also, our good works are not simply to gain God's favor, they are to be used, as the bishop does, to purchase or earn the redemption of others who are struggling. The Bishop parts with his silver but has bonded Valjean's soul from spiritual prison. In return he gains the knowledge that he has set this redemption in motion and finds it to be a fair exchange.
I'm not strongly religious but this film and especially this scene changed my life when I first saw it in 98. The bishop illustrates the example of Christ that we should all be following. Use our advantages to aid the disadvantaged for that is their purpose.
@becgift Chuck Smith down in Costa Mesa, California is a modern day Jean Valjean. He was a pastor and his elders wouldn't let the shoeless hippies into his church because they'd just re-carpeted it. He came upon the scene of them turning the hippies away. He told them to let them in and he started tearing up the carpet. He told the elders that if the carpet was going to keep these people from God, then he had to tear it up.
Great vid. Thanks for the Christian mythology adoption of all the redemption and change themes. Please explore other religious traditions and maybe you will find a common theme in scripture across beliefs. Not a sermon, just a thought.
