It warms my heart that Sagan visited Hofwijck, the center of Dutch intelligentia at that time. I think Huygens would have been thrilled if he could know. Few foreigners are aware of the important contributions of Christiaan Huygens and Antonie van Leeuwenhoek to science. Huygens wrote lovely poems too.
Unfortunately Sagan butchers these Dutch names. They are very hard for English speakers to properly pronounce, yes, but the best approximation for Leeuwenhoek would be "Layvenhook" and the best one for Huygens would be "High-gens". It's actually kind of distracting.

This is cool. Digging his appreciation of the freedom of the Dutch republic as I am from Holland. I live about three miles from Huyge'n' castle seen in this setion and go to Leiden University!
