This music makes me feel good about guitar as an instrument. I feel like I've kind of run into a wall as far as writing on guitar goes, but this reminds me there's a lot I haven't really tried playing yet : )
I could have sworn that I read an interview that it was a broken Maestro Brassmaster or some such thing that just happened to make that wailing chirping sound, not necessarily by design. Someone correct me if you have better information.
Ries faces the amp with his guitar to make it feedback. He then turns on an echo pedal (with his hand) and manipulates the speed of the feedback. You can see him move his hand from the guitar to the top of the amp. Try it and see!
it's funny, around here in San Diego, north county especially, everyone knows who they are and loves them very much, probably more so when they were together too. on any given day you can walk into Lou's Records and chat with whoever's behind the counter about DLJ for hours, they sell shirts and everything. all these people talking about them not being known very well makes sense to me though, I am actually pleasantly surprised to see they have ANY fans outside of my area. they need a reunion!
i did catch hot snakes live in paris,fr,but i never saw jehu live...this cant make up for it,of course, but its great to be able to see how it was a bit...many thanks !
Drive Like Jehu was the band to see if you really wanted to see John Reis's guitar playing ability. RFTC was a cool party type band, but Jehu was more sreious business!
I wasn't really saying a lot of personal praise, but they get a lot of critical praise and are also acknowledged as being incredibly influential on post-hardcore music. Ever heard of At the Drive-In? They borrow a lot from Drive Like Jehu. I am also one of the only people I know who likes them, so I can see where you are coming from.
That wasn't really the point of the statement, it was just to show how influential Drive Like Jehu is. They get/got a lot of critical praise. I think a better description would be under listened.

I belive it's holding a tube amp above the microphones. I haven't done it myself but that's what i've heard.
