This solution didn't work for me. But after much trial and error, what DID work was to replace the dv tape with a new one. A DV tape that has been used for SD recording and then re-cycled to record HD will result in the problems outlined above. A tape that has only been used to record HD works fine.
Thank you sir soooooo much. I had my Canon HV30 for almost 3 years and couldn't figure out how to capture my vids in HD. Everytime I hooked it up to my firewire to capture on WIndows Movie Maker, it would only capture my vids in SD. But after watching this, I tried out Sony Vegas trial on my pc and the program works beautifully. Thank you so much for showing me Sony Vegas. I can now watch my recorded videos in full 1080p. You truly are a great man.
hey, i have a Sony CCD-TRV608, and I want to know how to capture the video in HD or something better to the resolution of 320x240 that is what marks me in Sony Vegas, you might say to me please how I can do it? thnx.
@ZyckVoy The Sony TRV608 is a analog video camera, which doesn't shoot HD. There's no way to capture HD video from this camera. The low resolution 320X240 is due to the USB capture mode. If you want better video and better capture, you'll have to get a better video camera. The TRV608 was great when it came out in 2002, but things have changed since then.
Just for clarification, anybody...this capturing applies to both already recorded video that is playing back in play mode, PLUS capturing while recording live? ty!
I have a question. Why is it that when im preview or recording, the audio is about 1sec late and is not in sync with the video, but after the video is outputed as an .avi, its perfectly fine. Is there any way to fix the audio during previewing so it can sync up with the video? Also is there a way to change the outputed file type?
@Kuribohchaos8 Previewing real time video is CPU intensive. If your computer is not powerful enough or doesn't have enough memory, it might not be able to keep audio and video in sync in the preview. You can try reducing your preview window settings to 'preview, auto', which gives a lower quality preview, but often resolves the sync issue.
Hey Bill, I recently got the Canon HV40 and I use Sony Vegas Pro 8 to edit. I recently shot some tests clips with it, and Vegas captured them fine. However, it filled my project media tab with 999 clips, and each clip lasts about .01seconds. Is there some setting I have turned on or something? Its obviously a hassle to do anything with almost a thousand clips that are .01 sec in length. Thank you I hope you can help.
Hi Bill, you've probably already answered this question before but i haven't seen it. I have an hv30 camera and a dell laptop. my laptop doesn't come with fire-wire port that i need to connect the camera to. i bought an external express fire-wire card and it seems it only wants to work when it feels like it. Ive captured in both hd and dv and messed with the settings nothing happened. i downloaded the hdv program and nothing. if there's anyway you think you can help me please let me know Thanks
hey, great video but i have a question you may be able to help me with.
I am trying to capture a video through my handycam camera through firewire, but whenever i try to capture it, my webcam always comes up. is there any way i can make it capture the camera instead of the webcam? thanks
Hi Bill, I shot a movie yesterday on a Cannon HD video camera, I had no problem uploading the videos and I can import the media into my sony vegas pro 8 but when I put the video on the track it is in slow motion and out of sink in my sony vegas preview player. Can you please help? Thanks for the help in the pass and your video's are awesome.
Hi, I am using Sony Vegas Pro 9 Trial and when I go to options/preferences there actually is no "video" tab. From looking at your screen I have far fewer choices than yours and "video" is not one of them. Any ideas?
Do you have any idea how to capture HD video on Pinnacle Studio 11 or Corel Video Studio 12? The .m2v file is not being recognized by the programs and when I capture it just shows a black screen. I would REALLLY appreciate a response as I've been struggling with this for a long time.
WOW thank you so much for uploading this!! I just bought an HV 20 and this Video really answered lots of my question, since i use vegas 7 aswell. Thanks you so much :)
It only seems to work if I capture live footage while the camera is connected to the computer. How can you capture pre recorded footage to the computer off the tape?
I'm using Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9, and I've checked the cable. But Sony Vegas only let's me capture when I choose the standard defintion capture option.
Hv30 users/filmmakers reccomended me Sony Vegas 9, mine is the new one Platinum, it's pretty intense. You would need a firewire port ton your pc/laptop o attach it to your camcorder on the HDV/DV port.
Hi bill. For some reason this tip isnt working for me. When i go to preferences and then video, it just says "preferred video capture application" and doesnt give me the option to check or uncheck!! please help me!
Bill! Thanks so much for this tip I was getting really worried about my new HV30 not working with Vegas 8.. now it does :) I subbed because of this thanks so much again!
it comes with a program called pixela or imagmaker 3. It turns the files into M2t files, then you copy them to window. with sony vegas open i drag them into the media area when i have project media open.
only problem, if i drag 1 file i end up with three or four duplicates back in the folder i dragged from?
If Windows does not recognize the camcorder when you connect it to the computer and turn it on, it means the problem is with either the firewire cable, the computer or the camcorder.
Until the computer recognizes and alerts you when the camcorder is connected and turned on, you won't be able to get the camcorder to connect to Vegas.

If trying to capture HD video from the HV30, in Sony Movie Studio, select 'options', 'preferences', 'video', and make sure 'use external video capture application' is unchecked.

@MrGojira95 There isn't a video tab in Sony Vegas. But there is a videoFX tab for video effects.

It is very possible the problem is with project properties, and the setting of your preview window.
Set the project properties to match the imported video clips, then set the preview window to 'preview, auto'

I have tried Sony Vegas 7.0, HDVsplit, adobe premiere CS3 & CS4, Windows Movie Maker
and two other free-ware programs I have at home.
I have tried hd settings, hdv settings, and ntsc settings.
I have tried a pc using Windows Vista and two other ones using Windows XP SP2.
I have tried two different cables 1)4-pin firewire to 4-pin firewire and 2)a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable.
I have spent over 17 hours in 2 days trying to get any of these things in different variations to work.
Any ideas?

If you have recorded using HD, you need to change one setting in Sony Vegas so the camcorder is recognized.
In Sony Vegas, select 'options', 'preferences','video', and uncheck 'use external capture application'.
This will vegas and movie studio platinum to capture HD video

into sony vegas 9 the screen in my camera says( playback std locked playback is restricted) is this something from my camera or from sony vegas.
jmanny666 3 years ago
The message you see is from the camera and indicates you have both HD and SD video on the tape.
You need to set the playback to be either HD or SD depending on the clip.
Mixing them on the same tape is never a good idea, but setting the playback option in the camcorder to match the video format should resolve this.
See page 40 of the camera manual

I use Camtasia Studio to record my screen tutorials, and the Camtasia Recorder has the ability to follow your mouse and autozoom.
I prefer not to use the mouse follow, and just do the Zoom and Pan in Camtasia editor.
This gives me more control.
