So, what? Why does it have to sound like the rest of the songs on the album? Had the album version never been released (and this one been used instead), you would LOVE this song on its own merit. Both versions have their place. Sure, everyone is in love with their slower songs (e.g., New Slang). But, what hooked me on The Shins was all of their upbeat songs. There aren't very many contemporary bands that come to mind who are so consistent with producing great upbeat songs.
I think this one would have been a better choice. The album sort of relaxes all the way until the end, this would have livened it up. But it's still one of favorite albums.
this actually *is* the original version of the song. though it wasn't released til after WTNA came out, it was recorded just after "Chutes To Narrow" was recorded, but the guys didn't like how it turned out. new producer = new version for WTNA, and a much better song it became. the melody has room to move in the album version, whereas this version chokes it out
Well, I really liked the "sound" of Chutes to Narrow, and I guess that's why I like this one so much. I liked WTNA, but I'm just not used to their new sound. I like this version of Spilt Needles better even though the WTNA version is really good.
iTunes has it. just search the shins and click that right arrow that shows up next the artist's name. or click the artist's name next the featured albums in the middle of the window.
I'm actually a big fan of their faster stuff (e.g., "Australia"), I guess, because they don't have a lot of really fast stuff. I know they do shine when it comes to slower tempo songs. But I really don't compare this song to the original because they are quite different. I like them both for what they're worth.
I agree. This is one of my favorite shins songs, but part of the appeal in the original is the slower and the bizarre sounding instrumentals. This remix gives it a less unique feel with the quick and unsynthesized instruments. That's just my take.
I agree, but I can't completely think to discard this song, though the original does seem very much better. His voice compliments how the song is sung, definitely, in both versions, though the slow is very much more appealing to me too.
The off topic discussion started to get way too rude and obnoxious for my tastes. Therefore, I removed the entire discussion. If there are any further rude comments, then they'll be removed, too.
Folks, keep in mind that the entire band and their degree of talent shouldn't be judged based upon Marty's poor judgement and lack of self-control. Hopefully, we all learn to Forgive. And hopefully, we are all able to learn from our poor choices, too.
Wow, that was awesome, a nice change to one of my favorite songs. I walk around humming this so much, I'm sure that at some point I did it this way without even thinking about it.
I know, some feel the lyrics are a bit lofty and contrived with the blind man's bike handlebars, but it says exactly how I feel about life, most of the time.
I love when multiple versions of a song are released. That way I can enjoy them all.

The album version is a LOT better than this. This one completely takes away the ambient and ethereal feel of the album version.

If I came up with riff from the album version I would have changed this song too.

eh I prefer the album version- it's more dark and kind of melancholy. This one is too energetic (its still good stuff though!)

reminds me of the smiths.

This sounds far more like Chutes than Wincing.. its origins make sense, then.

Woah.... this doesn't suit the lyrics at all. I'm glad they redid it with the slow, better version.

Horses for courses! Although I love the original, I feel this version resolves the lingering problems I always had with the verse after the break.
