@TheElite908 Yep, "The Walking Dead" show, is from a graphic novel. Even movies, like the movie "Cowboys and Aliens" that was a graphic novel. Same with "Sin City", and "300". There are many more I could name. A lot of producers/directors actually frequent comic conventions more now, because a lot of their best ideas come from graphic novels now. And when its done right, especially when they get connected with work with the creator; the movie or TV show is then pretty damn good.
@SwiftSilver23 Yep, many of the graphic novels I've collected from Japan; are written and drawn by the same person. The one I'm working on, is all written and drawn by me. Its common, it does take longer, but its doable.
Thanks for posting this on youtube, it's really helpful. The steps are very specific and simple, but I can't tell there's a lot of work put into it. :)
hmmmm...what about if your 13 yrs old and you are the artist and writer?....... do you have to write the whooooooooooooole story in paper ? do yu supose to write the story or what the characters words( like a play)?
@merary1bell Uh.. yeah, write the whole story like a play. Not just the character's words, their actions, how they feel, and where they are.
When you skim over the story for inspiration for what you're drawing, you then know how you should draw the character's emotions (on their face), the posture for their particular mood, and what kind of background scenery should go with it.
I just finished reading the first Scott Pilgrim book, which I thought was, frankly, the most amazing comic book ever. Now, I do love drawing cartoons (hell, I've filled up most of my Maths book with 'em!) and I'm not that bad if I do say so myself ( :3 ) and my younger brother is a really talented writer, currently finishing a piece he's been on...
Very cool! this really helps so thank you. Also what do you do for doing them digitally? ink, scan, fill? one more thing where can you publish a Graphic Novel?
Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you sooo much i am doin mine now but i am having truoble with the background but the characters r good.....;D
Don't Assume That By Watching This Video You Are on the path to becoming one of the World's greatest Artist Overnight , First Of All One must be "natural" To conceive a Good Storyline and insanely Gifted to produce award winning Illustrations, Marketing and promoting your work it's a different scenario but it may help if you dedicate some time to understand the ins and out of marketing your work, Ahh !! and don't Forget to read the fine prints before signing anything.
@worldwildwest save yoir dream crushing comments for someone who cares. obviously not everyone watching this video is going to become a famous author overnoght. and we're not all gifted talented artists, but if we try hard enough, we can be, so bitch your facts to someone who doesn't have dreams.
(continued..) techniques (hand drawn AND digital), preparing it for print, ways of printing/publishing (self publishing, approaching companies) ....seriously... what a waste of 5 mins of our time.
This guy sounds like he's not actually made his own graphic novel. Just over 5 mins on how to put a graphic novel together? C'mooon... he's glazing over only a few parts of it! He should go into depth of the story, depth of breaking it down (and different methods used to do so), different scenarios of just 1 artist doing the whole artwork or whether it'll be broken down to a team of people, watching your spaces for speech balloons/thought bubbles/caption boxes, lettering tips and (continued..)
Thanks for posting. Very informative and one of the many helpful videos that make youtube great.
Okay, so now the GN is inked & finished, what's the next step. How does one get it into a book form? What is ther process then & what cost are we looking at?
-Then what are the ways to "get it out there" to readers?
-What companies are good/bad (Image, Vertigo, etc) and which are worth sending the finished GN story to?
@razorblade42069 to get it to readers, try signing up on lulu(.)com, it is a free publishing site which turns your predone book/comic?etc. you upload into an actual book/comic/etc. and distributes it to Amazon(.)com/Barns & Noble/etc; if this is what you mean
I suggest Manga Studio. Debut 4 would be good to start out because it has all the basics.... But then you can go to the one that cost alot more... Or you can do it by hand. (Unless you have really bad hand writing!)
Why does everyone talk about how they are going to make their own graphic novel? Assuming you can draw like someone that has dedicated their life to learning to draw and probably has spent years at an art school, what makes you think you can write like someone who gets their books published.
Not to crush anyones dreams but i think people underestimate the love, talent, skill, and sheer man hours spend creating such works. Saying "im going to create my own graphic novel" is getting too trendy,
Um well this video is about HOW to create a graphic novel, so obviously everyone who watches this clearly wants to make one, so I guess you kinda picked the wrong page to post this comment idiot. I agree that a lot of people wish to make one and I agree that people are not artists or writers, but everyone has to start somewhere other wise no one would get anywhere in life..
Just because someone watches on how to do something doesn't mean they want to do it. It just means either they are researching, or just looking at career possibilities.
The biggest problem I have is putting my script together, I want it to be interesting; dialogue, composition, ect. My mind is just flooded with ideas but I can't seem to make it cohesive. Any suggestions? I'll see some of you guys at Comicon I hope, I'm bringing mine when I'm done!:)
Mark Crilley is a good artist however, his manga has american comic book traits (rounded chin etc) which is not necessarily a bad thing but if you're looking into making your own traditional manga style graphic novel, I wouldn't take everything he says to heart.
Where in my post did I say that the person in the video was Mark Crilley? In case you have not noticed I was replying to GamerHolicaust's post "Two words, Mark Crilley, best How to draw person ever."
And yes, he does draw manga for a living, manga with American comic book touches to it.
im working on one right now, its a very good concept not to toot my own horn...but as of now it is only me, and i would like some help, so if there are any other aspiring artists out there that are interested just send me a message
I don't agree about breaking down the page into panels right away , I personally like to imagine them in my head first , and draw the panels depending on the needs of the drawing I'm going to put inside (or sometimes - make it stick out of it in a 3d kind of way).
also , I think it would be helpful if you posted some basic things to make the comic more...in a way so people could understand it . maybe some ways to draw bubbles m headlines , and actions ...
Thanks . I just wanted to make sure I'm doing this 'right" . I've been thinking of a story for more than 5 years now , and i decided it's time to just paint it down . I didn't write all the story down in words , and I'm pretty bad with details (such as environments , buildings , effects , shading ...) but I don't care... i'm putting my soul into this . and if I'll like it (and hopfuly - other people will too) I'll re-draw it all if there will be any need for improvement (other than color) .
Very helpful advice. Can you do another video talking about choices of paper? For example what is the difference between a bristol 300 vs. a pre-ruled graph paper? what do the pro's use? What is the general size of paper preferred for production?
Hi if I wanna publish it. Do I hand a manuscript to the company? Or the entire story to them? I really need to know
