  • A rainy fire escape is actually a very safe place to escape to in a fire, what with the water and all.

Good foresight, bro. Great focus work too.

  • Just like your Neon City video, I really like this aesthetically. Minimalist me, I suppose. Very relaxing video, Phil.

    Peace.

  • incase you havnt guessed it by now, phil lives in a massive castle!

  • We get rain for six months of the year... It gets old.

  • this was awesome when is the next beer summit?

  • The next beer summit is this Friday, Oct 9. Shall I save you a place?

  • Having a bit of camera envy here. Amazing collection of shots here, Phil. Really captured the feeling of the moment... I almost felt a cool breeze in fact.

  • That was Kelley's fart.

  • avdj should see this...

You're right. The comments section is all screwy. Looks like you're talking to yourself. lol

Talking to yourself in the rain... highly recommended...

  • I talk to myself anyway, so why not here? See you soon.

  • Nice use of depth of field.

  • Thanks. I'm just learning to use that, so I probably overdo it a bit.

  • interesting the way you played with that...editing or camera work?

(these buggy comment sections are driving me nuts!!!)

  • The focus and zooming were camera. Playing with speed was editing.

  • If you're inside a cozy home, the sound of rain is so comforting and relaxing.

  • I wish I had a more expansive view. That would be good for thunderstorms.

  • This was a good video, I love rain. It's raining here right now ;)

  • So this was redundant, right? :)

  • i'm 30 seconds in...there'd better be a point to this :P

  • No point at all.

  • Phil, this was nicely done and artistic to boot. Living here in Vegas, I never get to watch it rain anymore, so this was a nice treat.

  • Does it ever rain in Vegas at all?

  • Once in a great while. Maybe 2 or 3 times a year, but it only lasts for a few minutes. I miss it a lot.

  • Awesome vid. Pretty relaxing. Now if I only had a massive monitor to watch it full screen on. lol

  • Just sit really, really close.

  • Love the rocks back there...seems like you're in some exotic location!!

  • It"s New York. It is exotic!

  • This reminded me of my screen saver he he he he

  • favorited

  • Thank you.

  • Can I just put this on an endless loop and watch it on my tv all day and all night?

Great use of the pull focus - All my current cameras are so automated and "dummy proof" that I don't even know if I could over-ride them and do something like that. The downside of technology, I suppose.

  • Most of my cameras are all auto-focus, but the most recent one (Canon HG20) has the option of manual controls. AVDJ inspired me to start experimenting. I am still at the beginning stages, but even a relatively inexpensive camera you can get some interesting effects.

  • Its very relaxing

  • It is. I have watched it several times and It has a calming effect.

  • Awesome footage.

    So calming!

We got this storm in the Bronx, then it got FOGGY as hell!

  • Yes, it did get foggy last night. Fog, like snow, seems to make the city a little quieter.

  • The simple things we take for granted...beautiful!

  • I was surprised when I slowed it down how complex and chaotic the pattern of the drops became. All the things that go on unnoticed everyday.

  • The rain is KEWL. I LOVE to watch it snow too.

    Very artistic FB.

    Luvs ya,

    Mooz

  • Snow is on order :)

  • Very artistic! This is the summer of the rain video! ;)

  • I have seen a couple of others. Actually it was one on Vimeo that I saw that made me think to shoot out the window the next time it rained while I was home.

  • This is a thousand times better than the guy that made the "Watch my paint dry" video:) Seriously, I expected to see the brick wall of another apartment building when looking out your window. It looks like the middle of a mountain side, but I could still hear the sirens. What is really outside your window?

  • It is a large rock (Manhattan schist). If I had tilted the camera up you would see some trees above it and apartments on the other side of the block, but I decided to stay with the rock as background.

  • Very good video. I was expecting a grate video but I didn't actually see any grates:)

  • Haha! I have a grate over that window, but it hinges open so I can get to the fire escape.

  • At this point in the water boarding that was the

summer of 09, I am less fascinated than I am

waterlogged. Albeit, with an interesting crop of

mushrooms growing in the folds of my flesh.

    Pretty vid though.

  • We have had a bit much rain this summer.

  • That was beautiful.

  • Thank you.

  • You should put this on dvd and sell it.

  • Thanks, but it's no Candy Bra :-)

  • wow, that was beautiful...i never wouldve thought it would be that quiet in new york

  • I live in a rear apartment and it is usually quite quiet.

  • That was great Phil & strangely hypnotic.

    Loved the focussing too :)

  • I am still playing around with focus, and I think it shows in the video that I am experimenting, not really surefooted yet. But it is fun to experiment with it.

  • Very nice, love it!

  • Thanks.

  • very Tarkovskyesque.....I was waiting for you to levitate at some point.

    striking simplicity.

I wish I could read the comments but can't see any of them!! poo!

  • A few comments back mentioned Tarkovsky, with whom I am not familiar. Now that I have seen a few clips I want to see more.

And I am flattered by such a comparison, even in passing.

  • Five Stars my Friend!

  • Thank you.

  • FantasticBabblings, have you seen any of Tarkovsky's work?

  • Not until this comment. I have looked at a few clips and now I am curious.

  • You should definitely check out his films if you're willing to shelve out the $. Or if you have an eclectic movie rental store near you they might have some of his stuff. I would start with 'the mirror' or 'stalker'.

  • I found a few clips on YT, and I have added the two you suggested to my Netflix queue.

  • I love the rain so very much. Cloudy, overcast weather puts me in a great mood and makes me want to go for a walk.

  • Sometimes I like it. We have had a bit much this summer, but I can enjoy a rainy day.

  • THere's nothing like the refreshing smell, and sound of rain.

  • I wish I could have put the smell in the video.

  • FantasticRainings ;-)

  • It's fantastic as long as I am inside and dry ;)

  • FAKE!!! ;)

  • Yeah, it's all CGI.

  • I hope you'll take some footage from the same angle when there is snow melting on there with the melt water coating the surfaces, dripping and flowing rivulets.

I like the splash of green on the grey background.

I'm intrigued by the rock, is that a natural formation or a stacked wall?

  • The snow will be here soon enough. I don't look forward to it. The older I get the more I understand why people move to Florida.

The rock is a natural outcropping of Manhattan schist. It is the bedrock of this island and why so many tall buildings can be supported close together with all these underground tunnels. Most of the surface rock has been blasted from residential zones, but this one remained for some reason.

  • Will wait for the hail.

  • I hope I have my camera ready for that.

  • It always fascinates me to see a bug flying in the rain - the drops are bigger, yet somehow, the bug stays aloft. Interesting the way you kept changing focus and speed. I vaguely remember rain - thanks for the reminder1
