casake is an idiot! buy a ford, have worse problems. sounds like an exhaust leak! buy a stethascope, take off the lame rod and put a brake line into it, youll find your leak when u can hear the leak and exhaust in your ears! lol! it works awesome! i work at a shop and do custom exhaust, its the only way to find those shitty nasty noises!
i have a 1986 suburban that does that, and i know where the leak is, but since i dont have a tach(rpm), and it knocks at the same speed the engines turning, im gonna let it leak, and use it as an audible tach
My sequoia isn't to bad it doesn't lose power i took it and had it tested on a Dyno and it doesn't and it only makes the noise when its cold. I am getting the motor rebuilt soon so i wont have the problem any more!
@jaguarnumber9 It got really bad, like to the point of driving down the highway and I could hear it even when the car was hot. so I finally got sick of it and looked up and down the exhaust and found that there was a leak in a union under the cab. I welded it up and it really helped, now it just ticks when cold again. Pretty sure that its the headers so Im just saving up for a full exhaust system.
well, I can't take videos since I don't have a Camera, but My headers should be here next week, and it will probably take a while to get them installed (very restricted space around the manifolds)
I'll let you know how it goes, I think it's the problem that's causing codes like: Bad Catalytic convereter, and Faulty 02 Sensors, and Misfire.
will you take a before and after video of it and/or tell me how the new ones work. I am looking at doing the same thing but I have heard mixed reviews about the headers actually fixing the problem.
Yeah, It fixed the problem, I installed the new exhaust headers and just started it, now it's very quiet, no ticking noise anymore.
I installed the headers, and new gaskets for them and the exhaust flange, and now all you hear is a whining noise in the engine (maybe another problem).
well, 230,000 miles down, and i'm expecting at least 100,000 more from my toyota!
VVTI veriatable valve timing computer ajusted valvs/timing,and a internal timming chain could make simular noises also it looked ok but i think its the egt vlave but that hose with the green shit on it has poped off at times b4 and i just plug it back in the second i ripped on it it happend and when i put a intake it did it and a threw a code(engine light came on)....went off after a few miles200-300mi actually
my neighbor told me that an old man he new a long time ago taught him a cool trick to add 1 qaurt of tranmission fluid to every 5 gallons of gas you put in your car and it will clean out the valves and make the car run like new
Yup, my dad's 2000 tundra apparently has a tiny pinhole leak in the manifolds, making the engine sound as if it's knocking (well it sounds like metal on metal), where it's really not. The manifolds cost crazy money to replace so he just left em the way they are and the truck's been making that sound for the past 50-60k miles (now it has about 130K), and it still runs fine. robbiebobbie... I wouldn't worry about it too much. maybe have a mechanic diagnose it.
yup no prob... oh and regarding the tapping noise going away after it warms up, that used to happen to my dad's truck too. When cold, the engine would make that tapping sound, but once warmed up, it would stop. But it's doing that basically all the time now. I'm guessing the holes got a little bigger over time. Don't sweat it, you have a toyota. ;-)
well in my expierences all the toyotas that we have had were junk and its not because we hadnt kept up on maintenece or anything its just stuff kept goin wrong, and you got a sick banshee by the way
-yeah this is my first car and I just don't want it to blow up on me :-(
I will never sell it just cause i like it so much but I was just looking to see how many more miles i can go before it has to be parked for a while.... :-(
How can you justify that comment? I used to work for a specialist Mercedes Benz garage, and all the mechanics drove Toyota's as their daily drivers - and for good reason too....

Well, I paid $130 for my Headers from Ebay.

Yeah, it's the Exhaust manifolds
My Tundra Has the same problem, i found that the left exhaust manifold has a leak in it, and you can clearly see the carbon deposits on the manifold.
I just ordered some Exhaust headers to fix it, and for better performance, they should get here on Friday, and I don't know when they'll be installed.
Shouldn't hurt anything, but it may be causing my check engine light to come on, but it still runs great with 230,000 miles

MAKE SURE TO USE THE RIGHT OIL AND LEAVE IT PAST HALF FULL. MAKE SURE ITS ALWAYS ON FULL. THAT'S how i cured my Mitsubishi tick problem.

exhaust manifolds, on theese they leaked through small pinholes in the welds on the manifolds and noise would clear up
when engine warms up
dtravis82 2 years ago
that was how it was for about 6 k miles. but now it makes the same kind of tapping noise all the time
robbiebobbie111 2 years ago
I know is kind late, but did you check pressure of your piston?
