I believe 'Through the Gates of the Silver Key' was Lovecraft's final journey for Randolph Carter, for in the story Lovecraft more or less gives us the Ultimate Truth of his universe from the being beyond the Ultimate Gate who I believe was in fact Yog-Sothoth who is beyond time and space yet one with it, and Carter, achieving this state of siultaneousness as all facets of himself, becomes not unlike Yog-Sothoth. I believe the story is nothing less than Carter's ascendance to godhood.
H.P.Lovecraft himself adopted the stance of atheism early in his life. In 1932 he wrote in a letter to Robert E. Howard: "All I say is that I think it is damned unlikely that anything like a central cosmic will, a spirit world, or an eternal survival of personality exist [sic]. They are the most preposterous and unjustified of all the guesses which can be made about the universe, and I am not enough of a hair-splitter to pretend that I don't regard them as arrant and negligible moonshine.(wiki)
Fiction comes only with the unwilling to sell everything you own and take up the cross and walk with the holy spirit just like Jesus.Or choose another teaching if you like. You'll become spirit possessed by demons, angels aliens, that drag you around like a madman having hallucination, voices, speaking tongues until you find yourself rejected by friends/family hurt beyond belief with multiple personalities and schizophrenia (your new family/friends) So,what causes this and can you recover? I did
Its funny when you listen to drug induced visions and those who not do drugs but have the same levels of experiences. World of difference, and for us empaths, a feeling world of difference. One is clear and clean regardless of vision light or dark; the other, like murky poop in a glass of water all shook up.
@DeathShamans - In Xanadu did Kubla Khan a stately pleasure dome decree; And Sam was taking opium and getting stoned enough for three. (Then again I'm not an empath so who knows! Maybe we're both right.)
Interesting to hear you do Lovecraft. His language is gorgeous, and full of yearning for a life beyond this one. However, if compared with your Wallace Stevens readings it's possible to hear that Lovecraft does not have that gift for open-ended symbolism that makes every word full of half-heard meanings that Stevens does.
I have taken Lovecraft's text and arranged it in poetical form. But of course as you say, there is nothing like Stevens' amazing depth of suggestion. Lovecraft interests me for extra-literary reasons, mostly philosophical/mystical. Stevens is pure poet, absolute gold thru & thru :)
I hope you know Lovecraft's horror writing. It is extraordinary and has a distinctly Romantic spirit (in the original sense of that word) similar to these pieces you've presented.I've read it all and wish there was more to read!
Coming from the author of 'Moon's Landing Revisited' that makes me blush - with pleasure. Thanks Gray, you're a one-off. Yes Spinoza was a delight of my youth.

@rsouthern - Multiple personalities aren't the problem. People's ignorance/ fear attitudes toward them are. Bluejay

One would have thought Lovecraft was insired by Vedanta philosophy. Then again, it could have been Hoffman Price who brought the ideas in.

Yes I think I've read it all. His sonnets are pretty good too presenting the horror in verse form.

Lovecraft gives more imagery, sense appeal, especially hunger, as you suggest, yearning.

He sounds like he was not in a very happy mood when he made this. 8)

Ah, now this is bursting with geyser-like imagery. That coupled with its singular essence of form makes for a spell-binding read. One of your best!
I feel that if Spinoza wrote poetry it would read like that last stanza.

another masterpiece! How my mind has followed the path your voice made with silver key in my hand.

You are very kind, thank you. It's a path more people might travel. Let's hope we have plenty of company on the journey!
