The guitarist's name was Ashton "Sugar" Chiweshe. He was never fired by Mukanya but decided to go it alone and would return to Mukanya as a session guitarist. R.I.P Sugar.
I heard he was fired after this for showing off. Mukanya did not like to share the limelight, LOL. Whatever the story, this is the best guitar solo I have ever heard, white people and their riffs can go and jump. Fantastic. Suddenly makes you realise how much we have missed out on because of ONE MAN,
I heard he was fired after this for showing off. Mukanya did not like to share the limelight, LOL. Whatever the story, this is the best guitar solo I have ever heard, white people and their riffs can go and jump. Fantastic. Suddenly makes you realise how much we have missed out on.
Is this also Zimbabwean? I see some elements of Taarab (Coastal music of Zanzibar, Tanzania and Mombasa, Kenya) and since the title "Moyo Wangu" is in Swahili i must believe that the song has a mix of Taarab and African or let's call it Zimbabwean style of music.
@AthaBeat This a Zimbabwean artist singing in a language called Shona, which is quite similar to Swahili. Moyo Wangu means "My Heart" in Shona. The style of music is popuarly known as "Chimurenga".

it gives me chills.. I'm from Colombia but I believe there's a little bit of Africa in all of us, Africa is our mother, this music is like food for the soul
Will someone please put the "Corruption" LP or CD on here as I saw this performance at a pungwe outside of Harare in 1988. Thank you and "Mr. Music" would be greatly appreciated too!
Imi that guitar....its like making making love totally addictive I watch this video everyday just to hear the sound of that guitar....CLIMAX......WOW.....R.I.P Aston mwari !!
I first heard this music in 1985, a white guy who left Africa because of Apartheid left me all of his records to look after, and Thomas Mapfumos music blew me away-the best!
Can someone please put on some of the "Corruption" Lp from the late 80s as I was in Zimbabwe when that came out and saw him perform it at a pugwe or something like that outside of Harare--it went all day with performers coming and going. I managed to convince Thomas' manager to let me record it. How about "Mr. Music" LP too! Thanks again for all the tracks.
I have never heard this guitarist before and really quite like this track. I wonder if this track is on a CD. I think I would have danced on the stage to. Thank you!
One unsung bassist to come out of Zim is Isaac Chirwa. Ko who can post Corruption by Mukanya?. Someone asked about a song that goes,''Hama dzangu munoda magariro akadiniko paasi pano'', that was the one time wonder Sekuru Gora. Another student of TM who made waves on her own was Patience Mudeka. The gal was also very sexy.
Ashton Sugar Chiweshe was a twine teaser of sorts, the guy was just too much for TM to handle. Other Zimbabwean lead guitars of repute include Louis Mhlanga, Jonah Moyo who continues to belt out for the Vendas in Limpopo Mzansi,Simon Chimbetu & Leonard Dembo. Madzibaba Nicholas Zacharia comes close, but he, like Macheso is better known for the bass guitar.
im a Ndebele guy who has blinded by tribalism but muzic has the power to heal and build bridges and such is this song ...Genius and the guy on the guitar is a real genuis to the point that i feel he is a show off..God bless
for a long time i always thought jonah sithole and jonah moyo were the baadest guitarists of our age, dont get me wrong until i heard sugar belt out some of his unforgetable expertise with the electric wire.this guy is magnificent.i did'nt understand why he was asked to liv the blacks unlimited so much talent but so little room to shine. And he did really shine on this show.
@kachaso ashton was not asked to leave the band.ashton as talented as he was he resigned from the band cause he had started his own band.thomas wouldnt do such stupid thing to terminate ashton's contract with him,coz ashton was the greatest guitarist to this date mapfumo always mentions ashton, jonah, joshua, ephraim karimaura, washie kavhai and allen mwale as great guitarists, but ashton was my best
Great bands are made of members who are given the space, within the group, to explore and showcase their talents, pity Ashton was never exactly what TM wanted. But on this one, it shows what that space can produce
Ashton Chiweshe's style of guitar playing was beyond advanced, i could understand why Mapfumo started to feel insecure then again Mapfumo shoould have learnt to play the guitar...anyhow this guy should be put on the limelight for a post humous award!
Oh my days...was only a little kid when this music was the shizzle...reminds me of my uncles.....am up studyin n this music is keepin me goin...still the shizzle...hope Zim recovers to a better level!
