I'm not a big Hells Angels advocate but they got a bad rap from the press. That guy that was murdered by the Angels (Marideth Hunter) was high on drugs, waving around a gun, and telling several people in the crowd that he was going to kill Mick Jaggar. He made his way closer to the stage acting crazy and the Angels killed him. If your making death threats with a loaded gun don't be surprised when someone kills you. The Angels saved the Stones and in turn got several false stories from the press.
First, I'm not solely a Stones freak. I love lots of types of music and bands. That said, every once in a while I am reminded of the outrageously, ridiculous catalog of great songs that the Stones have, most co-written by Keith. I love his songs, his guitar playing, and his singing. Quite simply, the man is the coolest, baddest fucking rock star ever, period.
The Hells Angel involved actually saved lives.. the gun weilding idot was high on meth and repeatedly rushed the stage with intent to harm Mick or other band members. It was accidently caught on film by the crew filming "Gimme Shelter." This 2 second footage was used in court and the biker was aquited for stabbing him in self defense. If not for him, one or more of the Stones could have been murdered right there on stage.
@atomic......the Hells Angels in england were NOTHING like the psychopaths that made up the american Hells Angels.........they didnt know who they had hired
@Atomicflash500 because the angels were affiliated with the grateful dead at the time but the dead ended up not going on stage that night because garcia pulled the plug on it. so the stones played with the deads security
I love that endpart when theyre hitchiking so much for some reason. It reminds of a time when me and my old mates were hitchiking and had to walk for HOURS on end. good memories......
Keith cracks me up talking about making music as work. It's not really work is it to get paid loads of money to sit on your ass playing your instrument? I'm glad he's still around even though he mostly just rehashes the same old riffs. And he looks more like he's in his 80s.
@gatortailor Haha its definitely work mate believe me! Dont underestimate musicians when all you see is the glamour on stage. There is SO much more that you have to do in order to make a living. Signings, constant travelling, radio shows, more driving, live tours, recording, mixing, mastering, writing, arranging, promoting, more driving...Playing for 2 hours straight is knackering let alone doing that plus everything else every day for a couple of years! But Im so glad they did keep going. x
@chloeunklebob I suppose. I was being a bit facetious, but I guess I'm a bit envious too. I'd trade jobs anyday. Ok, it's harder than it looks, I know. But actors though, they definately do not work and I hate it when they come on talk shows talking about how hard they work. Bullshit! LOL! Bugs the hell out of me! **** Will they tour this year, ya think? 50 years, you would think after lasting this long they would. Will I be able to afford tickets? Doubt it.
I'm really getting fed up of some of the rhetoric.. "What killed the idealism of the Hippies & the 1960s?" How about Nixon, the police, the CIA (who murdered at least 31 Black Panthers between '69 & '71, not to mention the Kennedys, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, etc.. & John Lennon). I was hoping Keith Richards would tell this guy "You don't know what you're talking about, mate"... Brian Jones did too many drugs and had a "weak constitution?" He was murdered for God's sake! What a lot of crap
@EuchridEucrow1 I know, I saw an interview in which he expressed his doubts, but he didn't discount the possibility either. There are 3 books about Brian Jones' death: once that the alleged murderer died, witnesses (like Jones' girlfriend at the time, Suki) finally talked; they didn't before cause they were afraid as the alleged murderer had quite a reputation for being a nasty piece of work.
But all that is beside the point: perhaps Jones wasn't murdered, but he certainly didn't die of drugs
@kidcalabria I read something about a death bed confession by one of the contractors working on Jones" house. I've seen Keith in interviews saying that he finds it difficult to believe Brian drowned, as he was a reasonably good swimmer.
@tonyfrombalt Absolutely. This contractor, Frank Thorogood, a man with a bad reputation & connected to East End criminals, was working on Brian Jones' house & that night demanded money which Jones couldn't give him on the spot. He might have not intended to drown him, maybe he was only trying to scare him, but Jones suffered from asthma, was kept under water too long & died. After Thorogood's deathbed confession 3 books on the subject came out round 1992/'93 & the findings seem pretty conclusive
I really enjoyed the interview, thanks for posting this justblues. Keith strikes me as a very empathetic, intellegent individual, know doubt a huge part of why the Stones have been so successful. Keep on rocking Brothers.
My favorite thing that Keith ever said, just after Princess Diana's death with all the ridiculous amounts of grief and wailing. Some British journalist asked him what he thought about it all. He just looked somewhat stunned, and said "I dunno. I never met the chick".
Thank you very much for this, it was wonderful to listen to a living legend give his take on life, loves and rock and roll. With all his faults and foibles Keith is an honest and a straightforward good hearted human being and we're all the better for having him around, Peace people!
Thanks for the post!! Great book!! I used to always say, "If Keith Richards ever puts out a book I'll be the first in line to buy it." In the book I'm glad he cleared up some of the urban legends about him and I also liked the inside stuff with his family and the days with Anita. Stuff outside of the scope of his music that typically you wouldn't hear about. Great stuff!!!
@woodbell67 That footage of the early Stones comes from an old Pathe Studios news reel entitled "Stones Gather No Moss" shown at movie theaters in the early 60's. Basically it said the Stones would be the next big thing. The footage you see is of them hitch-hiking in England. There were also shots of them in a dressing room and one song of them covering Chuck Berry's "Around and Around" song.
I'm 23 years old, I've grown up with their music, Keith has been my hero since I could talk and he'll be my hero when I die. Too bad musicians now aren't like this anymore. I have seen him play twice, hope to see him one more time! <3
@MariekeSnyw your so right, musicains aren't like that anymore, well at least not the mainstream ones you should check out some of the new blues musicians on the club circuit most of them are bloody good, especially people like oli brown :D
keith e o unico guitarrista completo de rock que conheço. pode ter olistas...base...mas completo e o keith...violao e eletrica. tem uns que solam bem..outros fazem base...keith faz tudo...e bem.
Read his book LIFE !!! It´s wonderful - intelligent, funny, emotional and that much more ... Keith don´t need to ask for your respect because you´ll give to him anyway - just by yourself with love and pleasure.
@Echnaton1954 in the process now, and so far it`s been a great story. Shows the man behind the myth, but also his dedication to the music they make. And they deserve the recognition the get. Not only for their own songs, but for showing the blues to a larger audience that it sadly probably wouldn`t reach. Still a "few" pages left though, but coupled with this interview it somehow all connects. Much respect for the man!
Keith Richards....Badass, innovator, performer, and good guy. This man has few regrets in life. AND he still has some great mates after all of these years. Who could ask for more? He seems like a truly happy person. We should all be so lucky.
