...what about Simon Phillips? Quite underrated when we are talking of Jazz-Drummers. At least I would say, Phillips is one of the most complete and flexible living drummers,,,
One of the reasons I love Billy so much besides for the obvious fact that the guy just rips it in any meter and makes it feel good no matter what, is how you can instantly recognize him for his wall of sound he produces and all his ridiculous fills and other trademarks he throws in,especially the falling down the set of stairs fills! Oh man 5:20

at this levels, there's no one better than anyone.there are gadd, colaiuta, weckl, peart, el negro hernandez, cobham and more and more fantastic drummers. you can prefer one of this, but ther's no one better than anyone. at this levels
cabirius you are an idiot w/your gadd lies. He's no more important than neil peart in a context of this caliber. Only buddy morello williams dejohnette roach and other jazz greats qualify. Did gadd ever do a bonafide solo?Play hard blaze scorch asnre drum play jazz for real not muzak commercialfusion like his stuff b/s. Have you ever seen a real drummer live? do you even play or just dream on your xbox? Air drum away on guitar hero? That's about your experience highlight
Fuck Neil Peart in here. Put him back on the comic book rack. Billy is the shit for fusion and funk sorry fattoad Chambers you belong on rack too. Also all this Gadd idolatry. You fuckin fools have not seen this or other Billy stuff. There is no Gadd after this. To the rack w/him too. This section of youtube is for the greats. Buddy Tony w. philly sonny elvin you guys know.
Actually, Billy's undisputed innovation was turning the china cymbal "upside down", and putting it at arm's reach, behind him :-) I think Dean Parks is pretty "sloppy" on this, especially when you've listened to people like Frank Gambale :-)
Billy Cobham is every bit as good as Buddy Rich. In fact, when the two were in the forefront back in the '70s, Billy regularly beat Buddy in the "best drummer" category of the Downbeat magazine music polls.
What that means is up to you. You can't say that one is better than the other at that level of playing.
it's all good....you are entitled to your opinion....I have seen both, performing live, and was blown away by both....I don't prefer one over the other, but as a drummer, I saw skills that Buddy possessed that I have never seen anybody else touch....Anyway, as I said, it's all good
@jbc6 buddy was a great drummer with much talent. billy cobham is more because he developed a new style of drumming with great influence upon the whole scene. Moreover billy always mastered the most complicated odd time signatures, something buddy never could do. I admit i don't like buddy rich because he was always showing off whereas billy is working with understatement.
Billy Cobham is one of the holy trinity of living drummers. The other 2 (in any order you please) are Dave Weckl and Dennis Chambers. Who is the greatest of all time? That's easy! Buddy Rich of course!
Check out Brecker Bros 1980s with Neil Jason and Dean Brown. Superb! Like 'Gnosistic', I hadn't heard of either of them until 3 weeks ago. Thank goodness for Youtube (and contributors!).
Very cool vid and great band w/ Dean Brown - gtr, Tim Landers - bs, & Gil Goldstein - kybds. Europe '82 or '83. This was Billy's 'Glass Managerie' band.

I grew up with all his records in my ears,in my brain,in my heart.
I don't know guys, but I feel something of than a respect for the Master Billy Cobham.
I don't feel to compare his playing to other drummer, but we guys know that a lot of "great name" have "stolen" by his playing...and drumset too ;)

I like Williams too, but Bill's technique/ sound is much more chrisper and cleaner sounding to my ear.And I can always tell which is which...

Love Cobham - not as funky as Alphonse Mouzon or as clean as Buddy Rich - but hey, that's what makes us love them all!

So that's where Portnoy gets that 'stand up while drumming' thing. Cob's did it first.
And no, Cob's is not the greatest of all time. No one drummer is... cam on.... grow up dudes.

Al Jackson used to stand up while drumming with Booker T & the M.G's in the 60's. I think there's a video of that around here....

Does anybody know about what year this was ? Is this before or after Mahavishnu Orch, which was 1971-1974.

Not sure exactly, but it's quite a long time after the Mahavishnu Orchetra. I think the early 80's
