hey guys, im in a godspell play, comeing out soon and im jesus. thank you for posting this on youtube, it helped me learn the songs. do you have any comments for me
@jdowg2011 Yeah. I'm about to be in a production of this, and our version has a very very strong electric guitar. It really makes the mood much more powerful. This is well done, but the instrumentals are mediocre.
@harrypotterwicked thank you so much, this was such an incredible experience for all of us involved. a lot of the show came out of little games and excercises we would do as a cast, so you're right, we really made it our own, which is so crucial for this show. best of luck with your performance, would love to see any videos you post!
At my school play, they had the "tomb" be at the back of the gym in the sound room and after they finish singing the "Dear God your dead" song. We here they loudest crash ever and bright lights come on and "Jesus" comes down the isle singing "prepare ye they way of the Lord" so they did their own resurection which was awsome!
your performance was very very very good. :) you have a great voice and i LOVE the way you guys taged this. it's about like the production i am in right now. oh and i love the roses as well.
oh my god. I have to say that this is one of the best finales i've ever seen. You give so much emotion into what you're doing, this made me tear up... a lot. fantastic job!
i thought the rose petals were nice..i felt like the jesus felt no emotion about being crusified or even leaving these ppl and the crying seemed very fake
Wow!!! Great Performance! Our scool performed Godspell this semester (Spring of '09) and I played Jesus! Wonderful job! Our version was much different as far as movement and emotions and stuff! But I like how you guys did this! It was great! Jesus, you rock! lol!
you were amazing. but i feel like the rest of the cast should have been showing more emotion when you were dying on the cross. i heard them crying off to the side, however i feel like they should have been howling and screaming in torment when they see their Lord dying. and i agree with tylerrestrick in that there should have been a more clear cut resurrection. but you dont have to worry about that because thats the directors decision. YOU WERE AMAZING!
i would just like to point out that it wasent the directors decision it was the play writes it states it at the end of the play that its not about whether jesus himself was resurrected or not the play is about the formation of a community which carries on jesus' teachings after he has gone. its noted at the end of the script
right. but the director still could have had a clear cut resurrection. the director doesnt have to follow exactly what the script says. that was his/her decision to follow it big boy. i personally dont think that he/she shouldve. BAM.
I do have to say being in this play at the moment, and going through this discussion many times. We also didn't have a "clear-cut" resurrection, just Jesus coming out for his bows at the very end wearing a different shirt. I was against the resurrection for the same reason in the script. If the story was about Jesus, it would have had one at the end, and it also would have Judas going off and hanging himself instead of him being accepted back in the community....
Also, remember Judas was just John the Baptist in Godspell. John was assisting Jesus in the message. So, after the message was given, Judas becomes John again and he is the original leader of the community. My production is the same as this, except we carry Jesus around while she is dead and sing Long Live God-Day By Day- and Prepare Ye- at the end.
You're right - screw what Tebelak intended and do whatever you want because that's what you personally think that he/she should have done. Why even bother paying royalty fees through MTI? If you're not interested in what the author intended with with his work, why not write an original musical and just call it The Resurrection?
This is amazing, but I think the chain link fence is such an effective and intense way to enhance this scene. For our production, anyways. But to each his once. Again, AMAZING job, I hope my school's production turns out this good. :]
@mikus5 You are correct. "The Empty Tomb" is considered by scholars as the earliest true understanding of Easter (from Mark's gospel). Godspell--a Broadway adaptation of the gospel--did an appropriate adaptation (the empty cross) of that biblical account. For more to the story, churches are open every Sunday.
@tylerrestrick I've always thought the presence of a resurrection (at least a literal one) contradicts the entire point of Godspell. Godspell, for me, is not about Jesus at all, but about his followers--its not about how Jesus died and was reborn, but about how he affected the people who called themselves his disciples. The company singing "Long live god" at the end symbolizes that though Jesus may be dead, his message will live on through the lives he touched with his teachings.
@tylerrestrick The point of the play was about how Jesus formed a community of people who carried on his teachings after he was gone... But some choose to view the curtain call at the end of the show a resurrection.
You are without a doubt amazing... such talent. Ive heard about the show a thousand times over and have never seen it until after I ran across this video... Ive found other verisons of the Finale, but I love how this one is done... rather than on a chain link fence, etc. and the purple cloth adds!... I almost cried... Beautiful!
I think this show can be done very well or very poorly, I've seen examples of both, and I have to credit our director a lot with making this such an incredible show. As for the chain link fence, that was something she was adamant about not repeating, since it's always done that way!
@mikus5 Very, very good performance. Were doing Godspell at my school and instead of the fence were using scaffolding.....because scaffolding is amazing.
Do you have video of the rest of this show? I am so disappointed that I didn't go see this live, but this is a really high quality recording and the three clips you have here are really phenomenal. Or tell me Calvin's bookstore has DVDs of it, or something...
When most children get grounded they are told they cannot use cell phones, but I don't have a cell phone so I was told I could not watch musicals.
I am not grounded anymore, and I will go to sleep singing this song.
Party at my place!
