I hated my Big Lama. It was only good for hovering (which it does by itself - yawn) and very slow speed flying, ideally indoors as you don't have enough control authority to fight anything but the lightest breeze. Trying to actually *fly* it always resulted in the "roll of death", (rolls over and smashes itself into the ground), despite all the mods. Sold it on eBay for spares and bought a Blade 400 which actually flies like I expect and doesn't stuff itself into the ground unless I tell it to!
do you have problems with gyro overcompensating the rudder movement? I set the gain to minimum but it still overcompensats when giving throttle or rudder :(
Great video. Just got my Big Lama this weekend and I am already grounded as I have already destroyed both sets of blades it came with. I have ordered this extended inner shaft and extra blades. Can't wait to fly for an entire battery. Wind really catches it, tho.
Do you know anyone or any place in Auckland that has a receiver for a big lama 2.4ghz? the usual places can't seem to get them in which I thought was weird and a pain :)
Hmm any idea if a receiver from a lama v4 would do the trick?
Many thanks for these modifications. Question: How easy is it to replace (reposition) the tail rotor to the left side of the fuselage? If you did this the tail rotor might turn, on its own, by downwash from the main rotor blades. Thanks!
Hey Booger. :) I'm thinking of getting a Big lama but people are saying get an msr aswell. i really like your vids on the lama.. would you recommend it though??
@HeliPilotWill Hey man, they are fun, but I would go for a honeybee fixed pitch V2, or a MSR, and Ive had both. You soon get over co-axials, although they are fun!
@msteer79 That's what people have said. I dunno though. they looks like cruisers and they look quite fun... The MSR is about £35 more than this one so i'll have to see... All the mods you can do is amazing. I've had a bee for almost a year. but i would like a big co-ax. I love my bee but i think after a while, it can be a bit boring so having a co-ax and a Single Rotor would be a good combo i think.
I put the blades on the right way and checked it again. It's A blade top B for bottom but the Heli still wont take off. It seem as if it dont have the power to lift so it spins in circle...should the 3 in1 mix controller not be putting out the power..I dont know what to do.
I upgraded my big lama matal, new blades but no extreme inner shaft, will do later. but after i put on the new frame my heli works but wont lift off the ground. Both blades spin but will not lift off the ground just spins circles. I replaced motor B but still just spin with good battery, just seem as if it done not have power to take off ...help can anyone think what I should do. I wish there was someone that video the repair of all parts..
On my stock big lama i have just strengthened blades , no extened shaft , and no blade strikes. I tried an extended shaft but the heli was way to unstabe when throwing it around , was like it was top heave and out of balance for fast flight/turns , it gets the wobbles too much imo with the extended shaft. cheers.
Hi, just want to thank you for the tips. I did all 4 mods and it makes a world of difference. After putting on the shaft and extreme blades I haven't broken one blade. I went through all the included the stock blades in my first 3 flights. The heat sinks came today and the battery mod really gets the heli going good forward now. Great job!
@OregoNgEEz No problem mate, glad to help other out! I just saw that I had 13,000 views, I had no idea it was up to that many! I may have helped out 13,000 people! =-)
I just bought the metal upgrade and found that the flybar cap does not fit the stock flybar. Once installed, the flybar is stiff and I actually had to sand the center flybar connection so the cap would fit. Anyone run into this?
Hi msteer79 just want to ask what kind of heat sink did you use? Is it honeybee FP or honeybee CP3? And which one fits perfect for big lama that can cover the whole motor? Thank you for this video it's very helpful.
Make sure you put the CP3 heatsinks on, the main motor ones, they cover the whole motor, and stop them from overheating, if using the CP3 ones, you only need 1x per motor
cont. New extended shaft dosent have this groove that held bearing, oh and i had to hack saw my old shaft to get the top bearing past. So....how you guys get past the bearing?? Did your orginal shaft have a dedicated Bearing groove?? Any way have to wait for bearings now, just waited 2 weeks for the shaft. Also hope I havent damaged anything cause my heli was flying good before, besides the occasional blade strike. Spewing.
guys I just ran into a problem taking out the old inner shaft to install the extended one. I took out the nut underneath the bottom cog and the shaft slowly came out with alot of pressure and turning, I mean alot of pressure. Finally got it past the cog but the is a BEARING between the 1st and second cog. The shaft wouldnt come off this bearing so i Tried to hold the bearing with pliers and pull, bearing broke got the shaft out and there was a groove holding the bearing.
I love this helicopter, it has it limits but I always return to this one, even after msr,quark,blade400. I added lights and just about all to mine as well.Well done,Xheli has it in blk and green and red and white now adays.I remember gettin mine in 08'
Where do i get heat sinks... and how much they cost because i probably need them.. i'm waiting for the copter to come and i heard the motor heats up very quickly so i probably need it...
Is the AIRY TURBO KIT worth the money? Also, I just ordered some 3d blades from rc711, but Im not sure I got the right thing. It is 3d type c for big lama and it has 4 in the pack.
Hi there, you have ordered the correct blades. I havnt had any experience with the airy turbo kit, In my opinion all you really need is good blades(which you have) and the xtreme extended shaft
Great video! I have one of these and did a mod which I think everyone should do. I had a crash and upon impact the tiny antenna inside the heli snapped. I had to create one and solder it back inside (I am a tech). After installing my new antenna, I decided to create a guard for it to prevent future breakage. I cut up a disposable tupperware bowl and made a loop around the recevier inside the heli. Comment to me if you would like a pic. Easy safeguard for a $20 fix!
thank you for this info as I am about to buy one of those so I want to have every thing I need before I get it as I will be tempted to fly it stock and wreck it
ThinkRC has the extreme blades and the extended shaft. Mine just arrived.

Aluminum foil makes for adjustable heat sinks. Old trick more cooling surface depending on how you fold.
Nice vid, getting green one soon I hope.

I installed the longer shaft but it wobbles and the flybar does not fit, it's too snug and should be loose. Any ideas?

After these modifications, especially - brushless motors, could I safely lift 150 grams and fly aroun?
Thanks

@tekNiqueAU - I sanded down the grooves in the shaft a bit and then use WD40 and slowly twist the shaft in.

You want to get 2x CP3 heatsinks ESKY PART #2446, they cover twice the motor as the honeybee heat sinks, so you will only need 2 of them(not 4)

get the CP3 heatsinks #2446 from RC711 website
