arent medicare and medicaid failing? the question we should be asking is if our problems are caused by too much or to little government involvement. If we look closely it is obviously too much. Medicare and medicaid already pay for 55% of our medical bills in this country. increasing the volume of these programs will not suddenly fix them. Besides 2/3 of the people who dont have healthcare can afford it or qualify for medicare but just havent applied.

This health care bill being considered should not even be an issue. The fact that we live in a representative republic means that those elected represent the american people. If those in washington were doing this, this bill would fail miserably. The fact that many of the blue dog democrats changed their opinion on the bill after meeting with administration leaders shows how much pressure is being placed on them. First, we are functioning from diff. world views. I think that if people are left to be free, they will give *more* charity, *more* inventiveness, etc. & nix like Africa. Their problems have been mostly not its people, but their governments overall. The US has kicked butt for a reason these last 200 years.

gwenshin, You are sadly mistaken. The endgame to this program IS a single payer plan. Although this program doesn't spell out the single payer plan, the provisions make it impossible to keep your current coverage. Any changes will force you into the "exchange".
You are wrong, have you read HR 3200 or have you heard speeches Obama made in where he wants a single payer plan, but it might take a while to phase out the employer plan, like a decade, 15 or 20 years. Also Congress will still have their own health insurance plan, they won't have the one they want to shove down our throats.
Personally I don't see why there should be for-profit ins in the US. Ins companies don't want to insure old people or those with a "preexisting condition." In other words, people who NEEDS insurance is priced out which drives it up for the rest of us. Try getting ins. if you have diabetes or are a cancer survivor. As a counter, I wonder about how medicare in partnership w/ insurance companies has effected the overall system badly. I mean, in every other area gov taking over charity has made things worse. eg..

Fannie and Fred are gov sponsored, and offered banks a chance to give irresponsible loans by promising to cover the cost if they're not paid back.
2. Gov schools have only gotten worse ever since the teacher's unions took over. Proof is near every policy maker FOR gov schooling sends their kids to private.
3. Its proven that charity decreases the more gov takes that over. The less love in the help = less actual help.
I've lived in L.A. all my middle aged life and I can honestly say I've never known an Aussie or Canadian to come here for an operation, TO THE CONTRARY. My Canadian friends who work here (in film industry) although they have great union ins. schedule vacations to have procedures done free at home. They can't believe the cost, even with good ins. But there are fewer and fewer Union jobs and jobs with good perks. I don't think having 50 million uninsured Americans is OK.

I live in oz, and here isn't as bad as England or Canada; but an old person would have to wait 3 months to 9 months for hip surgery or an MRI. My parents in-law went to the States for heart tests. I grew up in Chicago, am American, and moved to Australia about 8 years ago. The public system here is great, in ways, or for the little stuff. (we hardly paid a cent to have a child! Or when I broke my wrist 3x visits and casting, etc. all for free! I was amazed.) Yet people, mostly older folks, complain here all the time about the system. The problem is with bigger procedures, and long waits, etc. That's why Canadians come to US for serious stuff.

arent medicare and medicaid failing? the question we should be asking is if our problems are caused by too much or to little government involvement. If we look closely it is obviously too much. Medicare and medicaid already pay for 55% of our medical bills in this country. increasing the volume of these programs will not suddenly fix them. Besides 2/3 of the people who dont have healthcare can afford it or qualify for medicare but just havent applied.

I think the core issue of contention is faith in the potential of an free individual, compared to the impulse of the left to take care of people they *presume* will not be able to take care of themselves/each other.
This faith is key, as it takes a letting go of power. Individuals in gov., letting go of power, is the core of American individualism; as they surprise, every time. Medicare or gov involvement has caused most harm.

Liberals want Single Payer (and we are a growing group). But... rather than shoving that at America (like Bush did with his BS), Obama instead wants this compromising Public Option. His speech on Single Payer clearly stated "I will not seek a single payer system. Why start from scratch?" But you didn't listen to that did you?

gwenshin, You are sadly mistaken. The endgame to this program IS a single payer plan. Although this program doesn't spell out the single payer plan, the provisions make it impossible to keep your current coverage. Any changes will force you into the "exchange".

Also Congress will still have their own health insurance plan, they won't have the one they want to shove down our throats.

Personally I don't see why there should be for-profit ins in the US. Ins companies don't want to insure old people or those with a "preexisting condition." In other words, people who NEEDS insurance is priced out which drives it up for the rest of us. Try getting ins. if you have diabetes or are a cancer survivor. And these old coots can just rip up their medicare cards if they hate the government so badly. GOP "values" = me, me mine

You make a powerful point about preexisting conditions, I mean, like you said, when a person needs it the most they can't get in insurance to pay for incredible costs of serious conditions.

I've lived in L.A. all my middle aged life and I can honestly say I've never known an Aussie or Canadian to come here for an operation, TO THE CONTRARY. My Canadian friends who work here (in film industry) although they have great union ins. schedule vacations to have procedures done free at home. They can't believe the cost, even with good ins. But there are fewer and fewer Union jobs and jobs with good perks. I don't think having 50 million uninsured Americans is OK.

I am a small business owner and presently pay 70% of my employees health care. Most of them are also against health care reform, or so they tell me. Great....now I know where they stand. Next year when I get hit with yet another 15% increase from United Healthcare, I am gonna pass every dime along to them.

We have the highest infant mortality in the 1st world, the second worst critical care wait times, are roughly 27th in terms of quality, 32nd in surgical mistakes, every 1st world socialized medicine nation beats us for life expectency, and the final kicker? - we pay 2 to 4 times as much as every other Country in the 1st world for this miserable failure of a system.

I grew up in Chicago, am American, and moved to Australia about 8 years ago. The public system here is great, in ways, or for the little stuff. (we hardly paid a cent to have a child! Or when I broke my wrist 3x visits and casting, etc. all for free! I was amazed.) Yet people, mostly older folks, complain here all the time about the system. The problem is with bigger procedures, and long waits, etc. That's why Canadians come to US for serious stuff.

GLENN: Once we lose hope, then it is over. So we can't lose hope. And what I base my hope is in the founding of the country. These documents changed the world. So the documents will survive in the end. We may have to go through hell and back, but in the end the documents will survive and the people will survive and I don't know what America looks like at the end of the road, but we will survive and we will rebuild because that's what we do.
