I love this song because it's haunting. It's hard to find songs like this one. It's not sad so much as...depressed? No, lethargic. It's the song that would be in the background of someone lying in a field, staring at the sky, while the camera slowly circles around them. Maybe intercut with memories of sad moments in black and white.

The war movie scene- feeling may come from the gears of war trailer :p And of course a song as good as this is probaply used in many movies/videos/trailers etc. which dont really tell the real story of the song.
