I'm not interested in politics and have no understanding of big words such as democracy because its irrelevant to me. I'm just an average guy that needs a stable livelihood. If the oppositions can form a strong coalition focusing solely on daily bread and butter issues, you will probably gain more support.
It is often said that singaporeans are conformists and are also too "afraid of the government" to voice our opinion. But come to think again, how are the singapore species of human different from that of the rest of the world? The answer is of cos.. no difference. Majority of us do not go on protests over issues such as human rights not because of fear, but rather, apathy, since we are all living in satisfactory comfort of the current governance. (keyword being satisfactory)
Dear CSJ, I won't say I've been the SDP's biggest fan, but I certainly respect you guys for having the courage of your convictions. The latest news about your political flirtation with the likes of Abdul Malik, however (an individual of rather dubious character, at least to me), isn't doing any favours for your party's already shaky image. If you're serious about presenting a viable alternative to PAP governance, then do so; otherwise what's the point ? Just thought you should know ..
I don't think Pres Oama will bother about Chee because Obama has already been to Singapore for the APEC meeting. Singapore showcased the Marina Sands, Marina Bay, CBD, Suntec City, the city streets, cleanliness, shopping malls, our disciplined and well-educated people and the efficiency of even the cleaners and service people who keep Singapore spick and span.
He wants total liberty, be be reminded, freedom without control is as good as no freedom. We don't have Ghettos like the U.S. have, we are not politically messy like how Taiwan is, and yet SIngaporeans complain? Don't use sad videos of Singapore for your sad excuse to get ratings from the people, other country had it much worse, at least our government forced use to fight for our right to live well, other country give welfare that pushed many into abyss of laziness, look at australia for example
i believe dr chee is smart enough to seek life elsewhere outside singapore if he wanted to, but instead stayed back to voice out for singaporeans. i'm appreciative for that but its not gonna work because US/china/europe won't give a shit about a mediocre country's politics. They merely use sg for cheap purposes, once there is somewhere for better trade they'll leave. Non-existent of sg dosen't affect them as much as their economy affects sg.
Frankly speaking, no party can guarantee anyone a job, because it's the employer who will rate the candidate's capabilities, qualifications and work record.
So, if one assumes that voting for the opposition will amount to getting a job, , think again.... be clea r about this, that the DECISION TO EMPLOY is the employer's and not the opposition party.
If one is plain lazy and have low qualifications, the opposition party can't help too
Overcoming indoctrination is difficult because of the censorship imposed. Even the internet is censored I have found. Maybe extreme and continued international media exposure to human rights abuses, increase in brutal beatings canings, and mandatory death penalty might help
Singapore has been extremely successful under LKY. That guy always knew what to do. He has built it all - why would he want to give it away? You can look at the so called democracies in Europe, what can you see? Prosperity, development and fast growth? No. Dirt, protests, burning streets, unemployment, corruption, drug abuse. That's what democracy brings. No direction, anarchy and there are always players in the foggy background to take big money while nobody watch them.
The fact that the PAP hasn't already crashed his plane and cited "result of wind turbulence" speaks of the disregard they have for him as a credible threat. To the PAP, he's a joke, nothing more. If he's such a substantial threat, they would have assassinated his ass ages ago and covered it up more professionally than all those deaths in NS attributed to Tekong spirits.
dr chee, i am really relieved that someone is addressing the human rights issue and the freedom of speech issue in my beloved homeland. However, isnt it better if the SDP work with the PAP instead of going against? Justifiable? Whatever it is, i love the idea of going to president obama for help:)
you all need to think deeply this guy is a Doctorate, do you think that he do this thing just for fun and want to waste time??
you want to bet with me?? if the price for everything is getting higher n higher its going to be 1964 again BUT its not race but its going to be The People against Goverment!
Hmm curious if Obama will listen to this video. I doubt it, even if he does he aint going to interfere with Singapore domestic affair. Singapore is just a small country
You were imprisoned many times? Were you or your followers caned or not? You were barred from traveling overseas? Barred, as in banned from traveling overseas. You can't go to Japan, Australia, South Africa, Brazil, and the United States? I can't believe how Singapore can act like a Military, Police, or Nanny State. It's just like the novel "1984".
Another eloquent opponent of the draft was former President Ronald Reagan who in a 1979 column on conscription said:
"...it rests on the assumption that your kids belong to the state. If we buy that assumption then it is for the state not for parents, the community, the religious institutions or teachers to decide who shall have what values and who shall do what work, when, where and how in our society. That assumption isn't a new one. The Nazis thought it was a great idea."
Its sad that greater interest isn't shown from the international community about the plight of Singapore. It has become largely a dictatorship. Sure its economically prosperous but Singaporeans have had to give up their freedom for this.
Well, be glad that until now, the efficiency and the effectiveness governed by the ruling party of our country is evident to people all over the world. Be GRATEFUL that GOD had BLESSED our nations with a CAPABLE and Highly-Effective government. I urged ALL of you to move on in life. Rather than spending time complaining, grudging against one another. Why not we spent our time more useful in building our nation with our governing body's?
"I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue." - Barry Goldwater
well guys, do you want to be free but poor? you think america's so good with freedom of speech and assembly? you wanna live in the slums? yes we have no rights, we have no say and we long to be free one day. support SDP or any other oppositions that you want. but do you think they can provide the peace and prosperity PAP can give? no matter how u criticise PAP, unless u give a better model, ppl wont vote for you. nonetheless i agree spore is ruled by totalitarian democracy but guys, live with it
Chee wants to be the Dalai Lama of Singapore so that he can receive money from uncle SAM? He should go to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine and preach about peace first. Earn a Nobel peace prize for Singapore. Then maybe Obama will pay attention to him. Sorry, Chee - Obama ignored you. HUMAN RIGHTS ARE IMPORTANT. But HUMAN RIGHTS FOR CHEE ARE NOT IMPORTANT ENOUGH.
the way he speak. too damn cunning, If he were to be the one governing singapore. Yes less taxes, No ERP, Alot more. Can this guy help singapore? what can he do? Is is vision as good as PAP's? So you all meant that if he was the leader of singapore he wont have the media, millitary and civils on his side? Please give me a good answer to this with a EXCELLENT REASON.
A small country has limited resource and hence need a strong leader to allocate them. The country cannot afford to be so free that resources are misaligned with the country's vision. A patriot should help the leader make wise decision and not create problems. Even if I believe someone is genuinely patriotic, I wld think his approach is incorrect. There is no dictatorship here, just no full democracy. A full democracy here could be suicide. Too small a population to average out unwanted thinking.
Singapore is a small country that requires to stay ahead at all times in order to remain relevant or simply to survive. As with all revolution, we will have to undergo a downturn before we can benefit from it. But can we afford that downturn? The price of being freeer is too high. I rather have what I have now than risk losing everything. I will only support winners of elections because our country needs winners. Sorry non-winners, I love my PAP. Hahas.
Why u all PAP supprters are blind?HOTA,NS,allowing prostitution in geylang even it is morally wrong,Rise of Government salary,Controlling of state media. Why sweden able to be most incorruptible leader even though they did not raise government salary.THINK ABOUT THIS
I would rather trade my civil rights and freedom of speech for peace and security. Racial discrimination is pretty bad back in the states and black / white supremacists run wild.
Prez Obama is coming to Singapore for APEC meeting!! wow! I bet, we simply can't wait to show him Singapore, our beautiful country, the way we live in harmony among our various races... and the people's pride in our homeland.
there's peace and harmony , stability , great healthcare system..won't be surprised that he'll be impressed, after all he was amazed about our education system tht even some US schools are using our MATHS Books fo teaching.
CSJ's selfish. he would do anything to bring down LKY including putting singaporeans to shame on the net. i dont agree 100% with all that the govt does, but when he shamed the govt, he 'intentionally or not' made us look like idiots because we are 'knitted' with the govt. when he made us look so stupid(and him so smart) didnt he also violate our human rights? defame a foreign uni cos they gave LKY award, EXCUSE ME GOT S'POREANS FROM THAT SCH K. that uni no standard means we also no standard la?!
Change cannot occur without the people wanting it, without the will to do so, nothing will happen.
The problem then is how to overcome the indoctrination of the people while trying to stay out of trouble in the minefield that is singaporean politics tied to the judicial system.
oh, u mean..about having opposition party?.well, it guess that's no easy pie given that it takes years to build trust. and that's not the only factor. So far, I'm for the present govt, p'raps you're for WP..nothing wrong.
none is free like you, with nothing to do ..moping round the comp during your retirement days. Go play golf.
He seems to imply it. However, US Foreign Policy rightfully forbids interventionist methods in toppling a so called 'Benign, yet stable democracy', so that true democracy can be resurrected.
As long as the Singaporean government accords in an 'appropriate' manner - Nothing will happen.
However, when the 'chairman' meets his maker and his power and influence is forever dissipated - imminent change will come.
Is he trying to ask US to interfere in our country's affairs beacuse he is not able to garner the support of the people? The examples cited are even out of context... Perhaps SG might one day become the 51st state of the USA.
He is unable to garner mass support because of the complete control of the media, the jailing and bankrupting of political activists and the elections department being under the Prime Minister.
In an actual, functioning democracy he could have achieved so much more. Haiz.. maybe he should just leave this place before they completely destroy him like JBJ..
These are ppl who enjoy slandering anything about LKY, it's their inferiority complex..those who've not made it good in their personal lives n blame the govt for everything but themselves. Check the previous pages, they thumbdown comments here n other vids, hiding others' comments should they say anything good abt the govt. or Singapore's achievements.
Likely, the XXX party ..for being unable to achieve what the govt can do so they're against LKY. Too bad if they can't face the facts
TOO BAD that there a Papie dogs like you out there who are not only contented with controlling and manipulation of the press in Sg but also trying to mark your influence in cyberspace.
Well, I am here to mark this post and to level the playing field a bit. TOO BAD!!!
Ok, ok, don't bug me. I now pronounce you A PAPPIE TROLL's POO!
Btw, you remind one of a "wendyneo" who likes calling others "PAPPIE dog". Do learn some social ettiquette , and respect others in order for others to respect you.
I AM a proud Singaporean too but I will stand up against all wrong doings even if it comes from PAP. Understand?
Would you do the same? Or are you paid to do the opposite?
Freedom of speach on the net works both ways, dude. You can write whatever you like, BUT then I have the right to post after you designating the previous poster as a "PaPpie dog". Remember I am watching you.
Thanks to Kin 94285 who informed us 'Sngaporeans about the enikisser tnumbnail gang , notorious for misleading others in Malaysian sites too. She's not only anti-govt but anti-Singapore?? makin fun of our Newater on Mahathir Bombing vid. . At least some of u have grouses to vote for other parties, but she seems to have deep hatred for our country, Singapore. We should stand up against such ppl who work against our country but call thenselves 'Singaporeans'?
i rather have some chee cheong fun then just letting you asking for help from a president that dont even a bit of singapore... Do better in elections and prove
''..and if everything goes to hell. go back to PAP then"?
would there be time to salvage and pick up th pieces? from FIRST WORLD TO third world? have u thought of the consequences? look up other countries n their democracies on the streets..fighting, bloodshed, army vs ppl, ppl vs ppl, bombshelling, homes n business bldgs smashed, n jobs, hospitals in despair, is that what we want for Singapore?
misleading downthumbnailings on others' comments are clearly signs of defeat...,,it means infringement of other commentators' rights too! so, if this is chee's vid, i suggest that he enables all comments for fairness of human rights that he champions...to prove tht he's not all talk.
It's really sad to see how SDP is trying so hard to bring democracy. And they get treated like crap. Good job. It is a fact that PAP has the most experience, oh wait. All the experience in governing. It has already cemented it's position for generations to come.
So what's the point of holding elections, if nothing changes. The other parties can't rally without being sued. So they have no chance at all. Hell, just vote for WP at least. And if everything goes to hell. Go back to PAP then.
@seapss for dr chee, i am really relieved that someone is addressing the human rights issue and the freedom of speech issue in my beloved homeland. However, isnt it better if the SDP work with the PAP instead of going against? Justifiable? Whatever it is, i love the idea of going to president obama for help:)
freedom of speech? wat he's talking abt? just talk. all positive comments will soon be hidden with the usual numerous misleading thumnails..wihile the negatives remain..that';s their tactic woven in all such anti-SG videos..
Prez Obama is too smart to be fooled, he knows SG well enough, he even highlighted SG's sound education system in one of his speeches . He didn't have to describe where SG is. cuz he knows Americans are aware of SG's firm standing in the global world..
if the SDP party is focused on Freedom of Speech, so why hide others' comments. Cruisser217 was commenting on Singapore's world rankings as I see them.
For anyone to hide Singapore's achievements ..what does it say about them? it just means that the this opp 'other' party can't achieve what our present govt can..
Hmm...trying to gain international support when you can't even get support within Singapore? Like many of us would say, "WAKE UP YOUR BLOODY IDEA!!!". What makes you so sure that you can be successful in garnering international support when you can't even do so on home ground? Eh...Mr. Chee??? HAHAHAHAHA
honestly who would feel happy if they were robbed of their freedom of speech and thought? they're restricted and punishable by law if u havent noticed yet! and just look at those speakers corner stuff u need a licence to voice minor opinions already u need licences for even basic human rights! who would enjoy violations of natural behavior? unless ur commie urself!
It sounds as though Singapore's free market capitalism might be upheld better by the PAP, than by the SDP. I admire this person for his civil disobedience, and for standing up for free speech and the freedom of assembly, but the fact that he criticizes the profit motive, and Singapore being a tax haven, doesn't bode well.
Mercer report also added high-quality housing, excellent household appliances selection, and most importantly many good schools n international schools in the city.
Mark Eliwood of Robert Walters, another Human Resource Consultancy noted that SG's strong position in all these factors stand the nation in good stead in the current financial crisis
Asia Pacific human resouce consultancy Mercer, in its latest Worldwide Quality of Living, shows that Singapore is Asia's most livable city, overtaking Paris, Honolulu n San 'Frisco. SG also topped Mercer's list of cities wi the best infrastructure in the world. It proved superior in areas, incl electricity, water supply, telephone n mail services, public transport, traffic congestion n range of international flights from local airports.
Singapore is named th 4th best country in the world, among 127 ranked countries, to do business in. Forbes Asia financial mag saw SG leapfrogging UK, Sweden, Ireland n Finland. SG kept its regional top position as the economy with the best business conditions in the Asia-Pacific. NZ was 5th, Aus 8th, HK9th.
SG attracts entrepreneurs, investors n workers. Business-friendly economies like SG, r in a better position to rebound from the global economic downturn. ,
Exactly, if the SDP party is focused on Freedom of Speech, so why the hidden comments?
Cruisser217 was commenting on Singapore's world rankings as I see them.
For Sgporeans to hide Singapore's world ranked comments..what does it say about them?
Emailling to Prez Obama's office? I've done that on his website to his office, and even recd a reply from his administration staff handling mail. that was during his pre-Prez term. It's real easy to connect with them. No prob.

Not a free speech country? I think so. But to me, what great about the SG government knows what they're doing. If it was't for them, the market crisis will just slap us into the age of deep shit

1be1ieve 2 years ago
Singapore is a small country that requires to stay ahead at all times in order to remain relevant or simply to survive. As with all revolution, we will have to undergo a downturn before we can benefit from it. But can we afford that downturn? The price of being freeer is too high.

He is unable to garner mass support because of the complete control of the media, the jailing and bankrupting of political activists and the elections department being under the Prime Minister.

The global economy may be slowing, but Sg has been rated as one of the top 4 in the world to invest in during these turbulent times.
Accounting giant KPMG surveyed 260 leading global companies n placed Sg behind China, US n India in 2009 as well as in 5 yrs' time.
Among SG's key factors attracting investors r the political stability, the impartial rule of law, n friendly tax regime.
"SG is impressive due to its tremendous capability to support wide regional activities of MNCs in Asia".

Not a free speech country? I think so. But to me, what great about the SG government knows what they're doing. If it was't for them, the market crisis will just slap us into the age of deep shit
