4. Worms eat the bacteria which grows on decomposing organic material. They slurp up the food in the process, but what they really want is the bacteria.
5. You should add some torn up paper or cardboard every time you feed them. It will help balance the moisture, keep it from smelling, and aerate it.
Would YOU want to live in a box of your own poop with nowhere to go? I hope not because that's sick. Harvest and try something with more layers, (bins), for the worms to escape their waste.
That bin looks to be pure castings. It's harvest time. I love sticking my hands in the gunk and checking on the population. Healthy worms are happy worms.
And no, they don't stink, nor the compost. Composting worms are not nasty. They are awesome living creatures just like us. They deserve all the respect, care & love we can give them. After all...they are just doing us a favor by keeping us free of organic garbage and fruit flies.
your gonna end up cutting worms in half, then they die=less worm casting production, i made a vermiculture, although the worms dont seem to be doing much

Good job for a start though. ^_^

1. careful with the coleslaw- no dairy in these! Bad news for the wormies.
2. Worms do NOT regenerate when cut! They die!
3. Do not compress the casting on top! that reduces air and worms need air! Maybe that's part of why it smells so bad.
