@nellyyllen1: You may be correct, brother. However, as with anything else, we adapt, improvise, and overcome obstacles as they arise. In the event of a satellite system breakdown, we simply transition to a compass, protractor, and map. Many blessings, and best of luck! --GM
is the ability to have your team members show up your map availiable on any Garmin Rino model or just the 530hcx? What i mean is if i have a Rino 530 and my friend has a rino 120...will he show up on my map screen and I his? am i making sense?
@AnalyticalSurvival With this rino gps, is it based on cell phone coverage or gmrs/frs coverage? I wanted to get two of these so I can have a home base and the other will be used for outdoor camping. Can I see my other rino user if he or she is in another city of the same state?
GM - Did you look at the other Rino models? Obviously the High Speed/Low Drag 530 is ideal... I'm just wondering if I would be better off getting ONE 530 or get a set (for me and the wife) of the cheaper models? Stay Safe - Zuma
@gammathetasbear: That's a good question. I've installed maps which I purchased onto the unit itself using the SD card slot. If I am not mistaken, I believe these maps can still be used for navigating - regardless of a satellite connection. Hope this helps, and this is certainly an issue that can use more input from others and/or research. Many blessings --GM
@ROBERTTDDLLSS: Revert to your land navigation skills. Electronics does not negate basic navigation skills but rather augments or supports it; use them both in conjunction. Many blessings, and thanks for your question --GM
I love coming to this site and watching these vid's. I've watched several more than once. Very well thought-out ideas and obvious survival intellect at work here. Question: Could you come up with a vid' detailing what to ditch to effectively get off-the-grid when TSHTF? I know a lot already; however, based on what I've seen of your vid's, what I thought and what I learned from your work are two totally different things.
@BeachOp1: Thanks so much for your kind words, brother! I like to view SHTF scenarios in layers -- each with increasing gradations of severity. It's like anything else -- there's a progression or unfolding to any given phenomenon. Regarding the Garmin Rino itself, many feel it will compromise their position. Perhaps. I say remain fluid and flexible until the situation definitively dictates that positional security is absolutely essential. Hope this helps. Many blessings --GM
The RINO 120 was the original "tactical" model and has a voice scramble feature that is compatible with the discontinued Motorola T600 series and excellent T7200 series. The 120 lacks the color screen but batteries tend to last longer on the units with B&W LCD screens. Obviously you have to be conserned with enemy hacking not just your coms, but your location.
Another little known feature is the compatibility software on the Garmins includes a scan feature which is the best in the business.
@charlesrg: Oh yes -- and quite good at that. There is a protective glassy cover over the main screen which--every now and then--flashes in your eye, but that's with any screened item of this type. --GM
@webcaster: Thanks for your comment! I apologize, but I have a back-log of potential videos on the back burner at the moment. I can certainly do a video on stippling -- in fact, it will probably be sooner than later! Many blessings --GM
I would suggest a Russian GPS system (GLONASS - Global Navigation Satellite System) due to the US being able to flip a switch and encode all US gps systems. There might even be units that can switch from one to the other, kind of like sim cards and cell phones. Anyways, just a thought.
I think that there are a lot of possible SHTF senerios, where there may be no functioning govt to track your gps, or situations where the govt has no reason to try and track you. My question is, how long can the worldwide gps aystem stay up and running without being maintained?
Can a GPS be tracked?? Say you have it for survival, and the govt is looking for you, can't they track it? Thats why I dont have one cause I always figured that they could.
Electronics of this sort are, as you've stated, a calculated risk. Bottom line: each individual must determine for themselves the pros and cons of EACH item they carry. I personally enjoy the Garmin not only for its navigational capabilities (while hunting and camping), but also it radio capabilities as well. Good question! --GM
@AnalyticalSurvival No signal is sent from a GPS unit nor is any authentication require to use GPS. Rather, GPS satellites continuously emit a beacon at regular intervals with a simple payload containing info about the satellites position, the current time (relative to the satellite) and an almanac w/info on the other GPS satellites. Your receiver then uses this information to calculate your position relative to the satellite. No one can use GPS to find you but other tech in this radio might.
They could track it if you had it registered in your name. But it would be a process, Garmin would have to give them your info to do it legally. Other wise they can only track you if you 1) use the radio, 2) they recognize YOUR voice, and 3) can triangulate your location, requiring two radar systems set up in the relative area you are in. cells can be tracked, as long as the battery is in it. Bottom line, don't register the gps in your name, but in some fictional character or a dead realtive.
this guy give good info but you can not depend on the technology he say you need. first, home land security monitors GPS units and stores this data. now ask yourself if you are under the scrutiny of a government agency doesn't stand to reason that your equipment GPS units, cell phones also will be under inspection.
every location you visit is logged and if there is a reason to look at you, then they can also look at your electronics.
Thanks for your comment. Please note that EVERY item of survival gear -- including your own -- has drawbacks. Every one. This is why I advocate building in redundancies. For instance, I likewise have the skill to navigate expertly with a compass and map. All with no technology, mind you. And keep in mind, these are merely suggestive options, not mandatory dictates.
Thanks for showing the rino - looks like it would be great tool to add one's tool box and yes its a long way from old compass & pace count we had the military.

What about radio communications? CB, VHF, UHF etc... Don't you have any suggestions about that? =D
Keep up the good work!

@0122358 Yes, all Rino models show the polling of other users on the same radio channel.
