  • "this is england we can chain you to the rail , this is england we can kill you in a jail" . . . i dont think it is about how great the world is cause england hahhahahhaha , come on man . . .

  • @sk84funman I wasn't commenting on what the song was about, I'm commenting about the song.

    Come on man...

  • USA .. Can't you build your own 'UK' of your own. ? FM !

  • What are yanks coming here for? Talking about I love dickens . What's wrong with your own country ? Have you got struggles there?

  • two of my favourite bands of the time were the clash and skrewdriver

  • American respect muh friend

  • i am sure i am just another ignorant American, but i love ENGLAND and the English...Dickens, the Empire, Queen Victoria, yadda yadda....and the Clash. The only band that ever mattered.

  • this is uk

  • I guess this song is to England what 'Born in the USA' is to America. For people who were not around in the 70's its hard to remember how desperate people felt. (Strikes, no jobs, power black outs) The lowest ebb in what had been a slow decline in England since 1860 (Englands height) Of course things appeared to improve in the 80's but Strummer and Co wernt to know this in '81 when the song was written/released.

  • @hamptonwickster Song was written in 1983, released in 1985. I find it hard to imagine how Strummer, as an out-spoken critic of conservative politics, would consider the developments of the 1980s an improvement.

  • I'm from the states and love the Clash. Their music is just as poignant as it was when I was a teenager. My country is in deep trouble. We need something to believe in.

  • Omg, i heard this song around 4 or 5 years ago. Only now i found who is the artist. :D

  • brilliant song but it should be the St George's flag, the Union Jack is for the whole of the United Kingdom

  • great song, great flag, soz too offend, but i'm irish with 3 little british brothers, they played it to me day after day after day aft etc, i love it , but me me ma and me da put on finnergans wake, and they love it

  • The last great clash song.

  • i may be wrong here but i see no problem using the union flag instead of george's cross. the union flag is for britain, united... but is it really that way. scotland and ireland and wales are ruled by england. britain is just whats left of the empire under controll of england, ( aside from the common wealth ) so the flag is just as much english as st georges cross.

  • @sparkingtonstanly i beg your pardon but ireland is not ruled by england or britain or the uk, and that flag is wrong, but a great song all the same

  • @shanebyrne996 shit, i cant evan remember writing that.... i must have been drinkin... yes you are right.... i think i might of ment nothern ireland... evan tho thats not britain!! i really shuld not type things when drinkin i always end up offending people, lol. sory, scotland is cool, i go on holiday up to lock lomand all the time, ireland is cool, i used to live in county limerick and wales is cool, loads of castles and the origonal britons lived their... i ment no offense just drunkenchat

  • @shanebyrne996 the flag is right for what i wanted it for

  • Shouldn't the cross of St George be used instead of the union jack flag if the song is called "This is England"? I'm a yank and I know this! =P

  • @x0th101 I dont think it should be. This song is about the problems that only the english know of, so since i dont know the problems, i compare this song to the problems between england and ireland. And to be perfectly honest, i dont care that ur american

  • My groups to get this bittersweet anthem as Christmas number one now has over 700 members, so thank you to anybody that's joined. We don't want X Factor to get to number one, and after the fucked up year that was 2010 I think This Is England would be quite an appropriate swansong for the last 12 months.

  • I'm the moderator of the facebook group to get support for this song to be the Christmas number one. In response to the comment that I'm doing this for a cheap pub stunt,. I just figured maybe for a change have a song at number one at Christmas that means something. But nobody knows that because a lot of Clash fans disowned it, and as it never gets played on the radio, so if we follow your request and 'leave it alone' barely anyone who isn't middle aged will know 'This Is England' exists.

  • love it!!

  • I adore this song, and every thing the clash stood for, i dont want this song, being used as some cheap pub stunt, for a facebook campaign to get it to no 1 at xmas..its bad enough the bloody right wing groups using it ..leave it alone ..

  • More accurate representation of England than the national anthem. Knives, police kicking the shit out of people... and protests. The only thing we have going for us is that we know how to fucking party against the government when the time is right.

  • is the string section 0.7 onwards violins played backwards? If not could a musician explain it?

  • yz every1 goin sick.. the clash rnt rasict put it this way half my familys jamaican but i was born and bred in liverpool and i grew up lsitening to the clash now me family wouldnt stick this on if it was racist would they.. an its just a flag (the best in the world has it happens after st.georges) but england is part of great britain just let it be and enjoy the song

  • oi oi oi

  • Best song ever.

  • Type in.........Speech At Pub 17.07.2010 ..DOING PROTEST AT ..LLOYDS HOUSE BRMINGHAM ....................POLICE HQ.....DATES COMEING UP SOON

  • This is a UK flag.

  • Some people's perception of the meaning of this song is as amusingly ironic as the lyrics themselves. Bit like 'Rockin' in the free world'. All songs should be laden with irony to expose the bigots and the chauvanists for the fools that they are.

  • @PBANDSNOW Yes its a birtish flag, which includes the countries scotland and ireland. But this song is about England, and that is not the english flag, the english flag is just white with red cross.

  • @PBANDSNOW Its modern because you say so ? get real, the union flag is out of date,it's only being kept alive by people who live in the past, armed forces and the BNP !! it also has no place in this vid as the song is called This is England not This is Britain.

There's nothing wrong with making a vid with a song and a stationery pic, just that this song and pic don't go together in my opinion.

Spare me "if u did your history" when it comes to this great band I'll be here all night !!

  • The mistake that everybody do listening to this song is thinking the clash were patriots

  • @MrPemmy

U are right there but i think its just cause they are english and dont understand the language ;)

    well Joe wouldnt liked it

  • Their crappiest album but this songs is great :)

  • This and some other songs from Cut the Crap make me sad to listen to. With the melancholy feeling, mixed with a vision of Joe Strummer talking about how what makes up a band, and not MESSING with it, saying, "We learned that bitterly", and also that fact that he is gone.... yeah.

  • @ lovelovehatehate57

If you were around at the time this was released you'd know

  • Yes, it was written as a protest song, by a very passionate and patriotic man.

  • patriotic? Joe hated patriots.

  • I DO, BUT ALL THE SAME, JOE HAD MANY POSITIVE FEELINGS ABOUT ENGLAND. GOD BLESS YOU JOE. GRA, TOXTETH, LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND. Saw Clash many times at ERICS , LIVERPOOL, WONDEROUS TIMES.

  • you do realize the lyrics were about his negative feelings towards england?
