Actually, the Lorelei is a female being, sitting on the "Loreleifelsen" (The Rock of the Lorelei) on the Rhein, distracting sailors with her songs, so they crash into the rocks and die a painful death by drowning.

in my German class, my teacher would tell the story, she would lure sailors at night to their doom with her song, essentially making them unaware to anything but the song, hence "Deaf to all but the song"
