It's a non issue really concerning the small amount of real estate vertically, just do whatever fit your preferences ... I just so used to having my dock at the bottom
can't you autohide the dock? I'm just asking, I don't use MacOSX, I use various linux distros and pretty much every dock here has an autohide option, so i guess it's an option in the macos dock?
@phototristan oh! silly me! I'm accoustumed at using the dock exclusively as a launcher and having the windows showing in the taskbar as little icons that I forgot you guys use it as an all-in-one thing
up is the way to go, just use firefox and have the tabs not on the top if using firefox 4 and make it so it pops up when you move your cursor to the top
It's much more efficient, both when using a trackpad or mouse, to move down than extend your arm to the right (or left). It's more logical and accessible.
I do this on Firefox (tabs on the right using add-on) and Windows machine as well. IT saves tons of space by having it on the right. Also mouse travels less. However, I haven't done this on my Mac yet. Great tip, though.
It's still better on the side so you can easily see what applications are running and any other status alerts that appear in the dock, without moving your mouse or clicking/hovering anything at all.

@marco7centurion Of course you can but that's not as useful since you cannot see what is currently running as easily with it hidden.

@chinchilla2302 Disagree. It's way easier to move to the right or left then to move down.

@phototristan Well, that's preference. I've kept the dock at the bottom since 10.0, and old habits die hard, I suppose.

I wasn't even aware this was possible, and you made a good argument, I'll try it

Yeah, once you get used to it, it's great!

I do run into the problem of having it on the right side of my right screen when using 2 monitors, so that's not the most convenient.
rubbermuck 2 years ago
i just autohide it on the bottom, keeping the desktop completely clean
NixKah 2 years ago
That still takes up room on the bottom when you show it though.
phototristan 2 years ago
but that doesn't affect the size of other stuff, plus the time i show it is when i want to look at it rather then the rest of screen
