@mxzyspitlik They used to marry each other before slavery? How so? Black people's 1st foray into America was through the slave trade. There weren't many free blacks who migrated to America on their own will before the 1900's.
People that have nothing, or very little, tend to look for something to own, or control.
This is why prisoners go on hunger strike, it's all they have left to control.
Humans from cave men have always copied the success of others, This is why people copy people on TV, it's the Caveman in us reacting. It's a Ghost Ship.
Therefore we Copy because it gives us better odds to survive and we seek to gain control of what ever our ability will allow.
@thewingflyer You're telling the tale of virtually all people besides the "elite". This has been and is happening worldwide whether it's Indian vs Indian in their caste system (as an example), Chinese vs Chinese, Indigenous North American tribes vs Indigenous...., Caucasian vs Caucasian (Great Britain's tribes oppressing and committing genocide on the Irish and Scottish), and even here in the USA, the "white" slaves which is where the term "Redneck" actually comes from.
yup sounds like thomas is used his harvard education to earn lots of money and respect from rush limbaugh by teaching white america why blacks talk they way they do...im sure that this was much needed
This book was truly fascinating. The essay that deals with black/white "redneck" culture is only about 75-80 pages if memory serves correctly. An excellent primer for the origins of an ancient and self-destructive culture that has spanned centuries among different races on different continents. Pick it up at the library if you can. You'll be thankful.
What are the logical reasons for Japanese people sticking squids up their butts? What are the logical reasons for Muslims blowing themselves up for virgins? What are the logical reasons for Norwegian Neocons to go on a killing spree? What are the logical reasons for you asking such a simplistic and insipid thing? But one of many questions The00deadzone, but one of many questions...
@JoKo203 Thanks. It's good to see someone actually knows that they're talking about rather than talking from their buttocks. "Black English" is indeed just a slight shading of poor southern white speech. A short visit there will make this obvious. I recommend Mississippi/Alabama/Louisiana, the heart of the south.
@TheWingflyer RIght, I don't understand why there are still people who can't recognize this simple fact. Blacks obviously received much of their cultural, as well as linguistic tradition from the Scots-Irish and other settlers from various parts of the U.K. When you have two peoples, blacks and Scots-Irish, English descent living together, or as a friend of mine from Virginia says “joined at the hip for 400 years.” There’s little reason to believe that cultural diffusion wouldn’t take place.
@JoKo203 Exactly. To take it further, consider that black people (then slaves) were forced through violence, abuse, and muzzling not to use their own languages and instead to speak English. They were also barred from any practices of African cultural traditions. American black people literally have no cultural leg to stand on of their own. Worse is that they're stuck with the very culture that holds them in the greatest contempt, hence they can't even see the good in themselves!
My dad is from the south and he is black, he came from a very poor family but he doesn't sound like that, but sometimes when he gets angry his country twain and some words like aint come out...but there are far too many kids from the suburbs trying to sound like something they weren't even raised with, my brother is one of them, and it annoys me to no end, because while there are those who talk like that there are many more who just act like that's how they were raised, take drake for example
@browneyes04047 The artist Moby had an interesting piece about this a while back. It's not only with non-Southern suburban kids, this can be witnessed in other areas. Upper class English kids talking with a Cockney accent to sound "cool." There are other examples, whereas accents used to denote where one was from, they have transformed into a sort of status symbol.
Dr. Sowell's book was unbelievably enlightening. I only got the audio version, so I did not see all of his sources. I will probably buy the book, partly to get this listing, which I think would be fascinating.
@NatTurnerIsAlive Could you please refer me to some evidence that black people were forbidden to speak proper English? That's the first I've heard of it and am curious. Also, blaming all the problems of black people on whites is a little silly. I would recommend actually reading Sowell's book.
It's not youtube commenter's responsibility to teach you basic American history, i would recommend reading something other than Sowell's book (and Sowell is fine by me, I agree with him on some things but not on others).
The issues many Blacks face are not the fault of "whites" but the fault of a racially discriminatory power structure that compromised Black education and identity for 400 years. Suggesting that this history has no bearing on the last 40 years is silly.
1. If someone here has a citation for evidence that blacks were forbidden to speak proper English I'd like to see it. You do or you don't.
2. Slavery/Jim Crow had many negative effects. The long term destruction of the black family was not one of them. Blacks forty years ago were less likely to have out of wedlock babies than whites. Their crime rate was much lower than modern blacks crime rates. Those problems cannot be blamed on slavery.
@darwinkilledgod i grew up in foster homes, lived with over 200 people, baout 45% were african american. If you spoke proper english you were made fun of. Everyone adapted to speaking stupid.
@archaenadek I believe you. Someone earlier had said that it was made illegal in the south for blacks to speak properly. I didn't belive him. I still don't.
On comparing these stats you make the exact same error that Sowell makes which leads me to believe that he is pretty much your sole source of information on this. What is significant is the Black crime rate relative to Whites 40 years ago, not relative to Blacks in the present, where crime rates in general are much higher.
Also your stats on out of wedlock births are just wrong. I can even give you a Conservative source (Brookings) that contradicts it.
