Something I dont like of the paper series, is that the characters seem to join you just because "you are great" "you are THE MARIO" "yeah! let's save the world" but that's it, on the thousand year door they fixed that thing a little bit, but still, it's hard to see those characters the way I saw the SMRPG ones. But don't get me wrong, I love Paper Mario... I just think that no matter how many characters they add to your party, they're not.... charismatic.

ALOT of people will disagree with you, and i am one of them. i think SMRPG is good paper mario 2 was good, and paper mario 3 is awsome cause you can use luigi. in all, i think SMRPG is better than most games in the world. it's almost comparable to LOZ:OoT.

I love both games, but Paper Mario's gameplay is more refined, the story is better and more engrossing, it's longer, the music is more imaginative... All I'm saying is don't hate it because it's not a follow-up to Super Mario RPG, you're only denying yourself another unforgettable game experience.

@HelterMcSkelter I agree. There seems to be a lot more innovation in Mario RPG and the creatures and characters are a lot richer. Also, I know the theme of paper mario is obviously paper, but the overky-simple character designs really sucks the interest out of them. After a while it starts to just look like squares and triangles.

Square Enix should make Paper Mario 3ds. They made Mario Sports Mix and Mario hoops 3 on 3 so they could make Paper Mario 3ds since Super Mario RPG was a good game.

@PhazonOmega Double Pain in TTYD did essentially that, and the Challenge Medal in Bowser's Inside Story did the same. Personally, it's far better as an item since you can un-equip it.
@PhazonOmega There is one already out actually, and it's made with RPG Maker. It looks good enough to have been made by Nintendo man, it's called "Super Mario RPG: Seven Sages".
@PhazonOmega just so you know, if you havent heard of it, theres a hack you can download to run SMRPG on an emulator, that basically amps up the difficulty curve to be more on par with other RPG's of the time

However, if you look at the trailer offered by the 3DS it does seem to revert to turn based but from what i've seen so far it looks bastardized, having power ups like scissors, a fan, or even folding them into paper planes, making for many 1-turned fights. I looked deperatley all over youtube for better vids to confirm/disproof this theory so until then we'll have to wait and hope.
@Brqwerty i find the way the scissors fan and the folding thing not useful those types of things should be used for solving puzzles outside the battle just like in paper mario 2 with the paper powers to fly and go 2d-er lol

Super Mario RPG was developed by Square (Square Enix). Additionally, Square had no involvement in Paper Mario. Maybe Super Mario RPG 2 existed and was scraped and development began soon after for Paper Mario, but odds are, to refer to the beta of Paper Mario as "Super Mario RPG 2" is erroneous.

And for the record, Square ≠ Square Enix; the squenix merge happened 20 years after Square was established

During the snes era, they signed a deal with each other to work on an add on for the snes, but nintendo gave up on them and which made sony work on the ps1. Gotta give a point to them.

Paper Mario was orginally developed by Square as Super Mario RPG 2, but then Square left Nintendo and joined Sony (Final Fantasy 7 was meant to be for the Nintendo 64, but Square wanted to use the Playstation's disk system rather than a cartridge system because they thought it was more powerful, so left Nintendo). Since the game was so close to completion, Nintendo had Intelligent Systems finish the game, and renamed it Paper Mario, to reflect the 2D style already in place.

I never finished Paper Mario. I liked some aspects of the game, but overall I thought it was a watered down version of SMRPG.

@HelterMcSkelter Paper mario has a great aesthetic, I wish Mario RPG had that, but the story is too formulaic. Always the 7 stars and the wishes and shit, and the characters arent as well defined. Mario RPG has the exciment of being something new and dangerous that Square and Nintendo were going into, Paper mario was more of the same. Luigi & Mario superstar saga on the other hand have a bit more creativity put into them in gameplay, I enjoy those more than Paper Mario.

@HelterMcSkelter I agree. There seems to be a lot more innovation in Mario RPG and the creatures and characters are a lot richer. Also, I know the theme of paper mario is obviously paper, but the overky-simple character designs really sucks the interest out of them. After a while it starts to just look like squares and triangles.

Square Enix should make Paper Mario 3ds. They made Mario Sports Mix and Mario hoops 3 on 3 so they could make Paper Mario 3ds since Super Mario RPG was a good game.

You know what would be cool? Making a Mario RPG like 7 Stars or Paper Mario that had 2 difficulty levels. That way, the neophytes aren't overwhelmed, but the more seasoned can take on a challenge. That'd be cool. I'd love to play an RPG that is tough like I remember 7 Stars being when I first played it.

@PhazonOmega just so you know, if you havent heard of it, theres a hack you can download to run SMRPG on an emulator, that basically amps up the difficulty curve to be more on par with other RPG's of the time

However, if you look at the trailer offered by the 3DS it does seem to revert to turn based but from what i've seen so far it looks bastardized, having power ups like scissors, a fan, or even folding them into paper planes, making for many 1-turned fights. I looked deperatley all over youtube for better vids to confirm/disproof this theory so until then we'll have to wait and hope.

just like this trailer, the 3ds one shows unfinished content. you shouldnt assume the games going to be "bastardized" just because of a few fancy attacks. who knows? maybe these are like the star power moves for this game. we dont know. its confirmed to be a turn based rpg and there will be partners, thats all we really know.

So basically what we do have on the nintendo 64 is SMRPG2, just not called that because of the first game's association with squaresoft. It was just a simple title change to avoid a lawsuit from the developer that left them, for ANOTHER company that left them. Curse you Sony.

I'm skeptical that this was ever "Super Mario RPG 2". I could be wrong, but...
Super Mario RPG was developed by Square (Square Enix). Additionally, Square had no involvement in Paper Mario. Maybe Super Mario RPG 2 existed and was scraped and development began soon after for Paper Mario, but odds are, to refer to the beta of Paper Mario as "Super Mario RPG 2" is erroneous.

And for the record, Square ≠ Square Enix; the squenix merge happened 20 years after Square was established

I think i know why nintendo and sony are dissing each other.
During the snes era, they signed a deal with each other to work on an add on for the snes, but nintendo gave up on them and which made sony work on the ps1. Gotta give a point to them.

@timeparadox888 Well... it actually went down like this, Nintendo was planning on making a sequel to Super Mario RPG but that was when square got a contract from Sony and moved over to Sony so Nintendo ended up making paper Mario so Geno would have been in it but square is being a group of retards and wont give them copyrights!

Paper Mario was orginally developed by Square as Super Mario RPG 2, but then Square left Nintendo and joined Sony (Final Fantasy 7 was meant to be for the Nintendo 64, but Square wanted to use the Playstation's disk system rather than a cartridge system because they thought it was more powerful, so left Nintendo). Since the game was so close to completion, Nintendo had Intelligent Systems finish the game, and renamed it Paper Mario, to reflect the 2D style already in place.
