  • 1:05 early Mr Knowitalll Primus

  • Les is a blonde?

  • does anyone know where marc biedermann is?

  • haha blind illusion's immigrint song is better than the original!

  • He had so much focus back then. That hair blocked out the rest of the world and just left him and his bass.

  • Naaahh...fuck this dude... this is impossible...

  • @sean6932

actually the bass is the instrument you hear best in this video.... :D

  • @sean6932

well I do ^^ If you listen to sane in the asylum.... fits perfectly... shame they didn't get more attention ^

  • cliff burton my ass, Les Claypool a real bass player

  • @ksrthrash hahaha yeah!

  • @ksrthrash they are two of the best bassists in the world with very different techniques why compare them when you can enjoy each for their individual merit

  • @ksrthrash whoa whoa, why attack cliff? you couldve said the guy from fall out boy, or fieldy!!!

  • @ksrthrash Dude , what the hell? respect Cliff

  • @ksrthrash respect to Burton.. but.... Claypool KICK ASSSSSS!!!!!!!!!

  • you must be embarrassed to have played with dribble les, whatever cunts

  • 80's RULED!!!

  • 0:46 - 0:50

    So much swag.

  • Marc (Blind Illusion) taught him how to play bass in high school. Don't believe wiki. Marc told me about it when I was at The City of 10,000 Buddhas back in 1998. Marc's better though.

  • I like how the first part was just messing around... then he's like... Oh but I can also play the bass. Watch! And then he goes into the slapping frenzy followed by his plucking insanity.

  • woooooooooooooooooooow!!!! les claypool!!

  • Comment removed

  • no les has not just stuck to bass he is also an accomplished banjo player, other than that there is not much more to him other than the fact that he is a very talented ASSHOLE.

  • i think i need towel

  • he had a carl thompson all the way back from blind illusion? O_O

  • @erasermcfleafly dude i dont think Les has ever used anything but a Carl Thompson, he owns seven different ones, most are just for backup... now that takes dedication to a brand, to spend at least 5 grand for a back up bass

  • @SlowmoLife i just find it surprising that hes never played anything else. most of them work their way up to a badass bass. but thats all les has ever used.

  • What kind of nutcase has a whammy bar on his bass?!

  • @HardRhyma someone whos innovative. in fact many bassists use it. like Stanley clarke.

  • @HardRhyma Obviously you don't listen to primus much :D

  • @HardRhyma

wow, you need to ask that? Les is GOD, and a whammy bar on his bass...because he can.

  • @HardRhyma Kahler 4-String BassTremolo Bridge

  • This is a fucking RELIC. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

  • SKrY209.tk CHECKIT!!!

  • a modern day frank zappa.... to say the least

  • Was Evan McCaskey in the band at this time?

  • this is not just playing a bass, this is master-BASS-tion!!!!

  • Immigrant song FTW!!!

  • Yes Mr. Claypool, you were too good for Metallica

  • after watching to 2:13 i said out loud "wow i need to practice." no joke

  • This is a pretty outstanding little piece. Les was shredding mad funk even way back in the Blind Illusion days. He's consistent with his rhythms, even though they come in sections of just a few seconds. I agree with zaiger16, he clearly gets bored quickly with what he's doing. However, while he's doing it for those several seconds, he's doing it right :)

Thanks a lot for posting this video, it's a refreshing take on the bass guitar and where/how it can stand in with thrash metal.

  • dude he fucking took that bass for a walk! holy shit!

  • Les Claypool sucks.

  • Les is awsome, Primus is the best band in history, but he can't solo for shit. He gets bored of whatever he's playing within like, three seconds. His solo's always come out akward and clumsy. Way better when he's jamming off other players

  • @zaiger16 That's not always necessarily true but for the most part yes....

  • Don't Forget Bout Ler.

  • @Rumpalipali123

have you seen anything else with him?

hes got more rhythm then anybody.

  • @Rumpalipali123 Who cares about writing songs if we are talking about bass skills? And also, if you think what Les plays is shit, then im sry bro, but you failed at searching for his video lol.

  • @Rumpalipali123 well it seems you don't really have listened to primus, oysterhead, sausage or any of claypool's bands, if you had listened to them you would know claypool as song writter, and maybe it could open a little your mind closed conception of the bass. also, cliff burton was good but he is an amateur compared to claypool.

  • Steve GiGiorgio is good but doesn't have the creativity and latitude Les has.

  • Wow that Led Zeppelin cover sucked. And who's that bass player with a whammy bar, doing solos and all? That guy might get big some day, he kicks ass.

  • @senna01 lol

  • @senna01 This was aaaages ago, he's pretty big now. ^^

  • he is a very funny guy (in the good way!) his bass is the same that he is using till now or not?

  • his bass is the same that he is using till now or not?

  • @argonauths yeah think so. apparently its a carl thompson bass.

  • to all the faggot metallica fans that wont stfu about cliff burton, watch this and shut your fucking pie hole

  • never posted before. are you guys all fucktards ? none of you can put together an actual sentence. do your wives and children know how stupid you are ? Les Claypool is awesome needless to say however i have to go have sex. With a girl. WOW sucks too. why dont you EMO herbs bitch about that ? or keep up this super duper hard ass battle about bass players. douchebags

  • HIIIIII MOM ITS HOWDY DOODY TIME

  • PRIMUS SUCKS!!!

  • stop arguing sons of the tightass and enjoy the show

  • What would blindillution com be worth to some one?

  • sooo yeah after this i am totally learning the bass yeah i know i will never be this could but to be a milionth of this good would still make me amazing

  • H O L Y S H I T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Is it just me, or does Les Claypool have a case of Benjamin Button? He seems to get better and better the more years you go back!

  • @Chris08166 it's just you. his timing is way off in this solo.

  • Epic solo. Apparently Blind Illusion's new album is crap.

  • he is too good for blind illusion

  • i dont like his style, too funky for me. but he is really good! so dont bash me.

  • Wow I had the sane asylum on cassette way back when it was released and never knew Les was the bassist until now.All these year's since my tape got snagged I decided to see if Blind Illusion was even on youtube too haha.

  • Blind Illusion didnt endured cause, no band can put Les bass in second plan...

  • How stoned must he be.. i feeling he's pretty stoned but still top ten of bassists

  • Les Claypool is the Genius in all of us. Not only does he slap down the most organized chaos I've ever heard as the rhythm for a song but his frontmanship, stage attire and antics are undeniable! Let the truth be what it is, Les is way to good and has way to many active brain cells to burn on his own ideas to play one note lines as a Metallica fill-in. I'm sure that to Les music is more than fast volume and fame.

  • does Mark flip off the crowd at 2:51? lol

  • to everyone arguing about claypool trujillo and cliff burton n the whole metallica decision...metallica said that les claypool was the best audition but they also said he could and most likely on accident show them up so they went with someone aka trujillo who was second best

  • @thenewsickness Dude they went with Newstead.

  • @Xais56 Newstead left the band and they held another audition where claypool and trujillo were there. Les would and could out stage metallica but Robert played very similar to Cliff so they chose him

  • @thenewsickness from what I understand Claypool auditioned after Cliff died.

  • @powerslave2metal he did. he is a friend of kirk and when he auditioned they told him he was too good

  • this is one of the craziest claypool solos ive seen so far

  • no offence but your technique is awesome... but ... sucks ... i dont know why ,,, but i dont like it

  • im guessing thats ler on the far left

  • U rock Les even in a crap band..........

  • @CoolKodiak are you serious? Blind Illusion is fucking awesome listen to their album The Sane Asylum

  • starting at 1:05 is mr. knowitall for a few seconds

  • 1989

  • wut year was this? does anyone knoes

  • Late 70´s or early 80´s propably.

  • more likely the mid 80's because blind illusion was active for 1979 - 1989

  • @basi187 probably 85 or 86

  • Marc Biedermann wrote songs that stand the test of time.... Metallidorks wouldn't hire Les...that speaks volumes...."oil leads us to the slaughter... greed will eat at your soul...terrorists roam my streets now they are minefields".."when killing is fashion we all must kill" "kill for peace kill for land killing time vengeance is mine" sorry Hetfield, you are proud that Enter Sandman was used to torture Iraqi prisoners? You lose...Biedermann and Les'n'Larr win! ya frickin' douche...

  • lol are you serious?

pretty sure hetfield is happy with his success.

and maybe they didnt hire him because his style wouldnt really fit with their music.

honestly bass solo's are a bit boring a way to show off skill more than make a song someone would listen to. that is my opinion dont take it to heart if you dont like it.

  • @spaztikcamel see maxwell murder from rancid great bass solo there and it really fits with the music

  • @RATMblink182

ah someone who understands that it should fit with the music.

had a look not to my style but much better and yes does fit with the music.

  • @spaztikcamel ye this song refreshed my faith in bass solos

  • and metallica hasnt stood the test of time? only a douche would hate on a band that has been together for 4 decades... james hetfield would dick slap u and laugh.

  • More like 3 decades, but yeah.

  • im so glad claypool didn't stick with metal and went on to form primus, and im even more glad he didnt join metallica because think of all the primus albums that wouldnt of happened or all the other sit hes done. goofy rock funk slap bass is better than any metal bass

  • Dont be so gay. Bass guitar is awesome no matter what style its played in

  • how am i being gay, i didnt say all metal bass sucks, i just think that slap bass is better, so why dont you stop being so "gay"

  • what year is this..

  • you people are all retarded...Les claypool is a great frontman, Bass player and is packed full of ideas that he's willing to throw into music. Trujillo is a fucking novest next to claypool. last but not least Burton is dead yes it sucks and we all wonder what Metallica would be like if he were still here but he's not. When it comes to original, slapp your mama funk bass with a dash of humor Les Claypool can't be beat.

  • @Pudge315 Victor Wooten would whip his ass with les

  • @Pudge315 Trujillo is good, im sad he's in metallica now, hes a far better bassist than they've ever had, just at this point metallic sucks because they used up all of mustaines material after ride the lightening.

  • Yeah.. Well the lead guitarist (Not the guy singing) is Larry LaLonde who plays for Primus and every other Les Claypool project..

  • wow can you say ahead of your time?

  • lol i feel bad for the lead guitarist when he realized his bassist was way better than him

  • Comment removed

  • sick...

  • wow les is really goofy but awesome

  • holy shit! I knew he was an awesome slap but Ive never new her was so damn fast with his finger tips too. he better make it into the hall of fame of bassist... and someone needs to get on making a hall of fame of bassists as well

  • hes in almost any reputable top ten list of best bassists...along with wooten, jaco, flea, trujillo, and others

  • sounds a bit like the solo on one of the live tracks on rhinoplasty at 0:35... but sped up

  • I've got the Blind Illusion CD, to me Les is the only stand out on it....everything else kinda sounds like a "local band" version of thrash.

  • So Larry Lalonde isn't a standout player?

I own The Sane Asylum and Les and Ler both played on it.

  • Ler isn't TOO bad, but for thrash, he was ok. Although I haven't heard his stuff with Possessed (I wanna say...) though. Now in Primus, Ler's awesome! I think he's a very original guitarist, and Ler and Les are a great team.

  • haha Immigrant song

  • what song is he playing at 1:23 ? it sounds so familier

  • It's just a cliché twelve-bar-blues riff

  • So is your face.

  • I wanna have Les Claypool's baby!!!!!!!!!!

  • 8:25 - HEEEYYYYYY!!!! lol still the Les we know and love

  • He played in Blind Illusion??? THAT'S SO FUCKING COOL!!!

  • and he tried out for Metallica after cliff died, they didn't choose him because he was TOO good, but of course his playing style didn't mesh with Meallica, to say the least. even if Les DId get the gig, he would be very constrained playing bass for Metallica.

  • Yeah, I knew about that. Metallica with Claypool would have been fucked up.

  • Yeah that wouldn't have worked, like Flea trying out for Maroon 5 or sum shyt...Les was way too complex for Metallica. they made the right choice with Jason Newsted, and Trujillo is the best since Cliff

  • Trujillo is also to good for metallica

  • Yeah Trujillo is a BEAST but at loeast he keeps Jaymz, Kirk and Larz on their toes instead of having some average white boy like Jason. I actually thought Jason was good, but as a thrash/metal bassist only...nobody can fill Cliff's shoes he was truly an original

  • No offense, but fuck cliff, i really dont see why people think hes that good of a bassist, anesthesia isnt that good of a bass solo, its mainly just one pattern.

the only thing about cliff is that hes like OH MY GAWD i can do 32nd notes! Steve DiGiorgio is a way better metal bassist.

  • they all have certain things they are really good at, to me they are all intense

  • @dioornodio Most people that like Metallica are redneck morons, so there you go. Mystery solved.

  • @dioornodio dude, no offence to you but show some fucking respect, at the time cliff was an amazing bass guitarist. Now that technology has changed, of course there are better than cliff, were talking about the 80's dude, it's now 2010. And if anesthesia is only one pattern who cares, it's still a kick ass song, along with orion.

Personally if people want to insult talented artists, go on stage and be better than them and make the money they make, until then stfu

  • @chefdude72 nah bro, Cliff is pretty much a shitty washed up guitarist who's one of the most overrated in history because he played sloppy pentatonic solos on a distorted electric bass.

  • @Steve128967 thank you

  • @dioornodio I disagree. Its a great solo. Who cares if its one pattern. Look at entersandman. The whole song is the same riff done diffrent ways.

  • trujillo is reallly good, but he seems abit out of place in metallica, i really liked jason, cause his was almost a grunge style, which i like, but its a matter of opinion, also i loved newsted's solos with chords ie, my friend of misery

  • amazing to see him so young and still a bass god... Primus sucks!!!!

  • 0:47 look how fast he plays, no other bassist can play as fast as Les

  • one of the best Thrash bands ever... got that album. Insain stuff

  • Very Primusy bass solo.

  • i dont think that any primus solo are as fast has this one, he shreded some part and they fcking blew me away

  • absolutely right, i've never seen him do anything like that before either

  • i like how he hasn't changed the bass he plays in forever

  • well he just has more that 1 bass now. hes also got 6 string basses and fretless 1s as well. even a 6 string fretless for that matter

  • i know this, I'm pointing out how he has been playing that bass for ever, that's his primary sheez.

  • greattttt

  • PRIMUS SUCKS! LERRY IS A BASTARD!

  • I JUST SHAT BRIX

  • what is he playing at 1:23 ?

  • well , it's like a classical rock riff but in Les's style XD

  • well, what is the name of the song

  • Some blues.

  • Heeey mom, it's howdy-doody time, blah!

  • MONSTER

  • it have sense but

    it dont have any feeling

    fuck you

  • holy shit.... i am actually in awe... i used to be that guy that blindly supported flea and would plus everything about him...les claypool is beast...but i will always love the chili peppers more than primus

  • Les's bass with light strings doesn't sound very good in a supportive role.

  • les SUPPORTING at all is weird. hes a frontman by nature. imagine if he had joined metallica.....

  • he auditioned to join Metallica, but they turned him down

  • James Hetfield said he was "too good". He wouldn't have fit with Metallica, but him and Kirk went to highschool together.

  • Les is kinda like Entwhistle, they both play lead styles and dont work with the band a whole lot

  • No man, Les just creates Primus' signature sound predominantly by himself, but he still definitely grooves with Herb, and in his other projects he is very groovy.

  • hmm, itd weird you think that les would have had Ler right away in Primus instead of Todd huth

  • my brother tries to claim that Flea is a better bassist than Les Claypool.

and this is why i call him a dirty little mug.

  • Wow. Your brother is a complete Tool.

  • he must be killed at once...

  • barely comparable. Both are great in their own way.

  • Flea is just good enough to be in a big band. He is good. NOT GREAT

  • dumb..
