  • I am not one who thinks Basquiat was (or is) a great artist, painter, or person. What I do consider is that his work is seminal, his deeds were incidental, and his life was esoteric. The footage shown here of his 'simple' bombings are far more mechanical than the scribblings of a junkie, more genuine than a hack, more to the adage that not everyone can be a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere....

  • have any of you guys ever thought hey this guy is just doin crappy pictures and so high off heroin that it looks like hes being creative when really hes just so damn high he doesnt even know what hes doing

  • @illerskiller Have you ever thought that maybe drugs bring even more creativity out of an already creative person? Janis Joplin, Jimmie Hendrix, Layne Staly, The Beatles etc etc etc.

  • I love this song (: and I love Basquiat..

In a documentary that was made about him there's this one song that keeps comming back, the lyrics go something like "The clock is pst midnight, .. books are flying through the hall.." or something like that. Would anyone happen to know what it's called? (:

  • ed harcourt - Bleed A River Deep

  • @parabrahma Do you know the name of that documentary?

  • People have to stop justifying the scribbles of this junkie, as notable artwork. Basquiat is a joke. "Amateurish", would be a compliment. It's the worst of the worst. It's juvenile. And it, generally, only appeals to the smallest minority of the populace, whom can relate to him racially and economically. God, his stuff was bad, and not only in the sense of opinions. He was a man who's only novelty came in emulating typical toddler art, one can find scattered on a refrigerator.

  • @zadeh79 He broke the boundaries of what is consistent and acceptable. That's what innovators do. But of course, what people are drawn to in terms of art is subjective, critics aside---even they can only offer opinions dressed in the language of academia. And that's what you're offering. It isn't objective truth: whatever that might be.

  • @bluebanshee3 A reasonable critique cannot be confined to subjective measures. His works are, quite objectively, incomparable to the productions of historical artists, because they completely lack any rendering skill, AND are devoid of any independent (novel) element(s). Any artist could have, and more importantly, has, produced similar works - and has tossed them away. Indeed, Basquiat was the most over-rated bum, the world has ever known.

  • @zadeh79 I'm sorry. That's just absurd.

  • @bluebanshee3 If that's absurd them I'm the best artist in the world.

  • @zadeh79 I have a feeling you're one of those people who thinks it's all about realism. It just isn't, and hasn't been (for the most part) for over a century. We have cameras for that. If you get a chance, you might want to look into expressionism and abstract expressionism. You could say Basquiat's work has a lot of roots in those traditions. It's meant to express an emotion (and to evoke one)---not to "look exactly like something."

And then--you could always stick to just wrestling.

  • @zadeh79 Reading your "about me" section makes me feel very sorry for you. Get a life
