She turned in a star-making performance, and, considering all the movies I've seen, that's pretty rare. She has an incredible presence on the screen; I haven't seen anyone this talented since Natalie Wood. Whoever decided to cast her in this film is a genius!
When I start to wonder if there will EVER be another good movie made...I watch this again. There isn't a single second of this that doesn't either make me laugh out loud or just sit in awe of the talents that are Michelle Pfeiffer, Jeff Bridges and Beau Bridges.
This sequence just shows how hard it is to be a good singer! AND the delusions some have about how "good" they are! Contrast Jennifer Tilly's performance here to hers in in "Liar, Liar," many years later.
Why can't they make movies like this anymore?! Michells and Jeff both deserved Best Actor/Actress Oscars, and Beau deserved the Supporting Actor. Terrific script, music score and direction! The best kind of American cinema.
I've *LIVED* this experience! I had a big band back during the 90's swing scene in the San Francisco area. We needed a female vocalist and so I advertised. Sent out about 8 song packets and scheduled them to come to the piano players house. Each one was worse than the previous one. Bad intonation, time, phrasing. The last gal was operatic (just like the movie)! The only way you'd get them to swing was to hang 'em from a tree. Totally surreal...
See her in "Married To The Mob." "I wanna div-oooo-ahhs!"

The auditions montage is one of the funniest scenes in any movie. And in fact, the whole movie is utter perfection.
