Yes the bodies are model bodies but also there are companies that make resin and lexan bodies. There are several companies that make chasis, motors, and all kinds of parts for them. There are also a lot of the guys making their own chasis by soldering brass or stainless rails. Search slot car drag on Ebay and you will find tons of stuff. Thanks for the comments.

Although it would be cool from the side it would be very hard to shoot. These cars are covering 54 feet in roughly 1 second @ 40-60 mph.
