Ah, when I showed this to my friend and my cousin, my cousin's all like, "I can play better than that!" . She's only 2. Lol. Then she goes to our piano and plays a bunch of random stuff, then says, "Ta-da! I told you!" and when my friend saw this, (She's only 3) she said, "When I grow up I'm going to be just like him!" and I asked, "When is that?" And she said, "In August!" xD 3 year old playing this piece? Could be possible!
You've influenced many people, John. Keep it up. :)
Wow!!! If you compare my video to yours, it's like 1 to 1,000! Amazing!!! O.K. I'm going to repost my video in hopes to reach a good position, but I know it won't be as good as yours!! Good Job, John!
This is wonderful! Hey does anyone know about the trill he plays after the octaves at bar #23? My sheet music does not have this...so I'm curious. Is that just his interpretative addition? Thanks...I'm just beginning so excuse my lack of knowledge!
Everything is correct with this performance: sound, articulation, expression, dynamics, tempo. It's very nice and pretty, but after the first movement, I lose my interest - I'm bored with his interpretation, especially with the 2nd and 3rd movements, where the pianist has even less to say than the beginning movement. It's a very safe, academic, manner of playing Mozart. Shouldn't there be more to Mozart than this?
you play beautifully!! i'm learning this song and i'm glad you're the first one i've heard play this mozart..you gave me inspiration..have a good day!^.^
;D Oh my god. Your level seems so far away, because you play beautifully. Your music is clear ( which I do not posses) and you have alot of exppresion. (which I try to hard on xD ) You are my role model. I listen to this everyday now before piano. And I'll doubt that I can ever play as well as you because I have a contest on Saturday, the 14th. D: My best wishes to you. ;)
an extremely common sentiment, i have felt the same way many times myself... but i have found that control, consistency, and maturity (of interpretation) are the most difficult and most important parts :-)
how the chineses people can write in english? on the keyboard of their computer there are our alphabets? howewer, you are a great pianist, zhongguoren!
Yes it is one whole Mozart Sonata divided into three seperate movements (first, second, and third)! A sonata format is very much like a symphonic format with just piano and no orchestra.
Yes it is not 'difficult' to the untrained ear, but did you know it takes professional musicians about a year of work to get a peice like this up to concert- standard? you may think its easy, but try listening to the difference between 'Ashley' (on You tube) playing this peice, then listen again to John Chen. There is vast difference! I can play this peice, but with nowhere near the finesse and grace of JC. I will keep practicing, and you should too. :-)
I agree. While the notes themselves aren't that hard, it's also important to get the interpretation. I suppose intermediate level pianists can play the notes to this piece, but can they perform it, like you said, up to the concert standard?
I think my comment was misunderstood. What I meant was John played this piece well. Some people have said things like, "yeah I can play that too, and I'm only 12". OK, you can play that, too...but can you play that as well as John?
Yes, but can you play it with expression and musicality, or do you just understand how to plunk out notes really really quickly?
Like somebody asked more recently.. Can you play it as well as John? With as much control and mature interpretation? No offense, but most likely not. I'm working on this one for a solo competition myself, and believe, that's one of the major things I'm working on is interpretation and musicality. And I'm 16. And it is hard if you truly try to play it as music.
Have you tried listening to Ashely (on this site) playing the same peice, then listen again to John Chen. There is a HUGE difference, some of which comes from technical ability, and some from maturity of interpetation, no offence.
I played this when I was 8. It's not hard to press all the notes on your music sheet of course. But I guess you should appreciate his touch, the control and the dymanics; and the fluid flow of the music. This is an excellent performance.
LOL! don't you guys know who this is? He isn't some amateur pianist. He is the youngest ever winner of the Sydney international piano competition in 2004 and like performed for the Arthur Rubinstein international piano competition earlier this year. He even has recording's with like nax os and ABC classics. Wonderful playing John! One of my greatest role models in piano!
GOD. how do you play so well? never in a million years will i be able to play as well as you do right now. GREAT JOB and keep it up. you should upload more of your piano videos i would love to watch them
He can memorize the entire sonata (all 3 movements) because he practiced it to perfection. He can play the entire piece in his mind without the piano!! PS: so can I.
Oh, by the way I played this Mozart sonata in a piano competition when I had just turned 14 years old. Unfortunately, I did not have the emotional maturity to understand what I was playing. Fortunately at the age of 54 I now have the emotional maturity to understand this sonata extremely well. Like a good vintage wine, a stradivarious, an 1874 Steinway concert grand that List toured with...etc.
Excellent technically, however,if were going to get technical in bar 104 and bar 109 of first movement(Allegro) the last 4 notes in the treble clef are CAGF not BAGF!
