three inch thick wire with a hook and you also have to match speed and hope you dont go off the aircraft carrier.
Actually no I'm not a dumb ass, Like I said it looks pretty easy from this POV. It looks crazy from the crew on the ships POV. If you miss the hook, it's not a big deal, your at full throttle and can power up for another try.
That is an S-3 Viking aircraft. Formerly it was used for anti-sub patrol, now it's used for anti-sub and in-flight refueling. They call it the "Hoover" for distinct sound the engines make. Some pilots joke that it is the finest airline plot training aircraft the Navy has.
