I'm new at woodturning, watching tons of videos on the topic, and what this gentleman said about the rotation being a matter of Feet Per Minute as opposed to Revolutions Per Minute is something I've been thinking but haven't heard anyone say. Makes sense. If you exaggerate the idea and have a 100 inch wide piece of stock turning as low as 1 (one) RPM, the exterior of that stock is moving past the cutting edge at a rate of 26.179 FPM, or 5.236 inches per second! Plenty fast for first cuts.
