I think Hank Garland is one of the backup musicians if you listen you will hear the distinctive jazzy playing which was very sophisticated for country western music.
My posts are going to be out of order, but I also wanted to say that if Patsy had sung that song to me with her hand on my shoulder, I probably would have been reduced to an incoherent blob of something or other! I'd also like to add that in the days of live television, ANYTHING that could go wrong usually did, but I'm confidant that Patsy was already such a professional that she would have taken it in stride.
The quality of this production is surprising for 1955, when television was just out of its infancy. The only way to record a performance was to use a kinescope, which is essentially a 16mm film camera aimed at a television monitor. The camera angle changes at least twice, meaning there was a highly professional crew on the job. Also, the absence of visible microphones and the fact that she was able to move around means that they were probably using a "boom" (overhead moveable) microphone.
I have never heard her do this before....only heard of the song and seen it on several compliation albums....now I see where artists like Reba McEntire found the inspiration!! I love this and thanks for posting!!
I LOVE Ms.Patsy Cline!!!!!! She is the number one best female singer that ever was and is to come. There is NO ONE better then her lol God bless you Patsy your really missed.
@WishesSailorMoon As I said in a previous post, I'd have been reduced to an incoherent blob of something if it was my shoulder. But I also wouldn't say that she "grabbed" his shoulder... it was more like she just rested her hand firmly on it. ;-)
Yes, and in Ellis Nasour's book about Patsy, he discovered that when Patsy recorded this song, she was in the process of divorcing Gerald Cline due to his many indiscretions. According to those who were in the studio with Patsy, the hair on their necks stood up because of the intensity of her emotions, and it was only later that they found out she was living through the song at the time she recorded it.
Thanks for posting <3 i never really got to see her speak. I wish i was born around this time so i can get the chance to meet this wonderful person wonderful singer. <3
Never before her and never again will there be a voice as pure and clear as Patsy Cline's. Whether you're a country music fan or not, you cannot deny that Patsy was blessed by God with an AMAZING talent.
Wonderful 5* post. Patsy was just great. I have not had the pleasure of viewing this before, and I thank you sincerely for allowing me to do so now by sharing this wonderful post.
@afuninthesunday Yeah.... We all know Taylor Swift was pop, and so was Patsy after a little while, she crossed over as well. :) But she was was a MUCH better vocalist then Swift ever will be, Swift is a much better song writer than she is a singer.
How could Ernest Tubb sit there so calmly and not want to smack the beejesus out of Little Jimmy Dickens just so he wouldn't have to listen to that nasaly little mouse of a man anymore?
If you are a Patsy Cline fan, you should buy the DVD "Sweet Dreams Still". There are a lot of clips and this one comes from this DVD. Have a great day "magpieeye"
thank you hon... gotta love OUR Patsy... they just DON'T make voices like Hers everyday, she was truly "one of a kind" and a feisty gal, loved that about her... shame she is not with us but her music will ALWAYS live on...
She is not only the greatest singer ever....there is no-one ALIVE or DEAD even close to her talent. I have loved her for years, since i was 5 years old, and thats 49 years ! Brad Savage ---Lifelong fan and collector.
she was GREAT, my parents collected all different types of music, (hence my "varied", "eclectic" tastes...), and my Mom loved Patsy, as do I...
it is a sad shame Patsy left the world so soon, I often wonder just how much more Great stuff she would have put out... others as well... she had a voice like No other, FOR SURE... my favs by her are "Crazy" OF COURSE lol and "Leavin' On Your Mind" but I love all her stuff lol...
Just magic. Who the hell could handle such a song. IMHO the power of the song is generated by the singer. Cline brings an emotional understanding behind her songs. Goddamn gilr you dies to soon. I was never into country,I'm r&b and look her man, I'm buying everything I can on this country sista!! RIP in Peace Mrs. Cline! Damn!!!!!!
I have never heard this song before, I have a ton of Patsy Cline. Guess, I will have to find it, I love it....Real talent and no one no one can touch her.
Just wonderful that all these fantastic Patsy Cline videos are on youtube! Thanks, you guys! I have to admit as a teenager in the 50s I was unaware of her, but now I really love her strong, clear voice in every song. And that controlled emotion is unmatched! Wish she lived longer!
She is the best ever and will always remain the top female singer of all time. The clear sound of her words came without any strain at all. She surely was a great gift from God.
Seems like kind of a sign of the times at the moment where Little Jimmy Dickens asks Patsy how she's doing and really doesn't care about her response, cutting her off.
No matter - Patsy showed EVERYONE what it means to be a REAL star! Best voice in the entire spectrum of Country-Western music, PERIOD!!
