May I ask what 1950's nostalgia Fallout 3 has? This confuses me, perhaps I was thinking more of New Vegas. Nevertheless, an explanation would be appreciated.
The seed of "wasteland love" was planted before the console generation with the Wasteland, FO1, and FO2. FO3 was derived from that, not Bioshock. You can't ignore the genesis of it simply because it's inconvenient that it didn''t appear on consoles. The ideas were in place before consoles ever hit the scene.
well evan i think that is realistic... skyrim came out the end of 2011, so its totally doable we will see fallout 4 @ the end of 2013.... bethseda's trends seems to be down to 3 year development times, since they gotta be using the same engine as skyrim, and they must have finished skyrim last summer, and jumped right on fallout, i'm expecting a trailer for it by the end of this year... i could be wrong but my crystal ball said so...so it gotta be... ;)
there is a trailer supposedly released by someone inside bethesda and it has a sign saying "welcome to san francisco" and the golden gate bridge in the background
i hope there will be a fallout 4 (or perhaps named something else). Fallout 3 was by far one of the best games I've played. New Vegas was excelent in gameplay aswell, but it was missing that good story and plot that fallout 3 had. That's why i have mixed feelings about New Vegas. I'm hoping for a new one that is great in gameplay AND plot. Idk if it's possible to beat Fallout 3, but it would be nice to see. Plus i felt that the DLCs for 3 were better. New Vegas needed a "broken steel" addition.
@Russianwolverin *facepalm* okay 1. Fallout 3 is NOT the only game successful in imementing the wasteland. ALL of these games did a good job of imementing the wasteland. 2. There is no Fallout San Francisco. The trailer was fake. Although, Bethesda may or may not be making the next Fallout as Todd Howard announced in 2010 that they were working on 2 games and one game was farther in development (This game was revealed to be Skyrim.)
I'm a loyal Bethesda fan and fallout 3 is my no.1 game of all time. Hopefully Bethesda will do what they did last year with skyrim and release a trailer for fallout 4 this month or next and the game will be in my console by Christmas, preferably with an updated game engine!
@Linkthe1st Rage may have done poorly compared to the other four's success, but i do think that it didnt do enough to kill the wasteland. Like you said it hurt the wasteland trend but borderlands 2 has been announced and many people are looking forward to it. And also many of the fans of the new fallout games have already started preparing so that's another group of fans. The thing i saw many people complain about Rage was that the ending wasnt good but it is a good link to a sequel
@Linkthe1st i have walked the wasteland for countless hours of gameplay years of playing fallout and have grown to love know and respect the harshness of the wastland and how hard it is to survive it with that said RAGE was possibly the biggest video game let down of my life.
Personally, I love wasteland games. Just the thought of finding something that would be worth nothing now; but would be worth a lot in a wasteland. Makes be a bit exited. Don't ask why. But it does.
I think when the next Fallout comes out, there will be a new and bigger trend than FPS and t will be RPG Wasteland type of games because in my opinion, COD and Battlefield were a let down this year and COD was a let down last year aswell!
@DN97xCFC I disagree with one thing, BF3 was amazing, not a letdown. The last time I was that happy playing an online FPS was COD4. I'm not saying the two are similar, just that the enjoyment factor for me, personally, was high.
With How epic Skyrim has been, I am now itching for a new Fallout Title. And I do think Rage deserves the torch, it had an anemic storyline and a less than open world. However it was massivly fun in the combat sense, it felt very fluid and meaty. It has its flaws but its all we have got right now.
If Bethesda creates Fallout 4 with either the same engine as F03/Fnv or the Skyrim engine it may be the best Rpg of all time. IF it has less modern weapons and more Auto-matic weapons(long live the (5.56). And the AK-47 in fallout games. If the automatic weapon is the most common weapon in fallout 4 it should attract more people.
i think it will go on cos meny of pepall love the wasts my exspeshely but i think thay might tack out the RPG aspekt of it sadly :( that is y i love fallout
UR FKING awsome ! I luv the wasteland... I mean not in real life but I played all the wasteland I culd get my hands on from Fallout 1/2/3/NV to Bioshock to BorderLands and I can't wait 4 RAGE ! Keep up the good work !
even though bioshock kind of gave birth to the wasteland type games, i feel that fallout 3 really made it more famous or whatever words youd like to use.
Wasteland games are truly one of a kind. Sometimes they're the only games showing real human nature, between greed and selflessness, survival and sacrifice, and everything in between. I salute the makers of these wonderful and unique works of art for creating such realized game worlds that get us ready to experience the inevitable future of humanity.
Do you know anymore information on rage? I mean it looks like an impressive, and ambitious game, however, like most wasteland games there is a large number of weapons, borderlands being the master at that. Just how diverse do you think the weapons and vehicles will be, or is it just going to stay with weapon modification and diverse ammunition types, all the same I'm getting this game. All the same the wastelands are awesome.
@bigblackbob1000 It's currently unknown and is to be announced. It has been verified, however, that it will not make an August release, so I'm expecting it for mid-September.
@FONVForTheWin Yes, I know it was. But Lonesome Road was originally scheduled for release in July 2011, but it was delayed and subsequently announced for an August release. It was later announced that it would not make an August release after all.
Get your facts straight before you go insulting people, douchebag.
Well just cause it wasn't released in the holiday time(metro 2033) doesn't mean that you couldn't have put a little something in there but good job as always hope somebody hires you soon.
(I never played metro but have seen gameplay, seems interesting enough)
Never played Borderlands. But Fallout 1 has gotten me to the wasteland even before it was cool. And when Bioshock came out, it really did draw me back in. when Fallout 3 came out, really, I never heard of the third Fallout game coming out so um...I shit my pants.
@Snipsonamine No, it's actually zombies, NOT wasteland, the island is a normal island a LITTLE smashed up, where as fallout, for example, is a completely destroyed environment.
My point friend, is how there was a wasteland reawakening, and how the original fallout games don't have anything to do with it. The reason being that they were part of establishing the idea. For that exact same reason they cannot play an active role in the revival, but only serve as precursor to present day.
Doesn't matter, those game was forgotten for more than a decade. Ten year old games can inspire current games, but they don't influence modern day trends.
I really like all you videos you create. I find them really helpful, informative, and your voice makes it epic. I was wondering what your favorite wasteland game ever made, even before current gen consoles. Just wondering.
@Jubbers69 I dont mean actually going there, I mean someone from England or something giving a description or a classic Fallout style slide-show of photo's.
A rebuilt society is how Fallout 3 should have been, too. It's how Fallout 1 and 2 were. It's 200 years after the great war. Society HAS rebuilt. New Vegas made that apparent. I'll be honest here, while I loved Fallout 1 and 2, I didn't like the gameplay. Fallout 3 brought great gameplay, but screwed up the story, style, and presentation. New Vegas brought everything together in one giant explosion of awesomeness.
I actually love how you can never talk down on this guy, he always has his story so well worded and goes into depth with everything! Never misses stuff out and if he does he will have already said he isnt involving that part! And then his voice is just amazing too!!
Fallout 4 in the Creation Engine will probably be on the Next-Gen consoles, I would love to see What DC or England is like now. (and yes England Survived, Alistair Tenpenny came over from England, no idea how though.)
@koolibuss Me too dude, the wasteland however, is a theme that is used in books, movies and games. Don't worry, as long as there is mankind, there will be interest in post-apocalyptic themed fiction.
Cool video link, as always. I hope you make a follow up on this some years later!
The wasteland is cool and all but it's kinda depressing spend long periods of time in. Which is another reason why i'm really looking forward to Skyrim. It will be nice to go through a world full of life, and forests. Plus while, Fallout is great, I guess I've always been more of an elder scrolls fan.
My personal faves are Rapture's ruined splendor and claustrophobia. And Fallout 3's adventuring across the ruins of a once proud (perhaps too proud) nations capital city
hopefully the fallout series carries the wasteland vibe because bioshock is great but i think fallout has a longer life spanned so hopefully the developers don't mess up and change that and because they have already put two games out most of the time when you think of wasteland you think of fallout if you have ever played them so i think they have a foot hold in the genre and they could ride that wave successfully if they chose to which i hope they do cuz i cant get enough fallout :)
i never herd of rage the plot sounds good but what about the gameplay and storyline will it be a new age for the wasteland or will it bite the dust hope to see more of other game revews
Im really looking forward to RAGE, honestly its the only game other than Skyrim I will probably put money down on. Gears 3, Modern Warfare 3 will be sitting on my list until Christmas.
I dont know if ill bother with Rage, its looks too much like bulletstorm and I perfer heavier RPG elements, but Ill look at some reviews and see what develops.
@coolair00 That's cute that you think New Vegas is a direct descendant of Fallout 2. Maybe you should check the Vault to make sure your "facts" are accurate. There are references to previous Fallout games, the most prominent being the "Wrecked Highwayman" that you can find on your way to Novac. Your Fallout "5" wouldn't be the fifth in series either; there are a couple more Fallout games whose names escape me right now. I know one of them is based solely around the Brotherhood of Steel.
@DefiantFennec Referring to Fallout : Tatics and Fallout : BOS based in Texas. Tactics really didnt have alot of roleplaying elements. I dont consider these part of the main series and more lateral aspects. If you want to get real technical you can add the orginal Fallout 3 "Van Buren" to the mix.
Fallout NV was more linked to Fallout 2 due to the NCR and the geographic area. By your reasoning, Fallout 3 shouldnt have been named 3 because of Tactics and BOS.
Well, Bethesda has stated that they do want to make at least one more Fallout game. So yes, i think the wasteland trend will continue on - at least for a little bit longer....
my favorite game is a tie between half life 2 and fallout 3 but fallout new vegas was not nearly as good as fallout 3 was in my opinion and the reason i think that is because of the game company that made it [obsidian] and i know that there the original creators of fallout but im always happy with bethesda's work
All these games were holiday window releases (fudging a little with Bioshock since it's where the modern trend started). Metro qualifies in it's own right, just no in the whole holiday hit cycle.
In my mind i imagine a wasteland experience but coop on a more grand scale were there is in no load screens and allowing creation of groups weapons armor and even societies
The future rpg wasteland tourch will be handed to bioshock Infinite and than the year after that will most likely be a fallout 4 I pray that theyll be a fallout 4 :)
I think this trend will continue indefinitely. like once it starts there's no stopping it is a boulder rolling down a mountain 10x the size of mount Everest do u get what im saying?
I've spent WAY too much time all of those games. And I've had serious addictions to Bioshock and Fallout (the story, the situation... it just simply fascinates me. I literally nerdgasm when i see the trailers, even if I've seen them 50 times already.) I have never heard of rage, but now I'm going to look out for it.... but idk, it doesnt have the same feel, its more borderlandsy, which i dont think anyone took that story too seriously.
Fallout 3 was the only one made by Bethesda, none of the others have anything to do with them development wise. However they did publish New Vegas, and are publishing RAGE. Just don't mix the two up, publishers have NOTHING to do with the development of a game.
Great video, i love wasteland games and have gotten all of the ones that were mentioned in this vid and I'm also anticipating R.A.G.E. I hope you do videos of that game when it comes out. Quick question though, when you were doing the Fallout: NV segment what gun were you using? I've played NV several times and have never seen that one before, at least I don't think.
i heard ron perlman and then i blacked out...and woke up with a srius bonner

I actually love how you can never talk down on this guy, he always has his story so well worded and goes into depth with everything! Never misses stuff out and if he does he will have already said he isnt involving that part! And then his voice is just amazing too!!

Fallout 4 in the Creation Engine will probably be on the Next-Gen consoles, I would love to see What DC or England is like now. (and yes England Survived, Alistair Tenpenny came over from England, no idea how though.)
JamesShaddex 6 months ago
im only worried that it will be used and abused like the zombie genre
tjl1297 6 months ago
@koolibuss Me too dude, the wasteland however, is a theme that is used in books, movies and games. Don't worry, as long as there is mankind, there will be interest in post-apocalyptic themed fiction.
Cool video link, as always. I hope you make a follow up on this some years later!

The only thing i can say is, after rage if the wasteland dosent stop i'm crossing my fingers for a fallout 4
LordNZane 6 months ago
The wasteland is cool and all but it's kinda depressing spend long periods of time in. Which is another reason why i'm really looking forward to Skyrim. It will be nice to go through a world full of life, and forests. Plus while, Fallout is great, I guess I've always been more of an elder scrolls fan.
Skorge789 7 months ago
My personal faves are Rapture's ruined splendor and claustrophobia. And Fallout 3's adventuring across the ruins of a once proud (perhaps too proud) nations capital city

hopefully the fallout series carries the wasteland vibe because bioshock is great but i think fallout has a longer life spanned so hopefully the developers don't mess up and change that and because they have already put two games out most of the time when you think of wasteland you think of fallout if you have ever played them so i think they have a foot hold in the genre and they could ride that wave successfully if they chose to which i hope they do cuz i cant get enough fallout :)
renegadedom218 7 months ago
i never herd of rage the plot sounds good but what about the gameplay and storyline will it be a new age for the wasteland or will it bite the dust hope to see more of other game revews

Fallout "5", is indeed on the slate for Beth.
coolair00 7 months ago
@coolair00 You mean Fallout 4, New Vegas is not Fallout 4 in any way shape of form;
Bethesda released a teaser at Comic Con. Get ready to head to San Francisco.
DefiantFennec 7 months ago
@DefiantFennec Fallout NV should have been Fallout 3 since it was the direct decendant to Fallout 2, storyline wise.
By 5 I was implying 5th in the series in chronologic order.
coolair00 7 months ago
@coolair00 That's cute that you think New Vegas is a direct descendant of Fallout 2. Maybe you should check the Vault to make sure your "facts" are accurate. There are references to previous Fallout games, the most prominent being the "Wrecked Highwayman" that you can find on your way to Novac. Your Fallout "5" wouldn't be the fifth in series either; there are a couple more Fallout games whose names escape me right now. I know one of them is based solely around the Brotherhood of Steel.
DefiantFennec 7 months ago
@DefiantFennec Referring to Fallout : Tatics and Fallout : BOS based in Texas. Tactics really didnt have alot of roleplaying elements. I dont consider these part of the main series and more lateral aspects. If you want to get real technical you can add the orginal Fallout 3 "Van Buren" to the mix.
Fallout NV was more linked to Fallout 2 due to the NCR and the geographic area. By your reasoning, Fallout 3 shouldnt have been named 3 because of Tactics and BOS.

@Own1239 did you even watch and listen to the video??

Wasteland games? In the 80's there was a game called Wasteland, which involved you traversing a wasteland...

@iscrewy
Too bad the first thing is said was "in the current console generation".

@Linkthe1st
I knew of that. You're right, I should have clarified my comment. I knew the video was about the current generation...
iscrewy 7 months ago
Well, Bethesda has stated that they do want to make at least one more Fallout game. So yes, i think the wasteland trend will continue on - at least for a little bit longer....

Bordershock Rageout 3 Newvegas?
Mrlookmyfinger 7 months ago
my favorite game is a tie between half life 2 and fallout 3 but fallout new vegas was not nearly as good as fallout 3 was in my opinion and the reason i think that is because of the game company that made it [obsidian] and i know that there the original creators of fallout but im always happy with bethesda's work

METRO 2033???
videogamerevie81 7 months ago
@videogamerevie81
All these games were holiday window releases (fudging a little with Bioshock since it's where the modern trend started). Metro qualifies in it's own right, just no in the whole holiday hit cycle.
Linkthe1st 7 months ago
@Linkthe1st oh ok I just really liked that game and didn't wanted it to be forgotten...
videogamerevie81 7 months ago
Fallout was based off of "A boy and his dog", not bioshock.
TheYakiin 7 months ago
@TheYakiin
I never said fallout was based on Bioshock, I said FO3 played off the success of Bioshock.

Link slot of people think you should do a DLC weapon guide. Also will you be doing videos for things like skyrim
Sniperwarrior2011 7 months ago
I've spent WAY too much time all of those games. And I've had serious addictions to Bioshock and Fallout (the story, the situation... it just simply fascinates me. I literally nerdgasm when i see the trailers, even if I've seen them 50 times already.) I have never heard of rage, but now I'm going to look out for it.... but idk, it doesnt have the same feel, its more borderlandsy, which i dont think anyone took that story too seriously.

You are a fucking talented guy !

what about skyrim?, i know its not really a "wasteland" but come on it's going to so much better than rage

hey link, amongst these games which is solely developed by Bethesda (apart from Fallout)
i wanna knw if there's any chance for Borderlands sequel
TheYamamoto007 7 months ago
@TheYamamoto007
Fallout 3 was the only one made by Bethesda, none of the others have anything to do with them development wise. However they did publish New Vegas, and are publishing RAGE. Just don't mix the two up, publishers have NOTHING to do with the development of a game.
Linkthe1st 7 months ago 2
@TheYamamoto007
oh thanks 4 d reply, by the way do u think there's a chance 4 BORDERLANDS 2? (i fink therz a new fallout comin)
TheYamamoto007 6 months ago
You should check out Resistance 3, its an FPS but humanity is now mostly gone so its almost a wasteland.
blackacid1000 7 months ago
Are you talking about consoles solely? Because there was also an MMO RPG I played a while back on PC called Hellgate.
