The idea that children need to be free in every way is just as mad as the idea that children should be forced to do everything. Some kind of middle ground needs to be found, and psychology can provide us with the the answers on where this middle ground should be.
I think it is noteworthy that the terms optimist and pessimist are very subjective and specific to the situation, one should be careful with dismissing a school of thought simply because it is 'optimistic' or 'pessimistic'.
I don't think the anything goes model is any good, neither is the tread them down theory, although we need to bounce off good and bad experiences to find a livable center philosophy of survival, although everyone is different ( and you cannot change people ). Everyone needs to be watched and controlled to some small degree - for there good and everyone elses -

Constructive Pessimism is optimistic.
(not by nature maybey but on the whole)
Aswell as a tendency of Alcoholics.
