It's difficult to label the Clash. They played all styles yet they were still the Clash. One of a few instances where all members were actually really great! These guys were awesome musicians. When Strummer passed away, that was my Kennedy/Lennon moment. I was numb. Miss you Joe
Well in any case, I do concur that very, very few examples of good bands exist in my estimation. Having said that, I do agree with your comment that the needles must be found within the haystack, the only difference being that the haystack is bigger than it ever was.
I identify viscerally with this track, I used to live in a high rise block in the early 80's. Strummer and Jones must have lived in one themselves at some point for them to write such perceptive lyrics.
i bought this album christmas eve 1980 and loved it right away. having lived through the awful mid 70's punk truly saved my life. too bad shit groups like green day turned the whole thing into a joke!
The "smart punks" doesn´t exist, The clash and the Sex Pistols were the only ones punks , they had a philosophy and a way of facing the world, the rest is shit, do not confuse your concepts........
@PartyBoy64 joe expressed very socialist thought, but i love him anyway. however if you think anarchy is bs, then you have some serious studying to do: mises.org
"Alianza dollars are spent...." Does anybody out there have the Phil Ochs song "United Fruit" from which this comes? My dad knows he's heard it and is dying to hear again. Thank you.
I used to go out with a guy who worked with them, and I went on the road a lot. I can say, of all the bands at that time, I never knew of any who could put out records where 99% of the songs were really GREAT. It was like one hit after another, going to a show, or listening to a record. You should have SEEN THEM when they were live in Central Park, or Shea Stadium with The Who! It was MAGIC! There is NO MUSIC NOW that COMES CLOSE to the innovation and enthusiasm of ANY bands back then.
i don't mean to pick on you but i reject the notion that there WAS some golden age and NOW things are fallow; that is basically a variation of "the good old days..." and "young people today..." I absolutely assure you that when the Clash etc. were in their prime in the late 70s, early 80s, making this music, someone was bemoaning how there was no Beatles or Elvis or whatever and that the MUSIC OF TODAY sucks compared to the good old days. Then as now, the needles must be found in the haystack.
Die2No: I'm with you as far as Iron Maiden is concerned, but I'm afraid I can't say the same concerning AC/DC. Anyhow, this should be a forum to post up about one of the Greatest, most short-lived bands ever, which is The Clash! As far as chriscony's assertion, it is true that people have always been bemoaning the current generation of pop/rock music; but really, to me this present generation of bands has not presented anything truly inspirational or much to be excited about.
@Indio156 Shea stadium, Central Park...that must have been intimate. I think you're wrong. There are more bands than ever these days that produce great music. And there is no need for big labels to be heard anymore. Branch out a bit further than your FCC regulated radio station or best buy cd selection. Not taking anything away from the Clash, but you just sound out-of-touch saying that no music is as innovative or enthusiastic. Get with the times hippy! lol

'fear is just another commodity here
they sell us peeping holes to peek when we hear
a bang on the door resoundingly clear
who would really want to move in here?
the children play faraway, the corridors are bare
this room is a cage its like captivity
how can anyone exist in such misery'

Take that Anarchy "A" off. Thats not what the clash was about. They were smart punks. Not idiot punks flagging that bullshit.
