I think the actual title of the song is the Warlock's Fife not Warlord's. Well that is how it is on the Celtic River cd. i'd assume warlord would make more sense since the fife is a battle instrument! lol
From one flute/fife player to the group...This is most definitely a flute...and a nicely played one at that! Back in the day, I would listen to guys like Ian Andersen and Tim Weisberg to learn how to hum a tone and play the same pitch on the flute. If you get a bit aggressive with your diaphragm and embouchure, you can "overdrive" the tones that start happening at around 1:18 in the track. They're strong effects...listen again at 3:00...Nicely done, but not over-done. Very tasteful playing!
Hehe :] I love fifes!! I've got two and I've been playing since I was in grade 4. Our school had a fife band but we were never taught anything remotely close to that. We were taught like, turn on the sun, the national anthem and stuff.
Sorry, no. Listen carefully, you can clearly hear undertones that are too low to be produced on a fife. This is probably just a silver flute played in the upper registers. Also, this is not even played in a "fife" style. At all. This is jazz. The only fife is in the title!
The only thing I know is the style the beatboxing flutists use is in this song. I love it and if there are more clips on youtube please post or send to me or something. xD If there is a term for this please let meh know!
Awesome! . . . or not, I used Google Images to find the pictures, had no idea, or forgot where they came from. If this is against any policy you have I will add information or take the video down.
A fife is a transverse instrument with a narrow bore, generally un-keyed, generally in wood, generally in the pitch of Bb (above a traditional flute) or higher. A military fife is nearly always played in the 2nd and 3rd registers, the 1st is usually weak and/or out of tune. C and D fifes tend to be used as folk instruments (indoors) and therefore play in the 1st and second register. The music is almost always written as if played in D.
Just like I thought, the sounds in the song don't seem to fit within a fifes range. A lot of lower sounds, there would have to be multiple fifes for this to maybe be possible. But I like the song and found no videos on youtube and added the pictures according to the title. I'm glad that some people of fife knowledge are taking their time to post info on this video.

They are great, but not something I strive too much in . . . if I had to pick one it would be the mainstream flute we see today though. :D

Gotta love the smaller wood wind instruments!

I think a fife is any flute that plays in the major scale.

Does that make a chromatic fife a flute? Or a flute played in the 2nd octave a piccolo? No. A fife is it's own instrument.

Sounds kool. Like jazz flute. With Donkey Kong and light rock.
