What a great video... jam packed with information. A homeowner should study this video carefully and check out the problems individually. I have modified my house to eliminate several of these air flow problems. Thanks much and I learned several new things from watching.
Well done. Very informative. I just spent over $2,000 to install a hung ciling, complete with nine recessed lights. It looked great -- until the snow came. The blizzard of 2010. Now I have puddles in the ceiling tiles from a roof leak cause by an ice dam........I understand the idea of preventing warm air from the living space into the atic. but with my old house, that is not so easy.....To pick up on Yzarcful's comment, is there a way of installing heat cable so it will do the job????
@b5b9 Heat tape will be a waste of time and money down the drain. Everything comes with a price tag and many consumers only see the initial cost thats on the package. There are other price tags that are embedded within the products such as utility bills and more importantly the environment price tag. By removing the current ice damns off the roof will only make matters worse. Wait till the spring for nice warm weather. What will solve the problem here is to air seal and insulate the attic.
@ichhabegedroppen A cool video exist on YouTube where a person uses firearms to remove the ice dams. It cool---- you have to look for it-----not sure what name it is called.
Your Video was excellent explaining the process up to the point where you started to talk about the heat tape that you attach to the outside edge of your roof. Those products do not solve the problem they only add to it. You still get icicles with those products except they occur at every point where the wire comes down and forms a v along the gutter
Greetings from No. Virginia. We are just digging out from the Blizzard of 2010. Q: Ours is a solar-passive house, aka "envelope house," which is designed to allow warm air to pass thru the attic and recirculate between the double walls at the rear of the house. Our roof (cedar shingles) is steeply pitched & has 2 large banks of skylights on the front (SSW). No leaking so far. What if anything should we do about the large accumulation of snow/ice/icicles on the lower portion of the roof?
Hello. I'm assuming (from your moniker) that you are in the Cleveland area. We have had ice dams/icicles since we got the house in 1997. USA Insulation was here a few years ago, and put in more attic insluation (blown) and insulated the whole house with their method. We also had a new roof put in, with soffitt vents under the eaves and roof top vents. We STILL have the ice dams/icicles. Do u know of any contractors that can help us? There must be holes in the furnace room leading to attic
our house has ice dams from the dumb asses who put them up poorly before we moved in. And i climb up and brake the ice off lol. i never damage the roof so its all good
This is informative to say the least. Thank you!

@yzarcful I think I mention as a last resort. You are right, those products do not solve the problem.

what do you do if there is not access to your attic? Ours is an old house and was sealed up years before we bought it.
Juberoos 2 years ago
@Juberoos If possible, make one for observation. After, insulate and seal it.
