If you know about the Timewave? that happens to end on the same date as the Mayan reset on 2012, it's about increasing amounts of novelty actually coming to exist in spacetime. So overnight buildings appearing would be extremely novel, and may be the kind of thing to expect after 2012. As it is, the crop art obviously isn't just being made by people, so yes it's subtle but it is still unexplained.
