It blows my mind that people find Peart's lyrics pretentious. Pretentious is singing as though ones soul or capacity for emotion is somehow greater or more central than anyone elses. Peart actually writes about his opinions on things that haven't necessarily been covered in music before. That to me is the least pretentious thing you can do when writing a lyric. Rush music, and lyrics are to me utterly stunning.

The meaning of Peart's lyrics are very seldom difficult to grasp (which is part of their problem), you didn't have to clarify that much for me. He whacks us over the head with its meaning - you'd have to be an idiot not to figure it out with phrases like "we keep looking through the eyeglass in reverse" and "can't really feel what international means!" His ambitions are so overblown and obvious it makes me gag.
As much as I admire this band, I often want to tune out Peart's lyrics which are often terribly self-important and lame. This one comes off as trying to be a Really Important Song about a Really Important Issue and it makes me gag. It's great poetry but makes for a terribly pretentious lyric.

...not sure how you can admire them so much but hate Peart's lyrics.

I admire them as skilled musicians more than anything else. Peart's writing is at its best when it's cryptic minus all this didacticism.

yeah it should be about money, clothes, and hoes.

It's not the message that's important, its the delivery. Peart simply has no idea how to be subtle.
