The problem is that race relations in this country are poor, we like to look at the civil rights movement and pretend that that was it, racism is gone and we have all overcome. I do agree the educational system of America needs serious reform. However I feel Rev. Meeks chooses to use a race vs. race stance because of the response it envokes. Meeks' Vision 2007 program that puts into action the Great Mandate in Matthew 28. I don't agree with Meeks' comments or choice of words, but it's far from the norm at his church.

As a teacher in Chicago, I know Meeks is a great man. Someone needs to step up and stop just accepting the "scraps from the table," when it comes to educating our children. They must have the tools to compete in a quickly changing and global society. Yet, many minority schools do not have the tools they need to be successful & competitive.

The problem is that race relations in this country are poor, we like to look at the civil rights movement and pretend that that was it, racism is gone and we have all overcome. The truth is that we grudgingly took a tiny baby step and have spent the rest of the time patting ourselves on the back about it. The fact of the matter is that our society on many levels is still racist and does inflict harm on minorities either by accident or design, and this NEEDS to be addressed instead of ignored.

I do agree the educational system of America needs serious reform. However I feel Rev. Meeks chooses to use a race vs. race stance because of the response it envokes. He seemingly uses it to draw attention and create furor. I do feel he has good intentions, but I believe his methods only serve to further racial divides within the nation, and if we are to move forward progressively we cannot continue to make race an issue.

The term minority has to do with a combination of population percentage as well as economic and political power. Like it or not, we do still judge based off of color, it has been less than 200 years since we finally abolished slavery, and let's consider that the work to make it so that any non-white could fully participate in this country as an equal was even more recent. The fact of the matter is that the system itself is loaded against african americans, latinos, and other ethnic groups.

I understand that black people have had a real bad deal in the past, and I know that problems of prejudice have not been fully resolved, but I am tired of the double-standards. Rather than respond with anger and vitriol, I can tell you that as a former member of Meeks' church, that he has spoken (and DONE) a whole lot more for his community than what people may realize. He's spoken about violence in the community, people relying on the government to bail them out, and other issues that affect the community (as this sermon, regarding education). Name me one pastor that cares about his community so much that he got the community to vote liquor stores out of business.

Rather than debate you back and forth, I would encourage you to view the other videos of Rev. Meeks in action. There are videos of his church fellowshipping with Willow Creek, a considerably large white church (they have worshipped in one another's churches quite frequently). There are also videos of Rev. Meeks' Vision 2007 program that puts into action the Great Mandate in Matthew 28. I don't agree with Meeks' comments or choice of words, but it's far from the norm at his church.

As a teacher in Chicago, I know Meeks is a great man. Someone needs to step up and stop just accepting the "scraps from the table," when it comes to educating our children. They must have the tools to compete in a quickly changing and global society. Yet, many minority schools do not have the tools they need to be successful & competitive.
