Man i hate how people dont listen to actual music like this masterpiece here, cant they realize this is true art, and Matt's powerful lyrics come from his poetic past, such an amazing singer..... no wait THE Best band ever!
@FUELEDbyVEGGIES Most of the good chord progressions are - there's been a lot of music made.
Maybe the beauty is in creating something that's unique regardless?
(Everybody who reads this should listen to A Few Kind Words by Meursault; I'm adding this because it's a song I love and it embodies the above. And the band are still about sixty feet's worth of underground, if that's your thing.)
Incredible performance! Really pisses me off when people say Matt is a terrible singer, he is phenomenal! his songwriting is so original! The National are a fresh breath of air in these musically dull times!
@FelixMerchant I couldn't agree more. Something snaps when people say he can't sing. Every word he sings is beautiful. His lyrics are what everyone wants to write. What everyone tries to get at and tries to say in such a way that people will understand, and still have it sound so beautiful.
@chea1500 "stay inside until somebody finds us, do what the tv tells us" the whole song could be about a conversion between a family, during nuclear fallout. all those images look like mushroom clouds atomic bomb explosions.
The shaky camera work is a little off-putting but the music's great.
Matt has said in interviews that he hasn't had any formal vocal training & it's obvious in his singing but in a good way - he sounds this great even with no backup vocals & only a guitar to accompany him. Love it.
They actually came to Moscow this Summer and I read an interview they gave in the The Exile, but at that point I'd never heard of them and just assumed that they were another droning listless indie band. After listening to Boxer, I regret not having listened to them earlier, I think their music is the soundtrack to every man whose in the twilight of his youth, eye to eye with both his mortality and the fact that there is no reset button in life, the current flows one way. Simply brilliant.
@krzhizhanovsky ummm, that's very introspective of you. i think there is more to the national than that. I have never thought of them that way, but to each his own, and i respect your opinion. glad you like them too.
I caught the National this spring opening for REM in LA and again in San Fran....... they were awesome, went right out and bought Boxer. I have gotten like 10 people to buy the album. Great band
what brand is his guitar? I love the sound, and am buying a good new one soon...I know that's probably very expensive, but what's the brand? Is it a crafter? (wild guess)
amazing.
