  • A guitar is a wooden box with wires on it.

  • What is the guitar he's holding for the first part?

  • Martin makes the best acoustics hands down bar none

  • some guitars with mahogany back and sides sound warmer and mellower than ones with rosewood back and sides but is that typically the way they are?

  • definately love the sound of the mahogany, it drew me more in

  • I keep on moving until I hear the sound of those guitars but this dude just fxxx keep on talking I hate him!

  • koa was so out of tune

  • Henry Juszkiewicz, Chairman and CEO of Gibson Guitar Corp., has responded to the August 24 raid of Gibson facilities in Nashville and Memphis by the Federal Government. In a press release, Juszkiewicz said: "Gibson is innocent and will fight to protect its rights. Gibson has complied with foreign laws and believes it is innocent of ANY wrong doing. We will fight aggressively to prove our innoce. GIBSON WILL BE ALL I WILL PLAY FROM NOW ON

MADE IN MEMPHIS TENN. GO GIBSON / AND RON PAUL

  • Geez. Strange comments with this video again.

  • If you pick closer to the soundhole instead of towards the saddle, you'll get rid of that tinty sound you're getting. =\

  • great video man. appreciate the explanation of the woods learned alot

  • "you gonna hear the difference".. not in 240p..

  • skip the bullshit and go to a music shop or pawn shop and play every guitar there. Doesn't matter if it's made from a pirate's peg leg, if you don't like it keep looking.

  • they all sound the same

  • GO CHEK OUT MY GUITAR VID an fir feedback. Thanks :-)

  • Hey! its dirk nowitzki!!

  • can you do the struming pattern video for that rhythm u played in this video plz.it sounds really kl

  • @xxxXMusicReviewXxxx No you don't! I have been paying for years! There are Skilled guitarists that use cheap guitars, if your Good it doesn't matter!

  • Tim thinks it's awesome, I'm Sold!

  • larivee, seems to be where quality and price get together jam their dicks up your ass (in the good way)

  • @AddictiveHerring There is a good way to getting a dick jammed up your ass? haha WTF.

  • i just want a basic acoustic guitar ;\

  • @iheartkathyy Watch my review of the Yamaha F310 Acoustic Guitar. Cheapest Yamaha Acoustic guitar, great quality and sound. It cost me £110, and that was with a starter kit which came with a DVD Tutorial, Guitar Tuner, 3 Guitar Picks, Spare strings and a Guitar strap. It's worth having a look mate.

  • to save all this confusion....go buy a martin hd 28.......ive had mine now for nearly 3 weeks....it will change your life...trust.

  • 5tonyvvvv.....never heard of "cockwood"....is it rare? is there a lot of overtones? is it from some exitic area? is it in the rosewood family.....mahogany.....or is it a variation of peckerwood ?

  • COCKWOOD! Nice Guitar, you dont need to spend 1.000 bucks , U JUST NEED SKILL!!

  • redwood

  • 666 videos...

  • Martin all the way!!!!

  • Great video - I've never met a guitar that I didn't like, but you cannot beat a Martin!

  • @MrHofner501 LOL. A Collings or Santa Cruz blows a machine made Martin out of the water. Sorry, you don't know much about what good tone is if you think Martin is the shizznet.

  • It is sad that so many really good guitar players REFUSE to admit that SOME “OFF SHORE” acoustic guitars sound BETTER than their Martin, Taylor or Gibson guitars. I have overspent on some of these guitars too, but I am not biased just because it is made in the “US“. The truth is that a guitar is some wood glued together with strings attached. Some "Off Shore" guitars do sound BETTER than some "US" made guitars.

  • Mic position will yield as many possibilities as different woods.

  • You're talking woo, a sound frequency is a frequency no matter the wood. 500khz is 500 khz. I bet you think amplifiers sound different and use monster cables.

  • They all sounded a bit trebly `cos you had the `mic on the bridge side during the comparison ! Shouldn`t the `mic be more on the bottom of the fretboard side ? Sounded great though ! Peace Ye`all !!

  • Could someone help me? I'm looking to get a decent acoustic guitar. In the video for Patience by Guns N Roses, I like the one Slash is using for the solos.... but I also like the one used in Broken by Seether. Can anyone give me wood types or guitar suggestions to get similar sounds?

  • click 1:32 again and again for dubstep lol

  • @14fallenskater i love dubstep lmao how did you find that and how much time do you have on your hands lmao!

  • ...mahogany for me too. I'm using a Martin OMC-15E, but I've changed the saddle to Tusq and I'm using Martin MFX740 phosphor bronze flex core strings. Gives the Martin even more bite. ...and of course I've added a touch of phase/reverb plus a little compression. Luverly!

  • Definitely D15!

  • Mahogany is my wood xD

  • Cedar top is good for nylon string, while spruce top is for steel string.

  • damn it's such a tough choice between the cedar and the spruce for me, but i think im favoring the spruce a tiny bit more :)

  • nice guy. good vids he does.

  • You forgot Strings and action height. Very low action height is easy to play but your sound will suffer. Taylor guitars also come equipped with Elixar strings [maybe not at the time of this video]. Bring a friend who plays when buying. Guitars sound different from the front than from behind. Good vid

  • @daveasc Thats a good point but its not crucial. Most guitar stores off free set ups where the action can be adjusted, and strings are interchangeable so this should not be your only criteria. but yes definitely bring someone who plays with you...or just ask the store clerk to do a demo.

  • Cedar is the wood for me!

  • this is the best video buy these guys im on the market for an acoustic now so this was really helpful

  • The real decision here is Martin Vs. Taylor. I Own a Martin and it is the best guitar ive ever owned. As far as live performance goes, Taylors are primo. They respond very well to electronics. This being said, when not plugged in Taylors, lack serious bass. If your looking for a guitar that is boomy, balanced and sounds great anywhere, Martin is the way to go.

  • cedar top = BOOM

    spruce top= more treble

    mahogany = a bit dull

koa top = even more treble than spruce

    Just my opinion ;)

  • out of tune all the way !

  • press the number 6 continuously and he says ew over and over and over and over

  • A bit repetitive, dude.

  • videos like this should be in hd with much better soundquality.

  • Bahaha, dude you're a bad Seinfeld, and I like it!

  • LAME SENSE OF HUMOR!!!!

  • @ohmysparticus So how does that make you feel now...BETTER? Great....silly human

  • the veal sucked

  • Try the Veil!!

  • I got 2 questions regaurding the first Taylor you played.

    1) model

    2) price

    I need answears fast. Thank´s

  • @gurregurr1997 Im pretty sure its a GS5, but not positive. You could get one for around $2000 if not a bit cheaper.

  • @papaschliten12 Is it like wrealllllllly worth the money??? I mean it sounds and looks lovely. But is it worth the money?

  • @gurregurr1997 In my opinion it is worth every penny. But I would recommend trying to find one first you could play with for awhile. You wouldn't want to spend that much money on something you don't absolutely love.

  • Alvarez all the way baby

  • What's your take on the new Performing Artist Series by Martin? They are Acoustic/Elec. compared to their older famous D-35, D-28, HD-35, D-18. I do tend to favor the cutaway models on the new series because the neck is easier transition from electrics. Your opinion is valued :-) Have a Happy Easter to you & the Crew.

  • Doing an acoustic guitar shoot out with an Sm 57 seems kinda pointless..

  • Ahhhh!! I love koa I use it for all of my performances.

  • dude - stfu I wanted to hear the guitar sounds not your babbling. How many times did you keep repeating about the woods over and over... not good

  • he sure knows his wood

  • its hard to tell the difference with the SM57 your using, I dont thin it expresses the fidelity of each guitar, I would like to heard this shoot out with like a AKG 414 or better yet a U87 :)

  • @bigbeatsnw i agree its defantly in need of a condenser

  • Get one of each brand that you like lol

  • no clue, all sound the same. imma just go to the store and ask what are some good guitar to play.

  • Gor for a taylor and/or a martin :D?

  • Cedar!

  • 1:32, 6 hours later..

  • Talk less, play more...

  • thanx geezer very kind of ya

  • Larrivee is the best!"

  • oops sorry, baseball cap on back to front. I'm outta here.

  • it would've been best to compare the exact guitar but just with a different front wood type. you can't compare a bunch of different brands and styles easily. maybe he was trying to show the largest sounding contrast so we could hear the difference easier. still....i would've liked to see the difference with the same guitar yet different wood only.

  • The retard can't strum the hole -.-

  • been playing for longer than I can remember, and he just taught me things about guitars I never knew. What he's talking about can also be applied to arch top jazz guitars as well. Every guitar has a different sound, the only difference is the craftsmanship. Martin and Taylor are tonally different but have good craftsmanship (for the most part). Eastman makes some nice flat tops with a were broad and even tonal specturm. Pick what ever YOU like, not what people say.

  • Neck thickness profile, nut width and string spacing. HUGE factor in comfort when buying an acoustic and that comfort will directly affect your ability to play. Then I check intonation if all the chords are in tune with each other. After I check where the action is at if theres any way to raise or lower bridge from where its at. No belly raise, no cracks or loose bracing or frets popping up? I wonder if the truss rod works hmmm. So much to consider.

  • Larrivee is the total package.

  • I'm really in doubt about buying a Breedlove AC25 SR Plus, Blueridge Br-163 and a maybe a Martin D1, can someone give me any useful advice?

  • @Aethernial As a Breedlove and Martin owner, I would advise against those two models you're looking at. Hands down, the best sounding acoustic guitars for under a grand in the world are Seagulls. Might I recommend The maritime series. Sounds like you're looking for Rosewood or Mahogany back and sides, and you will find both in the Seagull Maritime series. Go find a Seagull dealer, play a few, then pick your jaw back up off of the floor.

  • The KOA Martin sounds empty as shit to me. Sounds like a 12-string almost. Way too glassy. Also, I normally love this guy's lessons but this probably should have been a 3-5 minute video. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to long-winded.

  • Excellent presentation. Great explanation. Thanks!

  • i try to figure out the difference but i get lost in the great sound of the guitar :D

  • can someone give me their opinion on what the best guitar is at nevada please. I have 200 pound to spend on one.

  • go for taylor dude

  • taylor is the choice for me.

  • @JMorr1029 My Tanglewood matches a Taylor for half the cost. I do like Taylor's however, just believe they're over priced. When you can get a Collings (one of the best guitars ever made handcrafted by one man) for the same price as what they charge for a Taylor (half machine made by nearly a dozen different people), there's something wrong.

  • Which Taylor model are the first one?

  • Can you please tell me what are the chords that you've played in this video? Thanks.

  • @uc38 just some basic chords.. G, Cadd9, G, D, Dsus2, D, Dsus4, D, Cadd9, G, Em, C

  • taylor is good looking and sounds not to bad thumbs up !

  • play the guitars oh man..

  • you have the same guitar as me

  • ALWAYS, buy steel string acoustic.

  • thats funny they use to sell those KOA guitars for about $450.00 now they are 3 times the price.about 8 years later.I know I was talked out of buying one because I was told that was a cheap Martin!!!! ha ha ha

  • of course the martin koa gonna sound different its a parlor not a dreadknot which has a different sound altogether

  • jk, koa wood is probably the best and most different sound, thanks for the showing, im looking to buy my first guitar here soon.

  • i can't tell a difference :) haha

  • when i buy an acoustics the most important thing is that the last frets are aprochable unlike this guitar....

  • @Blademaster7777777 Cutaways ftw.

  • @Blademaster7777777 your talking about a cut away body. it doesn't really affect the sound. i can play all the frets at the bottom without a cut away. it just takes some practice.

  • @Blademaster7777777 Well, ya' see, the original dreadnought style/acoustic style guitar is made like that because acoustic guitars are generally played lower, so you don't need the high frets, electric you play higher notes, and so if you really want them you can reach around, but that's also why cutaways exist, so you can get up high. To me the most important thing isn't where I can reach, it's how it sounds, and that's how it always should be.

  • I'm selling a really nice in a huge beginner bundle on eBay, check my youtube channel for the video of what's all included.

  • The Koa Martin wins hands down and is only going to sound better with playing and time. Most of my guitars are vintage guitars, which I believe is a better purchase than a buying a new model. Bracing was not mentioned in this video and is also responsible for much of a guitars' sound.

  • he looks in the camera like: 'Well, wat do you think, what do you think?'

  • less talking more playing

  • First off, every guitar sounds different. Build has as much or more to do with the sound as the type of wood. Too many people see a brand name and go for it. I've seen a $1000 guitar sound better than a $4000 guitar. It really is a matter of playing as much as you can get your hands on and then choosing that special one.

  • what is the best acoustic guitar for someone with small hands. Help please!!!!

  • @musiclover2161 Baby Taylor is very good.

    watch?v=v57fXKp5lY0

  • @musiclover2161 Get a 3-4 scale guitar

  • @musiclover2161 Try a Mandolin......good for small hands........

  • @musiclover2161 baby taylor or the baby taylor's alternative --the martin backpacker which is what i have. um if i could take it back id get the baby taylor cause after a while the backpacker starts to sound cheap.

  • OK, two things for the guitar tone demos. First turn off the compression - it is pumping like mad. Second, no chat in between - just play them one after the other. You can reprise them later for talking.

  • Nice! I'm in the market for an acoustic and this was good help.

Big problem: the SM57 will never show the guitar tone with accuracy. The things you explained about the woods are helpful. But the tone demos, wile giving some comparativeness, are just not valid. That mid range boost and rolled off treble of the mic is coloring all the sounds and make the guitars sound nearly the same!

  • did anyone else feel that awkward silence when he told that joke at the beginning and you didnt laugh?

  • @GManCena14 Oh yes.

  • my next ax man!!!!!

  • It all depends on the sound and feel you're going for. He seems to dismiss any other guitar that does not have a "sitka spruce top"! It sounds like a sales pitch! I love the deep sound of the Martin D15 and It plays like a dream. If you're planning to buy an acoustic guitar, play it...compare it to as many as possible....go back to the one you feel gives you the best sound and compare them all again. Then, buy the one you like the SOUND and FEEL of the most..you won't be disappointed!!!

  • Go for a Martin

  • @firecrack789 taylor*

  • @firecrack789 Well, we /all/ know that. :P Only problem is Martin's cheapest model is the DCXE series (For full size. Pretty sure that's the right one.) which are probably made in Mexico and they're still about 700 bucks. Some people just don't have that money. Taylors are also the best for certain styles, like celtic kind of open strumming. But, this is why other brands exist. For 500 under acoustics you should buy Takamines or Yamaha. Laguna's good too. :P But, Martin's always been the best.

  • @Songwriter4God Indeed. If you're a beginning guitarist then i don't think any of the guitars this guy played would be suitable choices. My first guitar was a 200 dollar Yamaha. But if you have a fair amount of experience under your belt, go for a Martin haha

  • Comment removed

  • @firecrack Yeah. My first guitar was an Eterna (By Yamaha) EF-31 which sounds great! I have Elixir strings on it now and it sounds just as good as any 600 dollar guitar. I just found out yesterday my parents might've paid 74 or 100 bucks for it, too. :P Then I also discovered a what I think is 1993 Bently acoustic guitar, which appears to be a definite Martin copy. :P Only problem is the neck's out of whack, need to get it fixed. I started with a cheapee, but I only play Martins at GC. :P

  • @Songwriter4God Yeh I tried one of them DCXE series acoustics. Composite laminate materials. Surprised me some a very good sounding and well made guitar. I was getting a mojo from it which blew my wood snobbery. Yamaha and Norman acoustics have always been a safe go to acoustic in the budget range for myself. I've owned 2 Gibson J50s from the 60s that were canons but to the point of justifying the price I can't say they have the best build quality. Martins seem more solid built.

  • @GameLevelEditor Yeah, I can't stand Gibson acoustics. And barely electrics. :P I'm more of strat guy, I like Fenders and PRSs. (:P) Yeah,. the DCXE series is REALLY good, they have a black one at my GC and I LOVE it, and it's only 700 bucks! But, yeah, some guitars really can surprise people, no matter what they're made of.

  • @firecrack789

    The headstock is ugly. BOOM!

  • @firecrack789 noobs always go for martins or taylor

  • some nice guitars. koa sounded the worst. this was also a bit redundant. what was the first taylor you played before the GS8?

  • Thank you so much! Now I know what is the best to go for. Spruce top :]

  • All different woods for all different styles i think ?

  • Excellent video. I sell guitars and you were exactly on with all of your explanations.

  • good video..but no offence you should not look at the camera like forever...its annoying to ppl who watch u look stupid

  • @DaWn0FTheDead that staring has got to stop. Maybe it wouldn't be so annoying if his hat wasn't on backwards.

  • @ogenmatic exactly

  • spruce > cedar. Taylor < Martin. eargasm for the koa martin

  • FYYSB

YES, that is all you need to know!

    Fuck

    You

    You

    Silly

    Bastard

  • Second guitar with spruce top, for me sound the best. It have most clear sound.

Вторая гитара с верхом из ели, на мой вкус, звучит лучше всех. Так как у нее наиболее чистый звук.

  • My ears must suck, I could not tell any difference between the two guitars.

  • @jfhalshsfdalkj ..

then yur ears do suck! XD

  • Finally, someone who finally puts it in simple context!

  • I applaud his effort to make acoustic buying easier, it seems a little elementary though. So much can influence how an acoustic sounds. A spruce top guitar with martins A bracing may sound different than a spruce top with the pre-war X bracing. The world of sound is pretty amazing.

  • no saves tocar otra cosa? o que! XD

  • society needs teachers as well and Dave is brilliant !

there are some posted comments here from some true idiots; society has plenty of them as well !

  • Dave, thanks for great video. I've been looking for an unbiased explanation of guitar characteristics. It is very difficult to get this kind of info. That 'Kona' sound was very interesting. I thought Spruce was my favorite, but now I don't know. I'll at least have a little guideline when I go try them. Thanks again.

  • And there's soo many different woods that they use, woods like..... Spruce, cedar, rosewood, mahogany, cherry, walnut,redwood,ash......ahhh...........rosewood, zebra-wood XD

  • man can u please pull ur ears out of that stupid hat thanks.

  • thanks for the video

  • Solid Spruce top all the way..

  • This guy is good..people lol

  • what the fuk is he lookin at?

  • Thanks for the information and advice.

  • the ceder top sounds like crap!

  • @cottoneyejoe1 I couldn't disagree more. Nice rich tone to it.

  • The thing is I can't even play guitar, so how am I supposed to try them out at the store? :/

  • i like the cedar most, it sounds like an older guitar. im not a huge fan of brightness in acoustics, i like the ones that sound older and mellower

  • "they use stuff like Ash, redwood, Zebrawood, redwood, rosewood." hahaha wtf

  • Comment removed

  • Wow - this is so informative. Thanks for posting!

Think I'd go for the Mahogany top, followed by Koa ... didn't like the Stika Spruce one

  • D-15 sounded best imo

  • good job David
