The real Captain America was frozen in ice in March of 1945, about a month before Germany surrendered. There were many imposters, and this was one of them.
I was glad the new movie was set totally in WWII, except for his rude awakening at the end.
Captain America seems to be more in line with being a pre-Daredevil with him being a DA and not the super soilder of the comics in this feature, even his name was changed from Steve Rogers to Grant Garener
although i do like this earily Captain America along with both 70s tv movies with Rob Brown
the only Cap film i dislike is of course the dumb 1990 feature film but new movie with Chris Evens and Hugo Weaving should really be awsome
Thanks for the reply. You're right. I should have been more clear. I was wondering if any of the other Invaders had been serialized (specifically Namor). They all started in Timely Comics which eventually became Marvel.
@claymsn At the time this film was made, Marvel was still known as Timely Comics and Captain America was practically the only well known superhero they had at the time. The Marvel we know today didn't form until Fantastic Four # 1 was released about 20 years after this film was made.
BTW, this Cap is somewhat referenced today with Bucky Cap having a gun similar to this movie Cap.
They cut the bit where the goon who punched cap over the table went on to smash a chair across his back, which knocked him out. i remember seeing this serial as a kid, i think the police arrived just in time to save him.
Sorry but this is how superhero movies should be. I remember when Batman had a gun in the comics and said stuff like "Tell me or I'll kill you" I want a hero that doesn't dick around!
In 1879 there was a woman named Jillian who was walking down a creek one day and little did she know, there was a homicidle maniac following her. When she heard a noise behind her,the man grabbed her and knocked her out. When she woke she was in up in a dark factory and the man was there. After a few moments, she was raped and then the man slit her throat. Now that you have read this, every night, she will be standing outside your door looking in ure window post dis on 7 different videos to stop her
Too bad they couldn't have kept star Dick Purcell off the pork chops! The costume tight was pretty unforgiving. Original cowl and tunic still survives in Bob Burns' basement museum.
Check out our retro sci-fi serial, "Thirty Second Doom".
You think his gunplay is bad? You ought to see the Captain Marvel serial. He mows down badguys with a mounted machine gun! Also, the real Captain America couldn't get knocked over the table by an everyday goon. Super soldier serum, right? Of course, right!
Now that's a Cliffhangger movie if i saw one, inc'l "Spy Smasher","Jungle Woman"(Phylis Coats:1st[Lois Lane]w/George Reeves SUPERMAN,Buster Crabbe:"Flash Gordan"&"Buck Rodgers","Commando Cody" also Japanese series "The Phanthom Agents" on Ch.(11)WPIX,NYC.1963-1970...that I can remember!
Yeah, like the 1940s Batman serials, this one was a dog by today's standards.
However, if you like old time serials, or are just curious about how Captain America was interpreted on the big screen back then, it can be fun to watch.
He actually wasn't supposed to knock on the door holding a gun. He was supposed to enter through the window with his shield. No I'm kidding. Interesting version.
Funny with all the liberal hollier than thou wussies that society have turned to now people would say OMG Cap has a gun, guns are evil. Well this movie was done by filmakers of the "great generation" and they were not afraid to have a kickass guy defending himself with a gun. Those guys knew better.
Cap is a killing machine in this! Surely a normal human would get knocked the fuck out by a punch from Cap's Super-Soldier serum enhanced fist?....oh, fuck I sound like a geek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i wonder when hs movie coming out i hot it dont look like bull shit like most of them but spider man shit i hot iron man look like some thing and the new hulk movie
I love the way this Captain America looks. This movie was filmed during WWII, when all the young, in-shape guys were off fighting, so instead we get Dick Purcell... or, as I call him, "Captain Dad."
this was a cool and damn hard to find serial...i doubt we'll see this one on dvd. hell marvel has'nt allowed the 2 tv movies or the 1992 direct to video film to be re-released yet.
Well, if you go by the classic story, the REAL Captain america was on ice at the time. This Cap was probably a fill in until the real Steve Rogers was found and thawed.
Well this is different (in a cool way). He's kinda like the Phantom in a more colourful jumpsuit. Captain America, gone but not forgotten. (and if my info is correct, he'll be back!!)
I like the whole black contume, motorcycle and gun concept behind Captain America as portayed here in this primitive version. It's different , but realistic. His colorful costume and shield wouldn't work too well in a movie.
I take it by the comments that yall know nothing about the history of Cap America. Everything was differnt back then. Cap's sheild was shaped like a knights crest. The first issue of batman, back in teh 30's he had a gun but due to the comics code, Bob Kane was told to get rid of the gun. To say this sucked is basicaly saying your grandparents sucked, they could maybe were into cap before you even born so show respect dammit.
Actually, Batman got rid of the guns right about the time Robin came into being, well BEFORE the Comics Code. Bill Finger and Jerry Robinson took out the guns due to DC's insistence, I believe.
Everything else you say, though, I agree with 100%! :)
Actually by the second issue of Captain America he'd switched to the tried and true round shield. The pointed shield only ever appeared in Captain America no 1. What's funny about the serial is that even though he has no wings on his mask IN the serial Movie Posters show the costume with the wings depicted.
Its not too bad for a 1940's Republic Serial Film. Other than his use of a gun and no shield, it was alright considering the limitations of the times.
Not long after he played Captain America, Dick Purcell died of a heart attack at the Hollywood Athletic Club - it was a sad end to a career that could have gone much further.
