@000majorwinters000 Ah yeah. Well that's okay anyhow. :D I think we've all done it for fun any how lol.
This one mod I got, the Macedonians have like 3 full stacks of barbarians that will invade right away... I had to make a pike box for that lol. I got a heroic victory too. Extended Greek Mod in case you wanna try it. (XGM) It's pretty good but it lags my computer. It makes the map huge. O_O
by using this noobic circle i hate it when players think they have the best strategy found it means they have no balls and rather like to sit and wait instead of showing what they got and i think it was not even a online battle but a custum battle
It is one sided because the other side had no effective tactic against the phalanx.
It is always a feeble attempt to battle when the commanders have no idea of how they intend to win in the first place. At best, a gamble. At worse, a desperation
True, and this video was not meant to be interpreted as a fair battle. If it should have been, then I've bot made a very good video, then! A fair opinion many seem to share about my small collection.
I see your point, and if this battle were real, I would give the germans much credit, or question them altogether, for choosing to fight such a formation in the first place.
Yea, i used a tactic like this in a battle against the Roman. I played as Carthagian - there was so 500 elite Carthaginians units again two Roman armies. I maked a position like this - phalanx, i am sure a tactic like this. I won that battle. :)
You do it manually, which isn't too difficult. The phalanx as it is naturally is more of a line formation, I just configured it into the circle you see.
By turtle, you don't mean the testudo, right? You mean different phalanx formations... as in putting them in a square as opposed to what I've shown here?
No, the reason I chose this formation is because a perfect square of any sort would leave the flanks of the hoplites exposed.
And no, it isn't like using longer range weapons vs swords. Phalanxes are easily, and readily (when fighting romans) flanked. That's how they were defeated. ^^ By faster moving and more adaptable Romans.
Squares do work. Hell, even 3 sided squares (square without the 3rd side) work IF you have one unit moving to protect the flanks. It's a bit hard to manage at times, but my lines almost never get broken this way. I hate elephants.
The turtle formation is what you did, you made a large shell where only two flanks are 'exposed'. (hardly) Look to your right at :34.
And yes it is like ranged weapons verse swords. The germans got nowhere near your Spartans when the AI charged your phalanx head on.
You said squares work, I didn't deny that. I simply stated I'd rather not use a square because of, as you say here, you'd need supporting units. In an all-hoplite army, I'd have to use a self-preserving formation of sorts. (;
In fact, you were right about that. Somewhat. The phalanx has it's weaknesses, is what I'm saying. All formations do in some way. Ranged weapons versus swords isn't quite what this is like, because a true phalanx isn't even guaranteed to last in a frontal assault.
Frontal assault? *nightmares about a campaign battle involving a bridge and Greeks*
The Square formation has it's downfalls (one unit routs, everything falls apart real quick, requires constant attention to the middle unit) As does the turtle formation. The phalanx seems to "follow" the unit it's fighting. Exposes sides...poop.
Then theres the archers...
Wow, if you think about it, the phalanx isn't all that useful without any supporting troops :o (and I'm not talking just multiple phalanxes)
lol! It's true, you can't really control the phalanx all that much when it's engaged already. Sometimes they don't move at all, and other times they're slowly shifting their position around their enemies.
( ; My point was that even a phalanx would eventually crumble if fought from the front for a long enough period of time. At least realistically, such long spears would begin to break.
True, without support it's a but of an odd formation. Sort of like a tank without infantry support.
I don't see a reason not to. And I do wonder what you mean by "you guys", because I do believe I stand alone in terms of the games I play and the frequency in which I post these videos. Which isn't very often.
To answer the question though, yes I shall continue to play it, as my PC is only capable of so much, and it's rather enjoyable.
Hmm, Spartans against German infantry?:D lol and they are even without cavalary... Also u could won just placing ur phalanxes in one line and covering the sides..
I would have been flanked, I think. Then I'd have phalanxes splitting up and running around the field to intercept the considerably more fierce germans. I wanted to "turtle" this match out in the beginning. They had a lot of shock troops, and I was, well... to be blunt, I was camping, as the vid. description says, demonstrating the defensive as well as offensive capabilities of the phalanx.
I think it's a matter of proper governing. The more settlements you get, the more income. But... the larger the military cost, the more money is spent for upkeep. Make sure to disband older military units when they are upgraded, for example, disbanding all hastati units once you're allowed to create the "early legionary cohorts". Lots of governing... for me, it gets harder the more I expand. Still, the battles are fun. *shrugs*
You can disband your troops only on the campaign map. I believe you right click on the specific unit, whether it's in a garrison or in an army, and you'll see the unit details. From there you should be able to highlight the disband button. Tell me if you're having trouble.
Early "germans" and "celts" were suspected to have used a shield wall with spears to advance the main battle line of heavy infantry while employing shock troops to screen the advance.
Not quite the same as a phalanx but quite similar in many respects)
Oh, okay then. It makes sense anyway. Even "barbarians", as they were so called by the romans and greeks (I'm pretty sure), could see the usefulness in having spearmen in the front lines.
Get own !!

Dude, you could have fought a lot more men. The pike box is effective for sure, but should only be used in desperation. : /

@Jmlatmr87 Yeah, I definitely could have. I was still pretty new to Total war when I made this video actually. It is overkill. xD

kinda funny, all you need to do to get past a phalax is set your infantry to open formation

It's definitely a deterrent to one. But then your troops have to hold out against the spearwall before they reach the shield.s

Playing using the greeks is almost like playing empire total war :P Longer range weapons against simple swords and shields lol.
Anyway, have you ever thought of using a box formation instead of a "turtle" one? Quite effective in my opinion.

a spartan vs german phalanx spartans would decimate them. the germans shouldn't even kno phalanx anyway. Milita hoplites vs german would seem fair

This is true. ^^ I was wondering how a cluster of barbarian warriors would feel like standing in a phalanx. Something just doesn't click there.
